I think this device has piqued my interest after all. I'll have to feel it in hand. I don't think I'll be moving on to the new iPhone this year. I started with Android and my Note 3 is starting to act up. I'll be keeping my 7 plus and probably my 6s, I've still got a 5c too. However, my daily driver I'd like to see how my signal will be on the Note 8. I may end up with just the S8, but it feels like it's time to enjoy Android again.

Watched Android Authority (or was it Central's?) Note8 vs. Essential PH1 comparison and all I could do was LOL at how the PH1 looked like a phone made by amateurs next to the glorious Note8, the Note8 really has a presence about it kind of like how the big body Range Rover Vogue (NOT Evoque) do, they stand out in traffic and parking lots and have a certain presence and opulence about them.

Even though I'm pretty intrigued by the Note8, its price combined with the somewhat unimpressive 64GB of storage is a bit of a letdown. For after all, the Note8 being dual-SIM is attractive, but the SIM slot is the hybrid model which means that I'd need to pick between another SIM and a microSD, and in that case 64GB only could become a problem rather quickly.

This is my sentiment too. Although I started with IOS, went to android for a few years and then went back to ios in late 2014. However I feel as though it's time to be on android again.

It's too bad none of These devices or any Android flagship has something like ProMotion 120hz. It's really underrated and after experiencing it in action, my 7 Plus feels very laggy in comparison and I imagine so will the Android flagships.

Can't really say I notice it on my ipad pro 10.5. Yes it's faster and more fluid than my old ipad air 2 or even my 7 plus but I get that every time I get a new device. I don't draw with the S-pen so maybe that's why I haven't noticed it.

Wha? The Essential's industrial design is much nicer than the Note's, imo. I still don't like Sammy's new long/thin design aesthetic. As I've mentioned before, the S8 Plus looks like a universal remote when the screen is off. Note comes across a little better due to less severe curving of the screen.

Hmmm...
I'm not sure what I think about this phone honestly. The price is insane, the back is odd, smallish battery, it don't appeal to me even from a tech geek standpoint? Maybe my opinion will change when I actually see it in person, but it's more Samsung with more Samsung stuff on it. Yes, Sammy is trying to become the next Apple or Amazon.

Still to me this note8 kind of seems like a bit of a let down. More of the same incremental update for the sake of doing so. I guess that is most devices now days.

It kind of makes me want to look at an unlocked s8+ to tinker with (root) because the decent price of it. Then again why when I have an s7e? My s7 is a bit too small for me at times, the note looks a bit too massive, kind of like the old nexus 6.

I don't know, just a bit of mind rambling whilst I drink my morning coffee.

I'm a sucker for those Range Rovers. ;)

I hate the Essential's design with the camera in the display, it looks tacky the way the Notification Bar goes thicker in some apps and the display has to readjust when playing video to compensate for the Camera sitting inside it.

You do not understand how much I hate that Camera sitting in there like that, it makes absolutely no sense to me, they created a strange flaw, and it looks like Apple are doing the same thing, I hope their implementation won't be as awkward.

Samsung's tall & narrow design helps greatly with ergonomics, and IMO the Note8 is the best implementation of it.

These are all of course my opinions, I'd like the Essential to be successful, we need more competition in the industry, but I quite simply doubt the PH1 is even going to have a successor, to me it seems to be a stepping stone for Andy's greater vision, but that's all for another thread, I guess. :)

Range Rovers are ten a penny here in Britain so don't stand out too much. If you drive one here you're usually a prick or a footballers wife lol.

OLED is already 90Hz and the reason they've been used exclusively in VR goggles. In comparison, ProMotion is variable and can as low as 24Hz.

What makes you prefer LCD? I do like it myself but OLED is better for battery life in my usage as most of my apps run a dark mode and I use dark wallpapers.

If this was sarcasm, totally missed it!
it was sarcasm aimed at a particular poster on these forums :) I hate backlight based displays, they are crude with so many inherent issues. Ive always been a Plasma and OLED fan.

Yeah. I like LCD as it's decent looking but OLED is just beautiful. Considering how I really love dark colors, having a device with OLED is very beneficial for power consumption and visual enjoyment.

Unless the dark mode is completely 100% black and not what 99% of dark modes merely are which is simply just an overall darker GUI (often grey or blue) then you are not really saving any battery as the pixel is illuminated regardless.

Regarding OLED and LCD.

There are benefits to LCD on the way sub pixels are arranged over OLED.

Let's take two QHD Screens, of which a 1440P has a total of 3,686,400 Pixels.

Now when we count how each pixel is arranged, the subpixel arrangement.

On a 1440P OLED screen there are 3,686,400 Green SubPixels, 1,843,200 Red Subpixels, 1,843,200 Blue Subpixels.

This means there are 7,372,800 lighting elements in a 1440P OLED Screen.

An IPS LCD has 3 subpixels per pixel.

This means 11,059,200 lighting elements on a 1440P LCD screen

This means a 1440P OLED Screen only has 67% of the same number of tiny little colored dots which make up detail of a LCD screen of the same resolution.

1080P has 2,073,600 Pixels

OLED has 2,073,600 Green SubPixels, 1,036,800 Red Subpixels, 1,036,800 Blue Subpixels.

There are 4,147200 Lighting Elements on a 1080P OLED Screen

Once again IPS LCD has 3 subpixels per pixel. This means there are 6,220,800 Lighting Elements on a 1080P LCD Screen

So what does this all mean?

A) A 1440p LCD has 11M subpixels, which is 4M more subpixel lighting elements compared to the OLED despite them sharing the same resolution. A 1440P pentile oled (7.3M lighting elements) in terms of image quality, is therefore closer to a 1080P LCD screen (6.2M lighting elements) than 1440p LCD screen.

B) a 1440P OLED screen used in the hand, you might not be able to see the pentile, but in VR where the pixels are magnified, it is still VERY relevant, an IPS 1440P screen has 11M lighting elements where a pentile oled only has 7.3M, therefore an IPS screen will give you much more detail.

Of course there are definite benefits to OLED such as contrast & black levels but currently no 100% percent answer to one being better than the other. A lot of it at the moment boils down to subjective preferences.

The future will change that.

However, where there will be a very definite improvement is when full RGB AMOLED displays finally launch. Where we finally have the benefits of both technologies without the weakness. However it isn't looking like we are closer to market of those screens just yet, despite them 'on the way' for the last number of years. (Super Amoled Plus is closest we have right now).

The take from all this is that there is still room to improve with regards to our displays in the future. That future will be Full RGB AMOLED. Samsung's Super Amoled + tech is getting ever closer to that realisation, hopefully 2018 will finally usher the true next gen.

However ... the automatic presumption and assertion that AMOLED is better than LCD that a number of users perpetuate on this fora is 'currently' based not on any definitive fact but on mere subjective preference and asserted as fact.

There are benefits to a great LCD and a great AMOLED display and equally negatives. Likewise there are plenty of sub-par AMOLED displays as there are LCD.
