Don't know how credible BGR is lately, but:

There must be something more to the FPS placement than Samsung just not wanting to. To get the FPS tech lower/centered on the back, it might require redesigning the innards, which Samsung doesn't seem willing to do in this year's iteration of their flagships. Maybe cause they hope to get the front-display FPS working properly by the S9? Who knows. (The latest I've read is that the front-display FPS is causing auto-brightness issues).

At least the flash is next to the FPS instead of the actual camera like on the S8.

Yeah that's why I advised taking them with a grain of salt, BGR used to be awesome but now they just put up these stupid articles with inflammatory titles and almost zero content, AKA click baiting, and let's not forget the first grader contingent present on their comments section that just sit there and call each other obscenities, lol.

But if this FP sensor on the Note 8 is true, that will be a major downer, especially if Apple is able to make their underscreen FP sensor work.

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if Samsung decided this wasn't solvable this year without major redesigning of the innards, so they just have to make it the best they can.

The S9 will be really interesting. I really don't mind the back sensor, personally, but it should be in a more ideal location. We'll see what they do, and how they incorporate the dual-camera from the Note 8. They need to take a page out of LG G6 if they want to keep the FPS on the back.

Well if that render is true it kills this phone for be. Guess I'll be holding on to my Nexus 5 for awhile longer.

The S8+ is already hard enough to reach for the FPS sensor. It's fine on the S8, really, but didn't seem as acceptable on the S8+.

So that means on the Note 8, a presumably bigger/taller device than the S8+, it'll be near impossible to reach without some major hand shifting. Not good.

I expect Samsung to be one of the slowest in fingerprint tech as they have one of the worst as it is now in design, functionality and placement

If this were ten years ago, and everyone was still using Blackberrys, BGR would be relevant. They're complete junk now.

Well, for me the fps's position is not that important. However, the price is and I'm getting tired of Samsung thinking it can charge "Apple" prices. The fact is that Samsung isn't Apple. They don't have the rabid fans that will wait in line for the slightest upgrades and pay top dollar. It's not a slight. They just need to realize this and their mobile division could really take off. As a whole, the company is killing it. But, their mobile division could be doing much better.

Also, the bad experience with the Note 7 isn't making people wanting to pay $1000 (maybe a little exaggerated) for an upgrade.

Even though I will upgrade to the Note 8, I may wait a bit to see if there are good deals. With any past Note, this will be a first for me.

People still use BlackBerries. I have the KEYone. Best phone I've ever had. So yeah, it's still relevant. It's selling out everywhere.
It is selling out because expectations were so low they didn't make very many to begin with. Reviews have been mixed to say the least on the KEYone....most say it is a lag infested low level phone. Many die hard BB fans like it. Buts thats about all. No...BB is not relevant in today's smartphone world at all. Sales numbers prove this....

After trying one and returning it due to performance issues (lag) it's difficult to see how they can do anything else but position it towards BB die-hards in that niche.

Limiting supply to heat up demand and use that as a 'selling out' marketing ploy on a low volume, drip-feed production run isn't anything new but it gets headlines and consumers buy into it.

Nothing wrong with that but it's difficult to see any kind of growth that would trouble the current established big players.

Back on topic, I'm interested to see how wide the Note 8 will be. I'm not convinced the new aspect ratio would suit scribbling with the S-Pen if it's fairly narrow with edges that fall away.

No, Blackberrys are not relevant. I'm happy for you that you're enjoying your device all the same. But I was referring to BGR as being not relevant in that statement anyway.

Most haven't ever used it. I have no lag. And it IS relevant. It has Android 7.1.1. Just because it has a physical keyboard doesn't mean it's not relevant. One could say the Note isn't relevant because it has a stylus. Right? A phone having a hardware feature that no other phone has doesn't make it not relevant.

Umm...no. What makes the Blackberry irrelevant is lack of market share and lack of interest from the general public. You just said yourself - most haven't ever used it. That would be correct.

No one is making a judgement on the phone itself as a functioning device. At least I'm not.

and most never will use it....then the reviewers have not exactly given it high praise as well. It is a very niche device intended for the BB fanboys from the days of old....... Mediocre performance....mediocre camera. Cramped keyboard and lag from just about every reviewer.
So ummm no....BB is not relevant as you stated....at least not to the rest of the world.

Yeah, this was a weird exchange. I can appreciate someone liking their device but BB is done. It's not even BB anymore, it's a different company that bought the name "Blackberry" that slaps android on devices with a physical keyboard. I was a hardcore BB guy back in the day (I'm assuming much like most of this community). Loved loved loved my Curve (which might possibly be my favorite smartphone OF ALL TIME).

Most reviewers didn't like it from the outset so the review was pretty biased. It's still a very capable phone and that physical keyboard is wonderful. I highly suggest looking at the Detroit Borg's review and Mr. Mobile's review to get a feel for it from some of the better reviewers. You obviously are letting your bias show by assuming it's a "niche" product intended for "fanboys". Trust me, the keyboard isn't a "niche" product. It's very very useful with those keyboard shortcuts and trackpad capability. I can use a control-V paste shortcut. Any other phones that can do that? That's just an example though.

Plus, it's half the price of the upcoming Note. Anyone foolish enough to pay a grand for a new phone is crazy. Trust me, I was holding out for the new Note because I loved my Note 5 but I had the feeling last month that it was going to be upwards of a grand so I started looking elsewhere.

Just stop labeling phones as "niche" just because it has features that you don't like.

Wha? He's labeling it "niche" because a tiny tiny fraction of a portion of the smartphone populace bought the phone. Do you have data showing that hte phone is wildly popular or something?

The phone is for BB fanboys....... if it works for you then great! But your original statement said BB was relevant....which is pure rubbish! No one but pure BB fanboys would think BB is relevant in today's smartphone landscape. Only die-hard BB fanboys would think so. Then sales, market share and reviews of the phone bears this out as well.

Do you know what "niche" means? here it is for you...
adjective
  1. 1.
denoting or relating to products, services, or interests that appeal to a small, specialized section of the population.
"other companies in this space had to adapt to being niche players"
I think BB and the KEYone with its physical keyboard fits this description very well. Name one top selling smartphone with a physical keyboard? Yeah...good luck with that......that is the definition of a niche product.

I used to love BB but I have no desire to ever go back to a physical keyboard on a phone and I would think neither do most people, it is great there is an option for people who do though

The Galaxy Note line itself has historically been a niche product, catering to a very specific market. And the upcoming Note 8 will probably outsell the KEYone 50 fold at close to double the price. So what exactly does that make the BB? Give you one hint. ;)
