Total speculation.

*Total* speculation? No. That's just silly. It's not a wild guess as to how two competing devices with track records will hold up over time. The Note 8 may break the mold but it would be a pretty big surprise if it runs as fluidly and with as much stability as a Pixel over the life of the phone.

And reviews of the Note 8 by folks that have had many prior Notes seem to think it doesn't have the sluggishness that prior model had. So who knows? That is why I said its speculation. I also don't understand why if after 6 months of use it slows down that you could just reset it to factory settings, and get back to where you were relatively easily.

I've owned every iteration of Note since 2, and I agree with those folks that this one runs better than any Sammy device I've ever owned. That's not the criteria for my comment though. I would be very surprised if it ran as well as the Pixel does over the life of the phone. Right now the Pixel XL 2 runs more fluidly than the Note 8 does. That doesn't mean the note 8 is sluggish or laggy or any of that.

Well you have more experience than me... but every phone I've ever owned has slowed due to updates designed to run on newer hardware. I'm just getting tired of constant posts of "Samsung bloatware makes it sluggish", "Android is crap", etc.. when the Note 8 runs as smooth as any smartphone I've owned (and I've owned a lot of them), and their software is pretty good.

Most of that is fanboy crap. Android runs great on high end flagships, and has for a few years now. Sammy has upped it's game considerably to where I think they offer the best skinned Android experience. Pixel XL OG last year was the first Android phone, however, that ran flawlessly for me for an entire year.

Yeah it's really a crapshoot between the two. I've thought about the Pixel and stock Android but then every time I pull out the S Pen or even look at the beautiful screen, I'm reminded why I went the Sammy route. Really though, to each their own.

I think the main reason for overtime slowdown is over the years you have accumulated too many apps that you don't use (esp those apps with push/background notification activated). I think this phenomenon applies to any OS (android or otherwise).

I have the Note 5 and it doesnt seem to have slowed down in 2+ years other than battery capacity has deteriorated to 75% of original. Simple reason: I dont keep junks in the phone.

When the hell did Samsung Internet become the best mobile browser going?

Why not?

Notable advantages:
- very fast and stable
- Samsung Pass integration
- (multiple) Ad / tracking blockers
- back-to-top button, scroll bar
- great night mode
- floating menu /video assistant

The only thing missing is pull to refresh.

One more thing I would add is the ability to get rid of the status bar. Android in general should have that setting throughout the whole operating system. No status bar and no navigation bar gives you FULL USE of your display. Immersive Mode has been around since KitKat 4.4. Make it an option in settings Google. I'm glad Samsung allows you to get rid of the navigation bar at least.

Yes, this is one feature I loved on my S8.

Its called device maintenance ...use it every once in a while to smoothen things back up to normal if it ever does happen. Too bad Verizon customers don't have this feature i think.

Any UK people know of good deals on the Note 8 at the moment? I'm thinking of trying one out to see if it can replace my S8 and iPad :)

Well I got my note 8 on a contract with Vodafone where I get 32gb data a month and 2 years Spotify (I was paying £10 a month for this) for £49.50 a month!
It's expensive but that was the best deal I could find when I compared all the networks.....

I understand device maintenance. I also understand that my Pixel didn't require it after a year of heavy usage.

Not terrible but I'm looking for SIM free ideally - I'm done signing up to 2 year contracts :)

So you would rule out buying a product that has features you might want because you have to hit a maintenance button a couple times a year? That would be like buying a car based solely on which one had the best maintenance intervals.

Yes but at what expense? You lose out on so many fantastic features on Vanilla Android while gaining a small speed advantage. I guess everyone is different :). I prefer my phone to have more features over speed personally.

Or apparently just hitting a button a couple times a year for maintenance. I'll take the features too.
