I just hope Samsung are supplying these quality Super AMOLED plus panels for the iPhone 8 and not what we have seen in the past where they have supplied what can only be described as average and sometimes subpar versions to third party OEMs.

The Pixel & Pixel XL both use Samsung Super AMOLED Plus panels but both fall a mile behind the standard of even the S7/7e with a max NIT of 547 making them very hard to see outdoors in sunlight.

They also supplied the AMOLED panels for various Moto devices such as the X Force in the past too and that display was truly awful compared to the S6 that launched the same year.

So I am hoping Apple are going to force a Samsung to give them equivalent quality panels to the galaxy / note flagship and not the mediocre ones that often feel like they were rejects from the factory floor.

As an Android user it's not really a concern for me but I have a feeling the Panels Apple get from Samsung will have to pass a QC test set by Apple with certain KPI's that will have to be met. That being said I don't see Samsung suppling the same quality panel that is in the Note 8.

Yeah my hope is Apple's QC will force Samsung to supply the higher quality panels. I hope we at least get one equivalent to the S7 or S8 in brightness, and with Apple presumably opting for a more RGB accurate colour calibration (equivalent to the 'Basic' mode on the Samsung devices) as they favour colour accuracy rather than saturation.

Not too long now before we actually find out anyway. Though my greatest trepidation remains in that I still fear the 'euro' price ....

Are the new panels designed by Apple and manufactured by Samsung? I also seem to remember apple investing a ton in Samsung, included helping them build a new manufacturing plant, so I would hope Apple gets the good panels.

Samsung has always kept the best AMOLED for their flagship phones, don't see it changing anytime soon.

I went to a Samsung store and played around with the Note8 a bit. The screen is awesome indeed, but that fingerprint reader was even more awkwardly positioned than I initially thought. I don't think I'm going to blow over 1000€ on something where a key component is awkward to use.

Considering Apple only recently started R&D into their own OLED screens, pretty sure the panels in the iphone 8 are designed and manufactured by Samsung. AFAIK, Apple never invested any money into Samsung. Did some quick google-fu and it seems that all of Samsung Display's expansions were funded on their own dime.

Honestly with Apple putting money into R&D on OLED and slightly into Micro-LED screens tells me that Samsung is providing top quality screens.

Read an MR article earlier in the month saying LG and Samsung are fighting for Apple's OLED screens and building new factories just for Apple. Says something to the quality of screens they'll be giving to Apple.

Keep in mind, OLED business is also a big revenue getter for Samsung. Part of their many sources of revenue.

I didn't think Samsung will give them their best panels and they have some leverage here because apart from LG who can't make as many panels as Apple would need there isn't anyone else. They need Samsung. I'm sure Samsung will give them a good display but not their best.

I'm sure Apple will never pay for Samsung's best panels. Apple is a company that's all about profit. They most likely purchased S6 panels just to save money and will market it as the greatest ever and the fanboys will believe them.

They can not purchase standard panels due to the fact they are using non conventional dimensions / cutout and that means there is a greater chance of the better quality panels because of the odd shape there would be more QC as I imagine the unconventional shape would require tighter control and yields.

Perhaps, but with all the focus that's going to be on the device, if there is anything less than quality panels you can bet your bottom dollar all the reviews will criticise it, and in turn the blame will get shifted inevitably towards Samsung with Apple no doubt throwing a spanner in the works.

Likewise whilst Apple may need Samsung for these parts, Samsung ultimately also needs the $billions Apple are spending.

Unlike other OEMs (even Google) where Samsung only sell relatively low quantities of panels, Apple are bigger fish and with potentially millions upon millions of displays needed it would be stupid to bite the hand that feeds them.

I think we will get a quality panel, far better than they have supplied other OEMs in the past - but likely not as good as the Note 8.

It was only reported last month that Apple was investing in the development of OLED panels for the future. The iPhone 8 will most probably be supplied only by Samsung. I'm sure it's in both of their interests to work together and deliver top quality panels at this stage.

