I think I can honestly say that the s23 ultra is the best Android phone yet made.
The Pixel 7 Pro takes a completely different approach than the s23 ultra and although it doesn't have all of the cutting edge hardware deserves an equal place when you consider the cost difference. Both phones are extremely closely matched and both I would argue are better than the iPhone 14 Pro/Pro Max.
I still give the edge to Samsung though as even though it cost more you certainly get what you pay for. I think the hardware in the s23u is simply the best. The tech packed into the s23 ultra had to cost Samsung more than the previous generation to manufacturer and that is why I think the trade in value wasn't as good as in the past. I forgive Samsung because they had to make up for the increased cost of production and didn't raise the price.
As I stated in a previous post literally everything in the s23 ultra is cutting edge. The ddr5x ram, the ufs 4.0, the cameras, the screen, the speakers, the processor, all of them have been seriously upgraded over last year. Just because Samsung didn't do a major redesign most of the reviews missed the most important aspect of the upgrades. Personally I really appreciate that Samsung focused on improvements internally and the components of the phone rather than just slapping a new design and calling it a day.
Also One UI essentially has Stage Manager with Dex that works better and ram management that allows us to use some of that fast UFS storage for extra ram when needed. No other mobile phone can do this that I know of and this feature of OneUI 5 is often missed. This is the first time I really feel like I could use the s23u as an all in one device if I needed. I could run it on a monitor and use it like a Chromebook, I could use it as a tablet with the large rectangular display and of course I can use it as a phone. It has a great camera set up for content creation with a fast GPU to edit the video.
Gaming is also excellent.
I love the squared design with the thicker edges. I like aluminum armor over stainless steel because it is lighter while still being strong and has better scratch resistance than just regular aluminum.
The battery life is finally excellent for a heavy user like me.
Updates will continue for 4 years of OS updates and 5 years of security updates.
Call screening is finally on a non Pixel phone. Not even Apple offers this.
Then there is the spen which I can use as a remote shutter to take photos away from the phone to capture nice family shots.
One UI is smooth and fast. I can customize everything I want in this phone from using a jpeg as my lock screen to using a jpeg on my always on display. Colors are themed to match my wallpaper. No other phone can do this.
So with all that said I think Samsung deserves some credit for the changes they have made. There is still more bloat than I prefer but with 512gb storage I am not too worried.
iPhone has some catching up to do. And as a happy Apple Mac and iPad user I have to give up some functionality. As a person whose family uses iPhones I have to give up some connectivity. I think those compromises are worth it for now because the s23 ultra is so good and there are work arounds for any stumbling blocks. If I was primarily a Windows user with a Samsung tablet and earbuds I would have found the perfect combination. Luckily I have a Windows PC and Samsung buds and tablet so I can take full advantage of the Samsung ecosystem.
I won't leave my Mac probably ever but if cost was my primary concern I have excellent alternatives that cost on average half or way less than half of the Apple products without any degradation in quality or usefulness. Maybe less battery life on my Windows laptop but it is not so much that I couldn't get by. I am just waiting for Intel to finally get on 7nm or even 4nm which seems to be taking Forever and then I think the hardware will be better matched. For now Apple has a better OS, better hardware in general and better speed and efficiency across devices with better interconnectivity but that gap keeps getting smaller.
