That’s unfortunate. That might be a deal breaker for me because multimedia sound is important on a phone now that I no longer have my iPad Pro.
Hi. Just to clarify we are speaking about the speaker on the Note 8 not the sound produced via the headphone jack?
The SPEAKER is the normal Samsung affair. Listening via Headphones is altogether another kettle of fish. The Note 8 has a superb DAC and the amp is good for a mobile phone. The headphone jack will power head gear to around a max of 50ohms. If you have Audiophile headphones you will need an external portable DAC-amp, or a desk top equivalent. This goes for all smartphones and not just the Note 8.
The LG V30 has a very good quality quad DAC but again the internal amp will not drive high ohm cans.
These are, after all, smartphones and not DAP's.
Hope that helps a little?

You can replace the battery on the Note 4 so may be the wiser 'back up' lomg term. The S7 mmmmm, great mobile but when the battery dies mmmmm,One shouldn't, it's a piece of tech, it's going to lose value regardless, unless it's a once off or a 1st of a Series etc etc...
I've never sold an old phone. We usually give our old tech away to less fortunate people that need it. The other day I wanted to take my mother's old iPhone 5S, to test an app a client was working on and it turned out she had already given it away. Although I have kept my old Note 4 and S7 Edge as I am still not sure which I want to keep as my backup phone
Shhh, Why not keep them both? I wont tell a soul, I promise.
