Sunbird alpha testing is here. If you signed up to be a part of Sunbird you should be getting an email.

You need a discord account. I am not a regular user of Discord so I might not get picked but I now have a discord account and will be testing the alpha if allowed.

Sunbird is a iMessages app for Android that makes it so you don't need to run a server on a Mac and can send and receive iMessages on your Android device.

I am pretty excited about this as it would allow Android phone users to take full advantage of the Apple ecosystem at least texting wise on all their Apple devices.

I wanted to try Blue bubbles but having to set up a server on a Mac running 24/7 was not something I wanted to do.

to be fair, you could setup a macos vm on any windows machine and put it on there... blue bubbles is utterly amazing and gets better every couple of weeks

If I get picked I will let everyone know and how it works on my s23 ultra.

yeah would be interesting!

Looks promising. I joined the waitlist.

Waiting for that also.
I like that this will not only be iMessage but eventually other platforms also.
Pretty cool.

Does it go back to the home screen immediately or was there a delay? My card stayed on the screen until I clicked out of it. I wonder why that is.

@Bkdodger

Thanks for the suggestion. However I prefer the detailed pop-ups for when I am using the screen I like the more detail.
Once the blue tick that confirms payment appears it takes maybe a second or two then returns to the home screen. I never have to click out of it.

it's accessible from any home screen by swiping down from the top... not in an app I guess, dunno if androids is

it sits on my desk or my bedside cabinet.... an email comes in, I glance and think nah nothing to that, another one comes in and I can see enough of a preview on the aod to say yikes better attend to that. Same for any other notification.

That's why it's useful to me

right now my Iphone AOD looks like:-
time
date
weather -- news
notification stack showing previews of recent emails and other things

android looks like
time
date
icons cloud, ring, ring, ring, and an icon saying +11

to me the former is way more useful on the AOD

I find the Android more useful.
I much rather like to know if I have notifications and can tap on them to see more detail rather than the detail upfront.
Just the way I find it useful.

What I miss on iOS (Apple removed it) it the ability to just lockscreen only for specific items, separate from Notifications.

Yes on Samsung the notifications pull down from top is available everywhere all the time not just lock or home screen so accessibility is greater

You must be lucky I never seem to get one notification at a time with sufficient time to look and wait for next :)

Soon as you have multiple notifications you have to interact with the phone so glancing at AOD on Iphone is of little or significant help with multiple notifications that exceed screen available space or are stacked

Just a simple double tap on your Samsung AOD gives you all the access you need without having to unlock, which in your scenario is far easier than having to lean over to even face unlock or for glancing only you still see several notifications the same as your IPhone

An additional little thing is scheduling the AOD to switched off overnight, but again double tap wakes it up if needed

Yes the IPhone has a limited set of widgets that can be placed in 3 set boxes but compared to Android widgets on home screen and customization its fairly low key :).

But you can access several widgets on your AOD with a double tap/swipe like music, todays schedule, next alarm, weather, modes and routines, digital wellbeing. You also missed out picture can be added in addition to many different clock, watch faces etc etc available with Goodlock

There is a lot more to Samsung AOD once you dig a little deeper and not just have it set to default icons notifications, by starting with detail etc :)

Very odd.

I just went and grabbed some lunch, paid with Google Pay, I get the blue checkmark, then it went back to my card on the screen. I wonder what is going on?

Are you using GooglePay or SamsungPay?

I originally was going to use SamsungPay when I first set it up, but some apps I use that Starbucks and Chick Fi Le use ApplePay or GooglePay. They don't have SamsungPay in there. Sure you can use SP if you at the register, but through apps, not a lot of them use it.

yep makes sense and definitely better

but you don't have to have them stacked, you can have them listed for example and hey, even 1 notification visible is better than 0 right? ;-)

The way it normally works for me is, iPhone sits there on the desk, lights up with a notification, I glance at it and sometimes I'll pick it up and action sometimes I wont but I still know what's happened... another one comes in, same thing.

