Purely joking, dude. I just thought the comment that Apple paid DXO to delay their Note review was funny.
[doublepost=1507066014][/doublepost]

I try to figure out which takes better pics and it varies pic to pic. I think...THINK overall the iPhone's low light shots might be a hair better but...good luck trying to make the argument. It's a nice problem to have at the moment.

From what I've seen, iPhone 8 photos look amazing. And a lot of that has to do with Apple increasing saturation in their photos. I think since Samsung and, to a lesser extent the Google Pixel, has shown how images can "pop" more and look better with more saturation, Apple has followed suit. And thankfully because I've always argued that iPhone photos have this dull and muted look to them.

I was more making sure I understood it correctly.

Better telephoto shooter on the X—f2.4 vs f2.8 and OIS. Front better on X as well due to all the extra sensors.

How much will that help normal people?

Makes a pretty big difference in low light performance for that lens. Use 2X zoom in lower light on the 7 Plus and it could go downhill fast. And video using that lens not having OIS was almost always less than stellar. I think it will make a significant difference.

I don’t put a ton of weight on DXO’s evaluation as historically it seems to be hit and miss but FWIW, the iPhone 8+, without these features, matched up against a Note8 that does have them. No guarantee it will push the X ahead of the Note8 but it certainly can’t hurt.

Controverial statement: the telephoto lens is useless to most people.

I’ll disagree. All the time I see people ‘zoom in’ when taking a photo using pinch-to-zoom. I’d wager very few of them actually understand that they’re just cropping the photo. In these cases, even if they aren’t aware of it, optical zoom will improve the quality of that shot.

I’m an admitted tech geek but when it comes to photos, I’m definitely a regular guy with little appreciable skiil taking pics and video. I find the 2X zoom far more valuable than any ‘portrait’ mode, especially when trying to grab a snap from the sidelines of any of my kids playing sports (itself a pretty common subject for photos). As the quality of the 7 Plus’ telephoto lens is inconsistent at best, I welcome improvements in that shooter. And while most people are likely oblivious to the benefit, I’d say it’s far from useless.

I've been on Android since the Nexus-One days. I was a proud owner of the N1 when it was new, and stood in line at the T-Mobile store the day the Nexus-S first came out ( second Nexus phone ). I have owned pretty much every Nexus phone, and also a lot of Samsung Galaxy phones over the years too. The S line I had the S2, S4, and S8+, and the Note's I had the Note II, and Note 5. Out of all those phones, for whatever year it was the Nexus of that year compared to the Galaxy or Note of the same year, was always smoother, less laggy, and less hiccups.

The S4 was a **** phone, and the Nexus 5 compared to it, was night and day smoother.

I bought the new T-Mobile Galaxy S8+ this Spring, and returned it a week later, it did indeed have real lag, and slight micro stutters FACT, not made up. It was not as smooth and lag free as the Pixel XL.

Another example, my Wife and I both bought brand new Note 5's the week they came out, and brand new they were amazing phones, fast, and smooth, and Touchwiz seemed much improved. And then I got the Nexus itch again, and picked up the Nexus 6P on a whim, and will admit it was even smoother, than the Note 5. While my Wife kept her Note 5, I noticed like six months in, it felt like an old Windows 95 PC, totally bloated and laggy, and stuttering. So I performed a full wipe, and complete system fresh install on her Note 5 and that helped a ton to make the phone smooth again. Fast forward three months later, and the lag was back again. Compare that to my nexus 6P, and six months in, it felt like the day it was brand new, still smooth, still very little to no lag.

I really love the hardware and cool designs Samsung has been doing lately. But fool me once, and not again. I just can't trust a Samsung Galaxy phone will still buttery smooth and lag free 6+ months on. I do not understand how a Pixel phone can, but a Galaxy cannot ?

Oh and the Galaxy S7 Edge, wow that phone performed liked the S4, and looked like something out of Gingerbread days.

I did not actually own the S7 Edge, but in my office, I was tasked with settings up everyone's brand new S7 Edge's they got earlier this year. Out of 8 brand new Sprint S7 Edge's all of them were lag city BIG TIME. I was really shocked just how much micro stutter and slight hiccups they all had. Granted this is during the setup process, so tons of background downloads and installations were all going on at the same time/ on these phones, but even after I had them all setup, totally updated, and the apps installed they liked, yes it smoothed out a lot better, but that slight hiccup was still there. Pull the notification shade down, and sometimes you'd get a half second delay. Or go the Play Store, and maybe a 1 second pause before it opens up. To me that's totally unacceptable, a modern smartphone should perform actions faster than a blink of an eye, and never lag, never pause for half a second, never hiccup, it should be smooooth ALWAYS. And to me, the only phones that are that smooth are rooted and ROM'd Nexus / Pixel phones.

Dunno. My S7 Edge was completely lag free. Several co:workers still have theirs, same. A friend's S8 Plus is holding up like a champ.

Alacantra case shipped! Can't wait for that.

Overall I love this phone after one week. I miss the iOS ecosystem less and less now. The only thing I need to do is reneger to use the s pen more. Lol

My exynos S7 edge was and is a great phone.
No lag, good battery, great screen and a great camera.
The look of it was so easy to change, just download a theme and hazah!
My Note is better but not by any huge margin in day to day use...
Caveat: I've yet to use a phone that doesn't warm up and lag during setup.

The Alacantra case is so awesome. It feels great and looks premium. Not to mention it's going to look brand new for a very long time compared to leather which will crack and scratch pretty easily. The part I personally like the most is that it seriously resists sliding from the extra friction. I never drop my phone, but what happens a ridiculous amount of time is if I'm wearing something with loose pockets, then my phone will always slide out of my pocket between my car seat and console while I'm driving. Literally, with this case, I could leave my phone halfway out of my pocket and it's still not going anywhere :).

Yes we already know all of this. Why did you feel the need to come and tell us the same thing again.

I’m sure you’re both quite familiar with iOS but as a precaution, are you aware the auto brightness has moved from Display and Brightness to Accessibility? I wasn’t until until someone brought it up here—thought maybe you were in the same situation as me and weren’t aware it was actually on.

I was having dramatically worse battery life on my 7 Plus after updating to 11.0 but 11.01 seems to have fixed whatever my issue was as my battery performance has rebounded. Hope it can be sorted out for you both

Thanks, I'm going to take a look and see if my settings were changed, I just updated my iPad, haven't updated my phone yet. Auto brightness hurts my eyes.

Some things are automatic like the camera. Others you have to go into the app settings and change it do download to the SD card. I have Netflix and google play music set to download to the SD card. My comics are all downloaded to the SD card.
Netflix you stream don't you? Why download to the SD card?

Oh so I go to every app and set it to download to the SD card?

You can download stuff to view offline. For example when I’m on my commute to work.

Thanks I checked and auto brightness had somehow been toggled on during the software update. So I’ve switched it back off. That might have been effecting my battery life. I’ll see if it makes a difference.

Regarding face unlock, I like how by setting it up with sunglasses, it now recognizes my face with and without glasses. Also, I'm wondering if it learned my face better over the last week because it originally wouldn't work if I wasn't wearing sunglasses.

Anyone else with a Midnight Black Note8 find that it easily blends in with other black objects a little too well?

I put mine on top of a black box in my bedroom while I was getting something, for about 15mins I searched for the phone trying to figure out where I had put it only to realise it's right there on top of this black box

I am being dead serious though, the phone tends to blend a little too easily, the Note 4 was a dark grey so I'd find it easily and S7 Edge was black but with a nice shimmer to it, reminiscent of the S4 in Black. The Note8 is just damn near pure black, to a point where it could disappear
