And worse flickery screen. Weird how some on here mysteriously forget that!!!
Companies like Samsung just don’t care that there is a certain percentage of their users impacted by poor quality flickery OLED screens. Well if they don’t care about all their potential users then that’s easy to resolve by people not giving them their money. Mind you that’s not easy as a lot of manufacturers don’t seem to care about this but Samsung seem to be a worse offender than even companies like Apple.
Oh I haven't forgotten. I'm currently out on over $1000 on a flickery mess of a phone I returned that is now said to be stolen. Hopefully that situation will be resolved in my favor.
I'm one of the poster children here for pwm sensitivity. I have a new S23 Ultra. I can feel the flicker. I do also perceive that it's slightly aesthetically inferior to my S22 Ultra display and less comfortable. And I have said so, ad nauseam. However, I CAN use it and I do now have the battery life I wanted and needed.
I do still use my S22 Ultra, especially for reading in bed at night. It's optimal for that purpose due to good eye comfort. And because the battery life is not great, I prefer it for this use because I don't want to have to rely on it when I'm out and about.
So, having said all that, I'm working to make the point that I reluctantly understand why they made the tradeoff they did, going with this new display. This phone with its excellent battery life is going to please the vast majority of their users in a way that the same model with last year's excellent display probably wouldn't have, except for us few pwm sensitive individuals.
I do hate this fact. I hate knowing many others will not be able to use this fantastic phone because the display is essentially as irritating and debilitating as a strobe light is to non pwm sensitive people.
I was sad and disappointed and felt tremendously left behind when I found I couldn't use my previous S23 Ultra. Okay, to be honest, I was absolutely gutted. I'm an empathetic person, so I'm still gutted for anyone who can't use it this year.
But one thing I've noticed about Samsung, when they do introduce a significantly new display, they don't always get it right at first. (My S8+ display was a psychedelic iridescent pink mess). But they do refine their work dramatically and subsequent displays had far fewer quality issues. And so I believe they do seem aware of their shortcomings. I don't know if they have people who monitor social media posts or what, but they do improve their pain points year to year.
So I have hope the S24 series displays will be better in respects that enable more pwm sensitive customers to use them.
Meanwhile, if this new S23 Ultra hadn't worked out for me, I would have returned to the thread dedicated to that subject and talked about it there. I wouldn't have kept making critical comments here to ruin the fun of people who are able to use this phone.
I'm well aware I already said plenty on the subject. Everyone here was very patient, compassionate and understanding when I expressed my dismay with the display on my previous phone and even on the current phone I am keeping. And for that, I am very thankful.
The participants on this thread ARE aware and they DO care. But it doesn't affect them so they're going to talk other things.