On the android a tiny little icon appears and there's space for a few before I get +10 or whatever

focus mode works great on the iphone ;-) and is finely customisable to exactly what apps and even what part of what app... for eg. my personal focus mode allows personal emails but not work emails (from the same app)

Yes the IPhone has a limited set of widgets that can be placed in 3 set boxes but compared to Android widgets on home screen and customization its fairly low key :).

yeah on the home screen it's definitely more limited, not even close... but on AOD, apple arguably has more

yeah on the iphone I tend to have the weather background on the AOD.... kinda useful and pretty ;-) more useful than a standard animation or picture though.

There is a lot more to Samsung AOD once you dig a little deeper and not just have it set to default icons notifications, by starting with detail etc :)

I'm definitely up for believing that it's simply that I haven't played with android enough.... In fact I'd almost be prepared to BET that's the case....

There's also the usual "I want it to work like my other phone does" which of course isn't the best way to find out how well something "new" works. so I'll admit to that one too!

Keep messing I guess!

Question for blue bubbles and other iMessage Android users. Aside from appearing as a blue bubble, are your photos and videos being shared at full resolution or are you only appearing as a blue bubble?

Everything you note is there just accessing them is slightly different and in most cases with more options

It seems your not experimenting enough :)

I especially like the scrolling msg for reward you can set up, or use for something else

Normal AOD
1.jpg

Advanced AOD (2 taps/swipe)

2.jpg

Lock screen with interactive notifications detail etc from AOD (2 taps)

3.jpg

And the above are just simple examples, there are many more options

I use Google Pay. I literally just paid for breakfast and it went straight to home screen post payment. I assumed that was how it's supposed to work. Maybe I have a defective product

oh I'm completely up for believing that yep :) LOL

...and whilst not wanting to take up your time as my very own tech support ;-) because I really will play... can I just ask this though.

Is there any way without messing with 3rd party apps, to have the actual notification preview show on the AOD as it comes in.... not just an icon and without any tapping?

I'm fine with the answer "no" it'll at least stop me trying to look for it

As I was drifting through YT this fine Friday morn, I ran across this.
Looking at it from an ecosystem perspective. Different.

As someone who's in both Apple and Samsung ecosystems. Apple's ecosystem is better overall. But Samsung ecosystem is not far off at all.

Also, with Samsung, you're really blending two (Samsung/Google) ecosystems together. Which can have it's benefits over Apple.

With Apple, a user can really have everything (even down to emails) under one ecosystem.

The S pen. Probably something people who have a S23 ultra don't use all the time.

However, when you need it, it can be a seriously helpful tool. Since no other phone has one it does set the s23 ultra apart and makes this phone invaluable in certain situations.

I had a personal issue with my family where I had to fill out a bunch of paperwork and email it back. It was a PDF form and normally I would have to print everything out, sign and fill out the forms with a pen then scan or photo and send back which is cumbersome, time consuming and wasteful.

Having my s pen I was able to annotate and fill in everything I needed to. Then I just saved the edited copy and sent it right back to the sender. Took a short time. It worked perfectly and saved me since my printer is out of ink.

Some may say the s pen is a gimmick or not that useful and for me it is a life saver and is the cherry on top for the s23 ultra.

No iPhone could have done what I did. I could have used an iPad with an Apple pencil but I don't have or use an Apple pencil. I have immediate family who does so I would have been able to do it but it would have been inconvenient. While with my S23U my s pen is always there when I need it.

Another big reason why I may be buying Samsung Galaxy Ultra series from now on.

Yup, and nothing beats pulling out the Spen and jotting a quick note without even unlocking the phone. It's a highly underrated feature.

yeah everyone I talk to says they never used the spen other than to mess when they first got the phone but you're right, for signing documents it's brilliant.

I'm kinda amazed apple never got the apple pencil (or a slimmer variant thereof) working on the iphone

Currently no, the more advance screen is only 2 taps on the AOD to display

As i said before unless your a person who only receives say 2 notifications an hour seeing these last ones on your Iphone AOD is really of little help IMO you still have to interact with your phone to see all the others, as the important ones maybe hidden
