I am of the opinion that iMessage is an American thing, or should I say the reliance on it is an American thing. This isn't a slur or criticism, it's just what I have been seeing. I live in the UK and get free calls, texts and messages so I don't miss it in any way. Truthfully, when people say they don't answer or don't get answered if they have a green bubble, it's just beyond my comprehension.

"this imessages thing" like its a tiny thing LOL I just don't think you're able to understand that other people have a different experience to yourself... different contacts using different systems. If the majority of someone's contacts use imessage then it isn't so easy to just move to whatsapp!

For example a lot of people with school age children give them ipads without a cell number. iMessage just works for them as a family unit.
The irony of this is simply you fail to understand the scenarios your coming up with are very much as I noted mainly a US thing and simple do not translate worldwide

Even in the US there are likely more than 100m users not on Imessages and are coping

Coming up with a scenario of Ipad usage knowing WhatsApp is not available is just daft, given the extra safety and usage a simple $50 pay as you go phone provides at all times with or without a WiFi only Ipad in tow. Its what i did with my kids more than 20 years back

Of course I understand different user cases but many are self inflicted for convenance because they can afford it, not because its better

Its a path of least resistance which I can understand, but its not cheaper option or typical other than maybe the US

No? they DO translate to other regions even if you wish it wasn't so.

I'm outside the US and I get way more iMessage than anything else and unsurprisingly I suppose, I'm told that's true when I ask my friends. That's how it is I guess. There are going to be circles of contacts who all use iMessage and if I see them I'll think it's everywhere and you don't so you think it's virtually nowhere.

You may have used a simple pay as you go phones with your kids 20 yrs ago well, that was 20 yrs ago and pretty much irrelevant now.

I just completely disagree with you and my daily experience for many years tells me you're wrong. I guess we'll have to just agree to disagree :)

Well in other news, I've played with the s23u long enough, I need to factory reset it and use it properly now. Kinda scared :) first time doing this on an android an no idea what I'll lose and have to resetup.

Anyway, needs to be done to get rid of all the bits I played with to get used to it.

There are two ways to reset your phone. You can back up the device with Samsung or Google. I recommend Samsung.

Then you can just reset it and set it up and use the back up and restore everything. I don't recommend doing this though.

I recommend setting the phone up as new. Then use the restore to JUST restore your contacts, call history and messages. Then install all the apps you use fresh. You will have to sign into all of them again and it is a pain and will take some time.

The reasiI suggest doing it this way is that it prevents any issues and it will run like new. If you do a complete restore it will install all your apps but on a lot of them you still have to sign in again. The problem is there can be issues with the version of the app it restores.

Literally tons of people think there is a problem with their phone and they have some weird bug or app force closing. System UI force closing etc. I ask if they did a full restore and most of the time they had.

Unfortunately restoring your phone on Android is not as smooth a process as it is on iOS. This is big reason why some people prefer iOS and I can't argue with it because iOS can be completely wiped from an iPhone and re-installed if there is a problem using a Mac and then you restore it and the process is automatic and for most settings and apos it is like you are using the previous phone but now with a fresh install. I wish Android could do this.

I will say you can flash and wipe a Pixel and Googles back up and restore is pretty close to iOS but Samsung phones don't have the same capability. You can only reset the phone and then restoring it is a process.

Don't get me wrong you can use the Samsung restore function and it will work but sometimes it causes glitches and if you are going through the trouble of a reset then I am betting you want to avoid hassles down the road.

Curious question for y'all. Why do you "need" iMessage. Don't get me wrong. I like iMessage more than what Android offers, but since switching, I never felt like I absolutely needed it for any reason. I just text people now.
I'm in school and I send a lot of documents through iMessage. It's very convenient and quick. Also, iMessage has end-to-end encryption, which SMS does not have. Lastly (and most importantly), my mom sends me a lot of videos of my dogs. The videos are clear and crisp through iMessage, but incredibly pixelated and unwatchable through SMS.

I have no idea why you are simply in denial of the global penetration and usage of Imessages

Even in the US its ranked 3rd behind Facebook and Instagram and just in front of WhatsApp by 4% according to Statista

Globally, IMessage does not even come up in most stats on messenger platforms, where WhatsApp dominance is clear.

For general anecdotal evidence you only have to look at threads here on MR to find the same response on IMessage only has a strong following in US, mainly

I agree to disagree especially if you think more parents globally are buying iPads to keep in touch for safety with their children instead of buying cheap android phones or hand-me-downs with pay as you go sims

Yes your correct "MMS" why anyone would send video content via that method today is daft.

Yes only IMessage's are encrypted from your IPhone not SMS or MMS sent from your IPhone, that's why group chats fail to a degree when not all are Iphone users

I think it not quite true :)

Apple iCloud synch/backup that you need to pay for storage will almost be a complete clone but Mac or PC backup of an Iphone is not:

Backups from your computer

A computer backup of your device, which is not the same as a sync, includes almost all of your device's data and settings. A backup from a computer doesn't include:
  • Content from the iTunes and App Stores, or PDFs downloaded directly to Apple Books
  • Content synced from Finder or iTunes, such as imported MP3s or CDs, videos, books, and photos
  • Data already stored in iCloud, such as iCloud Photos, iMessages, and text (SMS) and multimedia (MMS) messages
  • Face ID or Touch ID settings
  • Apple Pay information and settings
  • Apple Mail data
  • Activity, Health and Keychain data (to back up this content, you'll need to use Encrypted Backup in iTunes).

