Udate on my S22 Ultra trade in drama
I asked for it to be sent back to me. I got it today and no cracked display or damage anywhere!
Except they didn't send back the S-Pen! Bastards!
I'm glad they sent it back to you. But jeez they stole the flipping S Pen?!!! Wth is going on over there. I don't think that's FedEx doing this.

I wish I had just gone ahead and handled this myself but my husband is insisting to handle his and my phone shenanigans together. I'm frustrated because he's so zen about it all and I want to go nuclear on someone's behind. I don't know if that's because he's got a game plan or because he's just checked out these days due to a project at work. I have been busy and preoccupied, myself, so I don't know if any tech writers have picked up on this at all.

My mom has told me half the people she normally dines with are missing and have been since last week.

One dude she knows is in the hospital with a fever. Last week the receptionist told me there's an active case of Covid so I had to wear a mask. But no emails went out to families like in times past about any active illness outbreaks. When I signed in today they didn't mention anything to me or caution me about anything.

Even I noticed one of the women I know by sight has been missing for weeks. She looked healthy last time I saw her and she was active, so I don't think she fell off her perch in the usual sudden fashion of assisted living residents. I don't know if it's okay to ask where she is or if anyone would even know because I don't recognize the staff, either. As mom complained to me last time I saw her, a lot of the staff she knew are missing, too.

No wonder my mom's a bit squirrelly. Did the Rapture happen and we missed it with our wicked, wicked ways? Were there mass alien abductions? Enquiring minds want to know. (I wonder how many people remember those National Enquirer ads).

Meanwhile, despite being nauseous earlier in the week, I seem to have gained a few pounds from sitting like a lump. I swear, I did NOT eat the missing people!

Nor am I in Coppell Texas eating missing Samsung phones and phone accessories! Nope, James, I do not have your S Pen. 😬

I've officially been with this phone for two weeks! I can no longer return it! Very happy with this phone, and I am learning something new about it every day!
What did you do with your iphone? I'm on the Ultra as well and it's sooo sick.

I'm learning, too. Slowly. I'm still very slowly setting it up. I'm setting up because years of just Smart Switching everything over in a lazy and sloppy way means a suboptimal setup. My Pixel 6 Pro setup is a bit better.

My husband is back from his business trip. We will discuss what to do about this whole stolen/broken trade in mess. I will likely report the phone as stolen.

I still need to dive into Bixby routines. I prefer Google assistant for everything but if Bixby has a could good tricks, that could be fun!

Someone at work gave me their extra S-pen that goes to the s22 ultra. It's blue though. If you're want it you can have it. It works, I tried it on my s22 ultra. LMK

So I was reading up on the loddr5 and ufs 4.0 that most reviewers just kind of skip over but these are huge improvements. Guess who makes them? If you guessed Samsung you would be right.

Ufs 4.0 is twice the read speeds and over double the write speeds with a close to 50% less power draw.

Lpddr5x is also about 30% faster than lpddr5 at the same power draw.

Couple that with a more efficient processor that is also faster and a more efficient yet brighter screen and you can see why these phones are so fast and have better battery life.

These are pretty big improvements across the board with a 30% faster cpu and if I remember correctly 60% faster gpu.

No wonder the s23 ultra is so much better than last year. So this is why I never listen to people telling me that there is no difference between the s22 and s23 ultra. They really don't know what they are talking about.

Oh and I forgot better speakers and faster charging, better modem, Bluetooth and wifi 6e.

And worse flickery screen. Weird how some on here mysteriously forget that!!!

Companies like Samsung just don’t care that there is a certain percentage of their users impacted by poor quality flickery OLED screens. Well if they don’t care about all their potential users then that’s easy to resolve by people not giving them their money. Mind you that’s not easy as a lot of manufacturers don’t seem to care about this but Samsung seem to be a worse offender than even companies like Apple.

here's a fun one.. if you own the s23ultra turn on the always on display and make sure you have a black background.. enter a semi dark room, it doesn't have to be pitch black.. and slowly wave the phone from side to side ..

it's almost as if you can see the refresh rate and the screen blinks ..

The screen isn't poor quality, it's just that some people are sensitive to PWM. It's a trade-off between accuracy at low brightness and flicker,

notebookcheck:
Even the OLED panel of the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is not spared from flickering. In our measurements, we observed a constant frequency of 120 Hz at minimum brightness. This may sound low at first, but can be classified as relatively easy on the eyes due to the flat period curve. If the brightness is increased, the frequency doubles, but remains at a constant level. Slight fluctuations only occur between 240 and 250 Hz during touch inputs. The panel's behavior corresponds to that of one with permanent DC dimming, even if Samsung does not specify this.

eg iphone 14 flickers with 60Hz only😂

I'd like to say this s23 ultra is such a great device. Still making customizations to fit what I like but it's so fast and snappy. My s22 ultra felt like that too and the iphone just was slow on all of it. Even opening apps. Battery life has improved a lot. I'll have to report later once I use it more than a day but I'm using both Sims right now to keep Google Fi happy.

Oh I haven't forgotten. I'm currently out on over $1000 on a flickery mess of a phone I returned that is now said to be stolen. Hopefully that situation will be resolved in my favor.

