Not George:p
Truth be told, I'd forgotten George's name

Anyone seen the inappropriate skit they made?
It's terrible quality visually but when I first watched it I thought it was for real (was presented that way).
I'd post it here but I don't know if I'd breach the rules?

Anyway...

Hey guys, can machine text be easily extracted from lock screen notes? Have searched online but I can't find any clear answer.

I was just coming to post this the Note8 obliterated that iPhone 8 Plus

This phone is truly incredible

Even in the speed test did you see how the Note8 managed to sometimes beat the 8 Plus or be close to it!? This thing is a beast!

Goes to show Benchmarks don't mean a thing!

Wonder how fast it will be in six months. My Note 5 has held up fairly well but definitely isn’t as fast as when new in spite of managing the maintenance on it.

What's funny is that it's lighter than 8+but I've seen nothing but iPhone users complain about its heft. It feels solid to me but it's not heavy at all. Even with the case I have on mine.

It has a nice weight to it and like you say, solid. And the difference in height compared to the 8+ is hardly anything.

exactly...I have both phones and the 8 plus is definitely heftier than the Note 8 but not by much.

So iPhone 8+ it is?

For now I'm content with my 7+. I plan on trying to order an iPhone X and run with that for a while, if I can't get a preorder in then I may grab a 8+. Also on the short list is the Pixel XL2 depending on what that turns out to be, and the v30.

Go V30 or Pixel XL2. Gotta escape the "dumbification of iOS," right?

That only applies to the ipad/tablet scenario. Although IMO iOS is more primitive than Android, it's adequate because it's a much smaller device used in a different way. But that's only my personal use scenario, everyone is different. I require much less of my smartphone these days and am happy with making calls, notifications and checking email. Conversely I demand much more of my tablet and need something that can run a full OS and legacy programs, and has flexibility.

Then why not use a Moto G5 or an iPhone SE to save $? Or just stick with an older generation to avoid paying Apple Taxes in 2017?

If you get the X, I'm gonna start calling you "Notch" :D

You mean like this ?

Thanks, yeah I've seen you can do that but isn't there any less convoluted way to do it? Like: write note > hit "convert to text" button > receive text you can share on the spot or c/p and use elsewhere. That would bring lockscreen notes from 'kinda cool' to incredibly useful.

Money isn't the issue, I don't really care much how much the phones cost I just always go for the latest and greatest.

to be honest....the bezels do not bother me at all. Same thing with the Pixel too. It actually makes it easier to hold and pickup.

People keep saying stuff about the bezels as though it means something. That is purely a form factor preference, it's not a function, it's not a feature, it's not anything. If you feel it "looks" outdated, then buy something you think looks cooler.

So much for Apple fans being the ones who are slaves to marketing, eh?

The lack of bezels do mean something ... it means a larger display with a smaller device footprint.

Pricing and specs aside, why would anyone choose the larger iPhone 8 Plus with a smaller display vs the smaller iPhone X with a larger display?

Smaller device footprint is, again, a preference. There are plenty of people who prefer bezels/don't care because it gives them a purchase with which to hold the phone.

Why someone would prefer the 8 Plus:

  • Same/slightly bigger viewable display area
  • Does not have that notch, which in landscape could be distracting to some.
  • Touch ID vs Face ID
  • Software profile for the X appears to be that of the 8, not the larger screened 8 Plus; which means no double panes in email and settings, no home screen rotation, etc
  • You are essentially a beta tester for a brand new form factor and software profile due to the notch and new ID unlock. Granted, for a segment of people (myself included) early adoption is the name of the game, but at 1K you might be wary if this thing is your lifeblood daily driver.
So there are a few reasons. The above isn't mean to be a criticism of the X. It's just not a slam dunk between the two phones is the point. I know that was the knee jerk reaction upon the X's announcement but as we find out more about the X, and the 8 Plus in daily use, the X does not profile to be a "better" version of the previous generation but a thing unto itself.

Yes, it's a preference just like anything else. Wanting Touch ID and/or preferring it on the front is also a preference. But we know what the general preference will be among the general population.

But again, as I mentioned price and specs aside. Most will choose the larger display in a smaller device footprint. Anyone would lose their money if they bet against that.