Oh yes. Tractors on back woods country roads with twists and turns and miles between passing zones. Some of the drivers of these contraptions will go way off the road to allow you to pass but some can't/won't depending on the situation.

Back to the phone:

Since I am planning to keep my 7 Plus rather than trade, I'm going to take my time to really read about the iPhone and Note 8. I didn't do enough research this last go and this Intel modem has caused me real grief with data speeds and reception.

I'd like to make sure if I'm going to drop such a huge amount, I'm going to ensure it will make my $90 a month unlimited grandfathered T-Mobile plan with no HD throttle enforced, will be used thoroughly.
(OT: Hey, I hope you're in a warm, cozy dry inland part of Texas. We have family and friends and my husband's boss dealing with a variety of experiences from Austin to Houston to San Marcos. What a nightmare this has been for everyone in the Hurricane's path).

Okay back on topic, I also have a 256 GB model, matte black. I'm hanging onto it, too. I don't have an Intel modem but call quality is not consistently good on mine, either. In fact, I use my Samsung to make calls. I'm hanging on to my 7 Plus, too, and if the iPhone 8 doesn't give me my money's worth back in call quality and display and battery performance...back it goes.

I'm not sure what to do about Note 8. That would be a pain in the tail to return if I got it through the Note 7 owners trade in deal (trading in my S7 or S7 Edge). So I'm not doing anything yet. I know the Note 8 is going to be a good phone because my S8+ is pretty good. The Note 8 would upgrade my Samsung experience a bit. I'm just glad I don't have to rush any decisions.

At some point I am going back to one SIM card, probably in 2018 when the two year contract we signed for our Note 7 BOGO deal expires. My husband and I want to pare down our monthly expenses and go back to one line per person. So this is going to be a pivotal year where one upgrade path will win over another. Samsung vs Apple. Lol--I'll probably end up with Pixel or HtC. HTC 10 still beats even my newest phones on call quality inbound and outbound. That phone is THE best cell phone I have ever used when talking just in terms of it being a phone. Ooooooo!

Note 8 has no band 71 support on T-Mobile means you won't get prime 600MHz frequency band that benefits in-building reception. That's probably a no-go for me since I'm thinking of switching from Verizon to T-Mobile. Note 9 will be better with 7nm Snapdragon 845 and hopefully Windows 10 DeX.

Not most likely, its public knowledge that Samsung will be the sole supplier for the next 2 years (at least).

I really think next years Note will be the perfect phablet if they can remove the top and bottom bezels.

So here's something I'm wondering. I believe that the S8 Plus is the first S line with a screen bigger than 5.5". So that being the case, will that phone cannibalize sales of the Note and vice versa? It would seem the chief differentiator between the two will be the stylus.

I believe the S8+ will cannibalize the Note 8 sales because of the screen size. Working in the wireless industry I’ve had people buying the Note line strictly for a larger screen size. Since the very first Note I’ve only had two customers interested in it for the S Pen. One customer used it for note taking, and the other was a LEO who had a side business doing landscaping and would use the S Pen to mark on photos for his jobs.

I thought i read somewhere that maybe 5% of Note buyers use the stylus. Main reason for purchase was screen size compared to other phones at the time. Can't remember where or timeframe I read it.

I’d be surprised if it was 5% honestly. I always got the Note for the screen size and used my S Pen maybe five times in the last seven years.

That’s what I’m thinking about doing, but I can get the Note 7 preorder discount so I’m torn.

Same boat, my wife was talking wanting me to order, haven't yet, I'm waiting until the iPhone announcement to make sure I can afford both, but I really haven't been too hyped up about the Note 8, yes it's an awesome device and that camera is great, but the height still bothers me. I'm much more excited to get my essential phone this week and the next iPhone. But if Samsung can take out those top and bottom bezels count me back in. Next years Note is the one I'm looking forward to, but I've got the discount now.
