Time, because it rules EVERYTHING!
Hate to say it but I've seen more and more reports of the Note 8 fingerprint sensor being next to the camera on the back.
I think it has to be one of the most stupid design choices Samsung has made! The S8 for example looks stunning otherwise..

Look at this S8 tear down then you can see battery location and size. There is no space below the camera. Most probably note 8 will use back the S8 components and layout to save cost. Anyway it is not the most ideal location to put the fps but once you got use to the position it isn't any more difficult than placing it centrally.

Yeah, it's clear Samsung isn't planning to redesign the innards to accommodate a lower, more centered back FPS. Whether they're saving that for the s9 or they're projecting that they'll figure out the front FPS by then, no one knows.

Everyone thinks it's just easy to move it to a more ideal location, but it requires redesigning.

We'll see what they do. I think it'll be a mistake to leave it next to the camera on such as large device. The only reason the s8 FPS gets a pass for me is because I can reach it.

Meh. Having the fps up there next to the cam really puts me off when on such a large device. A lower placed fps like on the Pixel is something they should make the effort to accommodate. But really I'd rather have a bit of bezel below the screen if it meant a front mounted fps. The ease of use of my 7+ fps honestly is a point I notice daily and remind me of how much I enjoy using this device, less display to bezel ratio or not.

Agree with your first thought.

Disagree with your second. More bezel-less design is something I'm not willing to roll back on. I don't believe Samsung is either. It's lead to the most ergonomic 5.8" smartphone ever (the s8 is smaller than the s7e edge!). And it's glorious to use.

Either they figure it out under the front display/current home button location, or they redesign the innards to accommodate a lower more centered fps on back. They can't go back to more bezels.

For what it's worth, facial unlock is superb. Any time I'm not in an ideal lighting situation, I go for the FPS. Unlocking my s8 is easy.

Not sure the same can be said with the bigger Note though.

I find the facial unlock is pretty good most of the time. The June firmware seems to make it faster to unlock. The fps is more secondary unlock method now.

Exactly. I don't know if you saw my post in that other thread, but unlocking with my face while it's on the wireless charging stand feels like magic. I literally just turn to it after waking, and it unlocks.

I have to agree......My S8+ might not be around for long. The combination of how narrow it is and the FPS location is putting me off. If the Note 8 has the same FPS and aspect ratio as the S8+....I will pass on it this year.

I find myself using my 7+ more and more just because of its ease of use....

Aspect ratio hasn't bothered me that much but I like the narrowness less and less. I am passing on the Note this year regardless of how it turns out. Gonna be Essential or Pixel 2 for Android the rest of the year for me. I'm still very interested in what the Note brings to the table all the same. I'm kinda sad that Sammy has made the whole S line different versions of the Note. Note used to be a very unique, singular device.

That scanner beside camera is non sense position. None of phones have that "issue". Belive in samsung realize that failure and hope would change something in newer models. I had wish to buy S8 but tryed that fps and i cant reach it properly by two hands either. So i buyed oldschool ip7 and waiting samsung to stop making that fails with expensive devices. Their cheap ones have not that type of fail in functionality.

With rumours of no FPS in the display for next iPhone and likely note 8 I think facial recognition will be what is going to be depended on until the companies get it right.

This insipid pursuit of thinness at the expense of overall system quality is just another form of spec-chasing, albeit on non-functional (weight, width, brightness, etc vs RAM capacity, word-size, GFlops, etc) attributes.

The "narrow" profile and curves are highly conducive to overall ergonomics. The Note is a different animal though and the greater viewing area of a traditional aspect ratio, and flat display will better suit the smart pen.

The Note 8 will be larger though so perhaps it will alleviate these concerns.

After using the S8+, I come to appreciate the narrower but longer dimension. With the navbar auto hide, a lot more info can be shown.

My r9s+ with a 6 in screen (screen is wider but shorter than S8+) doesn't show as much info.

I love the narrow profile of the s8. The aspect ratio along with the ever so slight edge display provides the most ergonomic 5.8" smartphone. Remember how important one handed use was -- an idea pioneered by Apple themselves? Samsung puts them to shame on that front.

I expect the note 8 to have the same aspect ratio, but overall wider and bigger. As others have said, this makes sense to accommodate the s pen. Perhaps those that find the s8 models too narrow will find the note 8 more comfortable.

Except for that impossible to reach FPS. :T

New case renderings. Even though the fp sensor is in line with the camera, I think there will be less chance to smudge the camera because of the space between them.

Depends on who you ask, many think it's worse for ergonomics and functionality. The Note 8 will probably make those issues worse since it is supposed to retain the same aspect ratio but be larger.

On my S8+ I love it. Damn near feels like I'm holding an iPhone 7 with a massive screen.

With the Note I think I would prefer a platter over a bar.

Reveal should be soon, but if the display really is only .1" larger, I can't see that making s substantial difference. Though I'm probably not upgrading either way. S8+ works great and I'm really happy with the overall experience.

That's what turned me off to the s8+, putting my iPhone 7+ next to it and the ip7 screen seemed larger to me, even though I know it really wasn't. Something like the Huawei p9's screen looked gargantuan next to the s8+ because it has a proper aspect ratio. The tallness of the s8 is deceiving and IMO makes the screen smaller than its specs. Chop it off to be 16:9 and it's probably closer to 5.7 I'll bet.

That was exactly my experience too. And the Mate 9 looks even more gargantuan compared to the S8+.

The Note 8 was a golden opportunity to provide for both those who prefer the narrow screen AND those who prefer 16:9 (without screen curving, even!), perhaps establishing the latter as a more productivity-focused format. This is looking like a very slightly larger S8+. Can't see how that's going to sell well. I for one am certainly not very interested.
