I just read on MSN news that a 128GB and 256GB version of the phone in all current colors will be available though Samsung beginning tomorrow for preorder and then on sale on May 18th.

Just checked the website. That is some pretty interesting news! Rather cool too actually.

It's what got me to pre-order. It's only a $50 bump from the 64gb version. That's not a lot more.

Love that Samsung keeps the prices competitive without skimping on features. Conversely, the X felt genuinely overpriced. I couldn't shake the $1000+ shadow when I had it.

The only shame is Samsung this time gave the Plus model a lot more. Wish they kept the no-compromise method of past years between the two models.

Yeah it is nice to have the memory all tied together.
I like my Samsung phone but love the Mac Computer.
Although I have a Lenovo which is cheaper priced with the Same memory and it makes me wonder if I should just stick with that or go back and join Apple.
Looking at an $1100 computer for the internet....

After doing further research into the two camera (S9+ and Pixel 2), it looks like the one consistent weakness of the S9+ camera is that highlights get blown out.

Is this a serious issue with the camera in common use?

I have a note 8 and been considering getting a s9. I have taken up running again and the phone is just too big. Sucks you have to give up the second camera if you go smaller.

Just get a watch too :)
I have a gear S3 cellular. It is ok but when I run I need the full phone in order to stay in touch. I wish there was a way to have multiple phones with the same service. I would love to have a iPhone SE just as a workout device. However I am not ok with popping out the Sim card twice daily in perpetuity.

:)

I thought all good service providers allowed a dual sim number use by activating a code so only one device can be used at a time ?

My friend has this between his phone and tablet I thought this was old tech :D

TMobile doesn't have anything like that as far as I know. It would be awesome if they did.

Probably for the best because I have so little will power I would probably own all the flagship phones simultaneously, instead of one at a time

Sounds like weight lifting (those phones) instead of running maybe the answer :)

Do you guys think that an S9+ would last me around 2 years if I got it in August or September? Or should I just wait until the Note 9 or Pixel 3?

I think it absolutely should last you. The S9+ is about as future-proof as you can get, with one exception: software updates. They come late, and they certainly don't last as long as the Pixels do, which gets something like two years of major software updates, and three years of monthly security patches.

Unlocked Samsung devices and some of the carrier ones (namely T-mobile) have a steady monthly update of security patches, but not as often or as early in the month as Pixels get them. And for major software updates, they come months later, and you will get one, but maybe not two major updates. (Is the S7 models getting Android O?)

If that all sounds okay with you, the S9+ should last. It's pretty future-proof in nearly every other category.

I see advantages to the Pixel and the Galaxy that I can't shake.

Galaxy pros:

Better display
Better build quality
Better speakers (important to me)
Expandable storage
Still has headphone jack

Galaxy cons:

Will be loaded with bloat (Verizon)
Bixby
Samsung skin
Slow updates

Pixel pros:

Stock Android (how Google intends it to be ran)
No bloatware
Updates
Really good camera

Pixels cons:

Bad hardware design
No wireless charging
Display is not as good

It's honestly a really hard decision

Of course it would, much like the S7 Edge has and is currently getting Oreo.

I heard that Project Treble is going to make it to where the S9+ gets P and Q (really all I need honestly because I'll upgrade in 18-24 months)

but who knows what Verizon (my carrier) will do

If you plan to wait until August or Sept, can’t hurt to wait to see what the Note brings at least since it’s been unveiled in August in past years I believe. The Pixel 2 line was unveiled Oct 4 last year. Might want to wait until early Oct again if you can make it that long.

Also, chances are you’ll be able to grab a Galaxy S9+ quite a bit cheaper by then.

Sounds like you should wait for the Pixel 3. That model could eliminate the cons in your Pixel list. I sure hope it does.

Another con I'd add to the Pixel that may or may not be important to you: no headphone jack. I use bluetooth earphones, but there are times I miss having the jack on my Pixel 2. It can be frustrating.

In reference to three of your reference points on Samsung cons, I will respond with my experiences switching to Note 8 from iPhone. I had many of the same trepidations.

Bixby: not that good but not that terrible either. I ignore Bixby mostly at this point but have found it convenient in adjusting various phone settings at times.

Samsung skin/carrier bloat - I was pleasantly surpised with Samsung Experience. I love Samsung Pay and Samsung browser is the best, most stable browser I’ve ever used. The mail application works fine. I choose to use Google keyboard, gmail app, WhatsApp and Textra for messaging rather than native apps. I moved the native apps I don’t use to Samsung drawer and never ever even think about them. Same goes for ATT apps (none of which I use). But they’re out of the way and I never have to see or interact with them. My favorite thing about Android is that i get to choose which will be my default apps.

As for updates, I didn’t receive Oreo until March but it has really been anti-climactic and only maybe speeded up my already very zippy device to run a tad faster. I have been underwhelmed with Oreo for my purposes. I do get security updates regularly and I like Samsung’s Knox security. I guess I will be disappointed if I don’t get a second major update next year as I have anticipated I would but maybe it’s not a big issue for me as I will definitely trade for a new phone at end of year 2 as I always do, if not before. I anticipate switching to Note 9, Pixel 3XL, or staying with Note 8 for another year depending on what features are offered on the new phones. I don’t anticipate returning to Apple at this point as this has been my favorite phone thus far.

All this to say that many of the issues that were holding me back from switching (until iPhone X’s design and pricing pushed me over the edge) have not been issues at all. I miss iMessage very little (after thinking leaving it behind would be a nightmare), I am finding no lag with my 8-month+ device (while my new iPad Pro stutters and freezes), and many anticipated problems in theory have not arisen for me in reality. My one concern is not having a local Samsung store to run to if/when I have a hardware issue. It hasn’t been an issue thus far but it could be.

I'm really disappointed in that I've been getting the dropped calls issue that appears to affect some s9+, Every time I call somebody, the call goes silent for a decent period or cuts off.

What I've read indicates a software issue but it means waiting on Samsung to fix the problem.

You should be getting a second major upgrade and security updates for a year or sometimes more after that. For after all, S7 devices are getting Oreo: https://www.sammobile.com/samsung-galaxy-android-8-o-update

In the United States, the carrier versions of the Galaxy S8 received Oreo before the U.S. locked version.

Get the S9+.

I have been really happy with my Note 8 and all the features it offers. Only issue I have is I miss the apple watch and the iPhone just off simplicity.
I do see myself switching back to iPhone as a 55% probability. That other 45% I may stick with Samsung.
One of the biggest deciding factors for me is the fact that I need a new computer and although pricey I'd think I would want to try a Mac.
