If Samsung is ready to go on the Note 8, I assume that'll mean the FPS will go on the back ala the S8.

We won't see it integrated into the front display until the S9. I'm okay with that; better they get it right than rush it into the Note 8.

If the Note 8 is even larger than the S8+, that location next to the camera is going to be a real problem. Hopefully, with the dual-camera module, it'll mean the FPS is lower/easier to reach.

One of the more prolific leakers has I'm afraid claaimed, 900 euro price tag, dual cameras and finger print sensor in the same place as the S8 :(

€900 wouldn't be surprising as the S8 RRP is €799 and the S8+ €899 so a similar €900-999 would indeed seem like a likely retail price.

The FP sensor in same place as the S8 however is silly and if true a big mistake.

totally agree with you. If the FPS is in the same place as the S8 i will skip the Note 8 this year.
They can't charge those prices for something with tech that is so counter intuitive.

Exactly, there is no point including a tech that is impractical and as you say counter intuitive to the point you end up relying on alternative method simply because of where / how they have implemented it levelling it with some redundancy.

Hopefully rumours of this are wrong and common sense will prevail. But I'm not hopeful.

The way things are shaping up this year. I might only be getting the iPhone 8 and Pixel 2 XL the rest of the year....

After using the S8 Plus, I'm good on Sammy for the rest of the year. And increasingly I've decided I place a premium on speed and fluidity. I'm much more interested in OP5, Essential, and Pixel 2 as a result.

Sadly, they can and they will. People that hold S8s and S8+s shouldn't expect to upgrade just for 2 extra GB RAM, a dual camera, 4K screen, a S-Pen, bigger screen, smaller battery, and a similar design footprint. The pricing doesn't make that worthwhile either.

I would pass on the OP5 because fwiw, it's priced similar to S8s on deals and that FHD display + 835 processor didn't do well enough for battery life. Idk about the Essential phone. Pixel 2 remains to be seen because there are rumors of no headphone jack.

I can not see the Note 8 having a 4K display. They are already defaulting to 1080p on their QHD displays with the S8/+ to save battery. Having a 4K display and running it at 1/4 resolution would be the very pinnacle of redundancy and utterly pointless. It would be adding extra manufacturing/ parts cost for little end user benefit.

I think the OP5 is faster than the S8. That's worth it to me.

But doesn't Sony do that with their 4k capable screens where it would work in 4k with viewing videos but the display shows up as FHD or QHD for using basic apps?

I think a 4k screen on a phone is redundant with a smaller batter capacity on the Note 8, but Samsung needs a spec sheet to justify a $900-$1000 USD asking price at the same time, so it's a catch 22 with what do you put in to make it more spec intensive while also not devaluing the user experience and getting complaints about pricing and then having to redo pricing strategy on the fly with aggressive discounts and perks.

It will be faster because of a lean version of Android that's near stock. However, the OnePlus 5's battery life is somewhat more disappointing. The FHD screen resolution doesn't make it a better buy than a OP3T or OP3 at a steep discount. Plus, the camera on the OP5 isn't earth shattering better to spend the extra $ if you can find the OP3/OP3T at a discount. Prices will drop even more as time progresses. If prices are within $50-$80 of each other, gotta go OP5 though. $480 is a disappointing price because it closes in on superb flagships being priced at better deals.

If I spend close to $500, I can go ahead and buy the S8/S8+ or get a BOGO deal with the LG G6 in the US. In non-US markets, you could probably get the OnePlus 5 since the sales for the S8/S8+ are high enough internationally where Samsung isn't aggressive with pricing strategies.

Yeah, if the fingerprint sensor is on the back by the camera, I might just skip it and get the Pixel 2 instead, that was one of the reasons I returned my S8 and frankly as cool as it was, I haven't really missed it. I still miss my Note 7 though.

I might do the same and get rid of my S8+. Quite frankly find myself using my iphone 7+ more and more. I thought the OPO5 would be nice but I think they over hyped the camera.

After what happened with the Note 7, Samsung would be CRAZY to expect people to pay $1K+ for the N8. But, it really doesn't matter, because Samsung resale value sucks balls anyway. You can get a brand new S8+ for less than $600ish in places like Swappa or Ebay.

Hopefully the FPS is something more like this: http://www.phonearena.com/news/Alle...dual-cameras-rear-fingerprint-scanner_id95353

$1k wow. Well truly this is the consumers fault, can you blame a business that follows supply and demand? I'm guilty as well, although seeing the poor resale value of Samsung devices I'm much less apt to buy from them. I'd rather buy an iPhone 8 and at least know it will retain a significant part of value. Samsung devices just drop down way too much, part of that is because they flood the market with so many BOGO offers. Worst case I'll pick up a Note 8 3 months after release for $700 or maybe less, although I think I'm pretty much off the Samsung bandwagon anyhow.

I must say this is an EXCELLENT opportunity for those cheap mobile phone vendors. From what I understand Huawei is making a killing, for example. I'm really really surprised that Xiaomi hasn't really pushed it's market this way, although from what I understand it's because they are afraid to stretch themselves too thin and are growing too fast even without the western market. I have the MiPaD 2 from Xiaomi and must say the quality is up there with Apple, I think they would make an absolute KILLING selling their devices here for half the price of other flagships.

I like these renders better... but not a fan of the FP scanner location or the camera hump, though.

I wasn't too keen on the Note this year regardless but if they really are keeping the FP sensor there, I'm all the way out on it. And the price doesn't make sense anymore. Note was more expensive because it offered the biggest display and cutting edge specs for the year. Not the case anymore. 1k for another iteration of the S8 Plus? No thanks.

Don't know how credible BGR is lately, but:

There must be something more to the FPS placement than Samsung just not wanting to. To get the FPS tech lower/centered on the back, it might require redesigning the innards, which Samsung doesn't seem willing to do in this year's iteration of their flagships. Maybe cause they hope to get the front-display FPS working properly by the S9? Who knows. (The latest I've read is that the front-display FPS is causing auto-brightness issues).

At least the flash is next to the FPS instead of the actual camera like on the S8.
