If ever they should want to get ahead of the iPhone launch, this year would be it.

I'm back on the Note 5 now the Nougat update finally arrived... much improved software. I'd be ready to pay in August assuming it's problem-free.
Sadly that rush to get ahead of the iPhone needlessly is one of the contributing factors to the Note 7 battery / design issue. I think they should take their time and get the Note 8 perfect rather than play first past the post.

Also, Apple is projected to have severe supply constraints of the iPhone 8 model, to which the Note 8 will be going up against. Samsung doesn't need to rush the Note 8 per se.

Samsung should do what they did with the S8. They didn't rush it post-Note 7 just to get something new back out on the market. They got it right, and in fact, now have the industry-leading battery QC-ing process.

They should launch the Note 8 right.

I would even prefer they wait until Android O is available and launch then, I’m fine waiting until October/November to get that.

I think launching it after Iphone 8 has a better effect. Any news before becomes old news when iphone is launched. I think the Note 8 can stand up to new iphone in terms of design and functions. And it will get noticed more since all those "versus" articles will flood the web.

At this point i don't think they are rushing it. I think they have the design and software set. They have the S8+ as the prototype to work with. So any battery issues would have come out in the S8+ models already.
I think they were waiting to get the tech from Synoptic to put the FPS under the front display. Now that that technology won't be ready they will just go ahead and put the FPS in the back of the phone. Hopefully it will be round and under the camera this time!

Scary thought how the giga-bit LTE speeds will feel yesteryear in a matter of months as soon as Samsung pointed to more device parity with its two main flagships. If they offer 600 MHz in the Note 8, that makes the decision easier for me to commit to a phone for 2-3 years. I am curious to see how bad the lag gets on Samsung devices once they get into the 8-12 month range because people vary on this aspect. Some say they have it while others say they don't. My S7 is about 3 months old, but I never turn it on these days beside for VR. The notifications coming in go off like crazy too haha. I will go back to my SE ever so often.

My husband is fighting lag, sorry to say. He also gets the occasional day when an app will go rogue in the background and drain his battery really fast.

I'm not having any issues like that, but then I don't use my S8+ as my main phone and I don't use all the business and financial services apps he uses.

Still, he says he likes his S8+ just fine. He's got it set up just the way he likes to work with his Frontier watch. He really does not like Apple Watch so he doesn't want to go back to his iPhone. But he says if he has to travel internationally he would pop the Sim back in his iPhone because he trusts it a little more at this point.

He is still really interested in the Note 8. I'm pretty content with the S8+. So I don't know what I'm going to do, but I will certainly keep reading any news I can find.

.

I think it is the Samsung browser causing this issue. My phone felt warm when not in use sometimes. Now that i have set up a tasker task to kill the internet app when I am not using phone, battery drain doesn't happen any more.

Thanks I'll pass that along to my husband!

That's just a lot of here say though with no proof. It was the way the batteries were made as I understand, it was not in a controlled environment as it was meant to be.

It wasn't the batteries on their own per se. It was the fact that the N7 chassis never allowed for expansion along with other factors.

A design oversight like that would likely never have happened had more time being allocated to R&D and more importantly 'deep' testing.

That and their testing methods had some flaws in them. They would have found this design flaw using the current stated testing methods.
The cells expanded when they got hot and leaked into the the next cell.
There is a great explanation here

Too often, the rush to be first results in safety violations, unanticipated conditions, unrealistic expectations, etc.

Still all here say. Has Damaung officially stated it was the internal design at fault as well?

The fact that the supposed repackaged note 7's will feature smaller capacity batteries is telling, either way the point I made remains they should not rush the note 8 simply because of the iPhone 8.

Rushing leads to mistakes. Whatever form they take.

Oh yeah, they shouldn't rush it. I doubt they will though, the S8 has been fine with no big issues reported.
Will be good to see what they do with it, plus the One Plus 5 is out on Tuesday :) if that goes bezelles it could potentially match the iPhone 7 size!

Yeah I skipped the 3 & 3T but I am very interested to see what OP do with the 5, and more over the price this year. I hope the rumours that invite system (so far rumoured for India) doesn't materialise for any territory. But it's OP so it wouldn't surprise me.

Looks like the Note 8 will have a rear FP sensor. Hopefully it responds better than the S8's finicky one. I think that will play a factor in the OS agnostic crowd that could go with the iPhone 8 or Note 8.