Samsung smart switch will also backup to PC/Mac and even USB/external storage and like Apple its not a complete clone, but pretty close

I think the thing most notice with Samsung's backup although it knows all your apps, you still have to automatically re download them from Playstore ie the APK's are not in the backup, so you do get the latest fresh ones.

Both systems I found have glitches which most time revolve around banking apps and similar items, which is understandable for security reasons :)

For these reason I find it better to unregister some banking apps etc and re-register afterwards

Anyone here get the Samsung updated account usage terms today? There is not an option to reject all. This appears rather invasive, only recourse is to delete your Samsung account. Not sure of what or how significant that is. Not cool Sammie!

Apple is exactly the same. Agree to assimilate. I don't care about any of that anymore. Just hit accept and move on with my life.

In my little pocket of existence in the US, as the other parents and our kids and I coordinate sharing of prom pictures and pictures from various other school related events, it’s showing that about 98% of us are on iPhone and so far the parents and teens are automatically sharing access to shared albums in iCloud Photos. So it’s not just iMessages tethering some of us Americans to each other and Apple.

We have a couple of Android-only users we offered to make accommodation for using Google photos and they didn’t respond so far. One is a teen getting photos off of social media and one is an adult whose son is probably handling photo distribution for his parents from his iPhone.

For me, it’s just settled to stay on both, so I’m no longer thinking about iOS vs Android and am now obsessed with vacuum cleaners. 😆

I’ve had fun watching videos and reading reviews…for vacuum cleaners. 🤣 I picked a Henry from the UK.

Looks like AT&T has got their esim switching process working well. Switched easily from my 14PM to S23U in a matter of a few minutes this morning.

Going to try to get Blue Bubbles working today. I know what some of you non US people are saying and I get it but probably 90% of the people I message with on a daily basis, and there are a lot of them, are on iMessage.

Is that different to any other OEM ?
I've had the account for more than three years, so these terms are new. It's similar to Apple / Google but you knew what you were getting before you bought into it. Taking a minute to learn more, I just don't like the take it or leave attitude.

Please don't tell me there are forums for vacuum cleaners that you also actively participate in 😁

Unfortunately they are all the same and to some degree we only have ourselves + the legal system to blame where companies have to protect themselves from what would be an almost endless barrage of legal actions otherwise :)

There are, and it's absolutely mad. No, I don't participate because I'm the equivalent of someone using a cheap prepaid phone that gets no software updates, ever. I mean, among my uprights I use a $150 Hoover and I used to own a $80 Bissell. Horrors! I'd be laughed right off the discussions.

Dyson might be okay, but these guys (oddly it's all men, no women that I could detect) don't play...we are talking Riccar, Royal, Sebo. My $800 Miele (that became a dirt-leaking piece of garbage within 3 years) just barely makes the cut. That vac is now my garage vac. Since then I vowed never to go above $450 on a vac again.

Mostly, there seem to be people on YouTube following certain channels just to watch vacuums being demonstrated. The most popular ones pit various models against each other.

The vacs have to plow through mountains of debris consisting of cornflakes, flour, cat litter and pet hair. So basically that's everything that's on the floors of my house except they grind it into carpets, which I absolutely do not permit to happen in my house!

Its basically like monster truck rallies but with vacuum cleaners! 😬

If there are people out there talking about using vacuums to actually clean a house like I do, I didn't find very many of them.

The lack of women was puzzling. I saw a lot of men talking about vacuums their wives have. But mostly I saw men talking about their own vacuums. (Inexplicably my Gboard auto fill just tried to fill a different v word in that last sentence!). o_O

Some women do have reviews on YT channels, but the one I saw just sat there next to her vacuum and talked about it. She was very informative, but I have to admit, I fell in love with the Henry after watching it plow through a gigantic pile of debris during one of the competitions!

Gives me the image in my head of the geeks who assemble homemade robots to battle each other.

Give some men any reason to extend their penis into a battle of why what they have is better and you will be amazed at what they come up with to brag about.

My vacuum hose has an extender a full 12" and can suck a golf ball through a rubber hose. 😂 Lol

I see it all the time. Cars, phones, computers, tablets, homes, apartments, sun glasses, etc.

Maybe they just like things really clean and like to bring something out of the closet every once in a while, if you know what I mean.

No disrespect to LGBTQ+ community. But I have found that some men who don't want to deal with who they really are tend to be the most fake macho out there.

Anyway, I digress. Fun story. Gave me a laugh.

I have a cheap dirt devil I think it cost $50 and a industrial vacuum I got off Amazon cheap. No cyclone, no bags, no filters. You just empty the bag when you are done and try not to breathe in. Lol

My goodness. I thought I was husband of the year for getting my wife a couple of roombas for her birthday and chunking our cheap Hoover vacuum. Don't worry I'm not stupid I got her other things 😂 I didn't realize people were that serious about suction!

No slapping needed. Lol

I personally think it is fun to switch between iOS and Android. Sometimes I get a little miffed when I try to go back by swiping and I can't but both OS have their strengths and weaknesses.

Just enjoy them both whenever you decide to use them since you have both. You will get NO judgement from me. I am happy on all platforms. Lol