I'm one of the poster children here for pwm sensitivity. I have a new S23 Ultra. I can feel the flicker. I do also perceive that it's slightly aesthetically inferior to my S22 Ultra display and less comfortable. And I have said so, ad nauseam. However, I CAN use it and I do now have the battery life I wanted and needed.

I do still use my S22 Ultra, especially for reading in bed at night. It's optimal for that purpose due to good eye comfort. And because the battery life is not great, I prefer it for this use because I don't want to have to rely on it when I'm out and about.

So, having said all that, I'm working to make the point that I reluctantly understand why they made the tradeoff they did, going with this new display. This phone with its excellent battery life is going to please the vast majority of their users in a way that the same model with last year's excellent display probably wouldn't have, except for us few pwm sensitive individuals.

I do hate this fact. I hate knowing many others will not be able to use this fantastic phone because the display is essentially as irritating and debilitating as a strobe light is to non pwm sensitive people.

I was sad and disappointed and felt tremendously left behind when I found I couldn't use my previous S23 Ultra. Okay, to be honest, I was absolutely gutted. I'm an empathetic person, so I'm still gutted for anyone who can't use it this year.

But one thing I've noticed about Samsung, when they do introduce a significantly new display, they don't always get it right at first. (My S8+ display was a psychedelic iridescent pink mess). But they do refine their work dramatically and subsequent displays had far fewer quality issues. And so I believe they do seem aware of their shortcomings. I don't know if they have people who monitor social media posts or what, but they do improve their pain points year to year.

So I have hope the S24 series displays will be better in respects that enable more pwm sensitive customers to use them.

Meanwhile, if this new S23 Ultra hadn't worked out for me, I would have returned to the thread dedicated to that subject and talked about it there. I wouldn't have kept making critical comments here to ruin the fun of people who are able to use this phone.
I'm well aware I already said plenty on the subject. Everyone here was very patient, compassionate and understanding when I expressed my dismay with the display on my previous phone and even on the current phone I am keeping. And for that, I am very thankful.

The participants on this thread ARE aware and they DO care. But it doesn't affect them so they're going to talk other things.

That's because most of these reviewers are only parroting the brochure that they just read about the product. Many of them are not even a techie as almost none of them even talked about the much improved SD8gen2. They just saw the shell, "oh it looks the same," and ran with that.

Stupid question. How do I switch my "Phone" screen and settings screen to light mode? I have my dark mode custom schedules set and the phone is in "light theme". No matter what I try those two screens are always dark. Thanks!

Edit: nevermind, I forgot that I am using a custom theme from the Galaxy store. That probably is the reason.

I am sorry that you are obviously not happy with the display. I understand that if you are affected by PWM it must be a really frustrating issue. If you have been on this forum for a while you should know Apple seems to be a worse offender in this area than Samsung. Almost all new MacBook screens irrespective of tech seem to bother a certain subset of people. Even on a display that is PWM free a lot of people still complain about Apple displays. The M2 MBA is one prime example.

I don't think it has anything to do with a specific company or a company not caring but the limitations of display technology itself. In regards to the screen on the s23 ultra they probably had certain limits and choices in order to decrease the power draw.

Honestly if Samsung could make a display that use less energy and has no PWM or temperal dithering I am sure they would. They want to sell as much as possible and if you know there is a certain amount of people who can't tolerate your screens I am sure that would bother you no matter how small.

I don't know why people attach emotional traits to companies. They don't care, they care, they fight for x groups, they care about the environment and so on. The only thing Samsung, Apple, Dell, Asus, insert company name here is profit. Whatever they can do to increase profit is there only motivation I can assure you.

All that being said I didn't mention screen flicker because I wasn't talking about what I thought were flaws and it is an issue that not everyone can even see, let alone are bothered by. I care about it because I am pretty sure whether it affects me or not it isn't good for my health and I hate for anyone to suffer or get negative health outcomes using any tech-period.

I could talk about sar ratings and wifi band radiation and how it is a lot more dangerous than people understand, I could talk about cell band radiation and how dangerous that is. I could talk about the operating system itself impacting the mental health of users in a negative way. I could talk about how OS have a hypnotic affect on people to keep them using the OS and I could talk about social media but that is really not the focus of this thread.

I agree.

The thing I don't like about YouTube and social media in general is it promotes a groupthink mentality. In it, image is more important than substance. Get a response from people regardless if what they are saying is true or any deep thoughts were given.

I mean if it had some neon LEDs on the back and a different shape yet didn't change anything else they would be going on and on about the new bold design and what an upgrade it is. Lol

Of course I tend to get on people's nerves when I talk about any issue because I tend to research things to a point where someone will ask a question and I will give them a long answer and all they wanted was a surface level agreement of what they said.

I must admit, I am loving this phone, if I have got a flickering screen, I can't see it. For the last week or so I have been looking at the screen and messing around with the settings none stop without any ill affects, I do suffer from migraine, bad sight and generally in poor health, so, I would have picked up on something if it wasn't right, hell, if my missus uses a different detergent to clean in the bathroom I can hardly breath.

I just think that this is a fabulous device, I bought it as a stop gap until the fold 5 came out but, tbh, I can't see reselling this phone for a long, long time, it's so much fun.
