I really don’t get that, I really don’t think Apple expects the vision pro to replace phones anytime soon with it’s 2 hour battery life and big headset. That is probably far far into the future when technology is way better and until then phone will exist and since the folding market is growing fast and already worth quite a bit I am sure Apple wants a piece of that.
I dunno I don’t think they see it as the future. They see it as an add on to other flagships out there. Sales don’t really suggest foldable are cracking Into the slab sells not in Europe at least. They are certainly becoming thinner and lighter and getting better in most areas aside from cameras. Which will be hard due to space issues. That said Chinese foldables are putting more and better hardware each year so maybe they can figure it out

Samsung alone is expecting to sell 15 million foldables in 2023 compared to 10 million last year so it is growing fast, but it is sales in China by chinese brands that are growing the most YoY. I think we will see more and more growth as more options comes and they improve.

This is the thing foldables globally sold 14.2 million units in 2022 reportedly . That’s very low giving the amount of companies who are now selling them. Granted Samsung sold 10-11 so they dominated. This is also flip sales as well so who knows how many Z fold they sold. Overall I wouldn’t say it’s moving the Landscape from normal slab phones. I certainly wouldn’t say foldables aren’t a threat to main slab phones but I wouldn’t class it as the future either.

The Fold 5 has more real estate for the inner display no matter which orientation you hold it. Plus the it has minimal bezels.

As nice of a size as the cover on the Pixel display is (and it looks very one hand friendly), the inner display takes priority in my judgement for foldables.

I hope Samsung doesn't decrease the size of the inner display in order to implement a more useable cover display.

Maybe Samsung can start releasing 2 versions of the Fold to satisfy those who want a Fatter one whilst keeping us who have grown to love the Slim body happy and rather work on eliminating the crease instead.

I wouldn't be surprised if they start doing that. But the cost of the device has to come down for that to be successful.

Umm.. doubt Samsung would do something like that, more of a regular Z Fold and a plus size version. Similar how Google does it with Pixel 7 and 7 Pro, Apple with iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max.. while Samsung has 3 version of their S series.

But then again, if someone prefers a smaller foldable... they could go for the Z Flip.

Aren't they both the same size inner screen? 7.6

Yea, after watching a video that had them both side by side. I'm wrong about any orientation.

Yeah I kind of think the headset is pointless. I had bought a VR for the family 2 years ago thinking it was going to be something we do on family game night. But it ended up collecting dust. And for the people that do adopt it, way to just make our public even more detached from reality.

I’ve heard this from a few people. I’d be interested in hearing what you think of the software that’s out there for 3rd party devices.

Yes I agree, but the market is growing fast and the grwoth doesn't seem to be slowing down and rather increasing. Would be sad if we had the useless slabphones as the only real option for a long time to come. I hope Apple can get in the segment because that for sure would boost it up.

Does anyone know if you can access Instagram on the outside screen of the Flip 5? Would be kind of cool to just quickly flip through the feed updates without opening the whole phone every time but knowing Meta, they blocked it

Give me useless slab phones any day of the week. Fingerprint scanner aside the S23U is by far the best phone I've ever owned. My Fold 4 is a nice gadget but I just found myself never using the main screen. Whilst out & about it's unfeasible to be opening & closing it all the time and when home I just used one of my three tablets.

I can see the Z Fold being great for businessmen who frequently travel on trains & planes and stay in hotels with work but for the regular dude & dudess there's just no need for them IME.

Well I want to use my phone for more than calls, texts and music sometimes. Sometimes you are stuck somewhere and didn’t bring a bag with your tablet and staring at a wall gets old fast. Would be nice to be able to read my ebooks between meetings at the office without bringing my ipad mini in a bag and so on. Loads of instances where I have time to waste and haven’t brought tablets with me.

So I’m at the point of no return with the Z Flip5. Cancel button has disappeared on my pre-order.

Question for the veterans here. What protection would one need? I’m planning on getting a slim case and wondering if I need a screen protector for the cover screen. No protection for the Watch6.

I normally get screen protectors and cases for all phones but nothing for smart watches use them naked.

Any advice would be appreciated.

PS. I have bought the Samsung Care+ for two years as well.

I use a regular phone for all that. Heck I once used an iPhone 4 as my main internet device for a whole year when my laptop gave up the ghost and I couldn't afford another. I'm on and off my S23U all day long doing things. I don't need a foldable device during the day though and at night I have my tablets. I can't see why we all suddenly need foldables.

Yeah I think that is an awful experience, the fold screen size is fine when out and about when it comes to web browsing, reading and such.

Biggest hurdle for reading ebooks on my 14 Pro Max is there’s not enough width to actually fit enough words per line to read at my normal speed, eyes are just dashing back and forth.

Foldable personal accessories etc have been the requirement generally for over 60 years,

The fashion industry made that change for us from folding wallets and compact mirrors etc etc

What was missing for phones was the technology to replace slab formats that have almost grown too much now

So no sudden change just technology catching up with requirements for larger screen trends :)

Additionally as others have noted other convivences come with a fold, such as reading, people with visual impairments, single device etc

I totally get the single gadget scenario and business people etc. For the majority I think that slab phones are still the way forward until the fragility/longevity issue of foldables can be properly addressed. I spent my time with the Fold 4 fearful of issues beyond the 1 year mark and bailed after 10 months of ownership. I dare say that I'll return to the segment in the next 2-5 years but as of now the S23U is the right phone for me.

Yes, you can run any app with Samsung's Good Lock App. This is an app that every Samsung user should download. It's for anyone who wants to have access to functionality and customization beyond what the average user demands.
