Thought I'd post some more thoughts now I've used the phone over 24 hours.

I still don't really feel like I have made my mind up on this device yet. I don't think it's a case of you either just like it or you don't. It's a very complex phone, IMO and in a way that's part of its charm but also part of the problem.

I will try to make sense with what I write, but when I'm still not sure on it myself it might not make full sense unless you've had a hands on / used one yourself. :)

Pros
+ Displays. Both, but particularly that inside display. Absolutely amazing. When you turn vivid mode off that is... no one wants eye bleeding, neon colour. Well, some might, but I find Samsung's vivd mode to be absolutely awful. Even their basic mode is still too dialled up for me, but I am coming from a Sony 4k OLED display which is the most colour accurate phone screen I have ever had the pleasure of using.

View attachment 959283

+ 120hz - I will be honest, whilst this is amazing to have - I don't notice the difference between 90 and 120. From 60-90 I absolutely do. But the Pixel 4's device which was the last device I used with full 90hz, and my Xperia 1 ii which had 'motion sense' to make 60 look smoother, I can't see a huge increase in fluidity. It's still a massive plus though.

+ Camera - I am marking this as a positive, as when it gets it right - it delivers a great picture. I am not sure I love Samsung's post processing. Point and shoot is quick, responsive and I quite like the 'Best Shot' feature which is a nice to have. Video recording always great with Samsung. No complaints from me there!
I need a camera that captures solid pictures as I have a local business I have been running since August so it has to be able to take detailed photos. This passed my Loaf Cake test so it's a thumbs up from me.

+ Build quality. Absolutely top notch. Feels incredible - so premium. The Bronze colour I have is actually gorgeous. I think I would have gone black if ever I was going to buy one personally, but now I have this bronze I do think I like the look of it over black. The front display doesn't look as odd with bronze IMO, as the black one makes it look like the screen has a black bar down the side. Whereas the bronze makes it seem obvious that it isn't actually the screen, and just the hinge. Soft touch back also a win. The phone looks a lot less grubby in this matte finish.

+ Versatility. The sheer options you have with a device like this. I have a free Disney + trial currently and last night we took our puppy to have her first groom. The lady said she would be an hour and we were 40 mins from home so we just sat and waited. I loaded up Disney + and we watched The Simpson's. :D
Obviously, I could have done this on any phone - no biggie. But it was nice to actually feel more immersed with a screen like this.

All media content is just fantastic on this thing. I've been wanting to start reading again and last night downloaded a book on the Kindle app. I hate reading on a smartphone and would never entertain the idea. With this - I love it. A lot of talk about this phone replacing a tablet - it cannot IMO. But who needs a Kindle anymore?! That is a device it can 100% replace!

View attachment 959282

Xbox Game Pass and gaming in general - just incredible. The Glap controller apparently holds this device in perfectly, despite it not being optimised for it. Even with just my Xbox controller this works perfectly. I don't think I'd play anything too heavy on it (FPS online etc) as I don't think it would work too well for that. But for solo games and story driven games (my preferred games) this is perfect.

View attachment 959285

I haven't used any split screen stuff yet but I know that will come in very handy as and when I need to.

+ Optimised apps. When apps are optimised and you get split screen views (Outlook, Samsung's own apps etc) - this thing is a game changer. It's just a more pleasant viewing experience. That is what needs to happen across the board with all apps. For now, the Twitter web page is actually better than the app as the app just magnifies itself. Not bad, as it's still very useable, but it would be nice to see the same kind of layout as Twitter URL.

View attachment 959281

+ Web browsing. Samsung's browser has always been my absolute go to on Android, and with this phone it's even better. I think on regular mobiles Samsung gives you the option to add tabs that are visible on screen rather than in the card view to scroll through. But tab view on this phone is perfect. It feels like a full non-mobile browser and just makes managing multiple tabs a breeze.

+ Good Lock. This app is such fun to use. I love the customisation it brings. I have added so many handy settings to the phone using this. Not a Fold feature, but being able to choose which apps are full screen through it is great. Although Instagram needs to stay in the native resolution IMO - bars and all. It just doesn't work full screen. I quite like the bars personally.

+ Haptics. They're good. They're not amazing - but they're good. I'll take them and I am VERY picky with haptics.

There are many, many positives with this phone. I don't think I've even covered everything, but these are the takeaways so far from a small amount of time with it.

It's not all roses though. Here's the not so good stuff (for me).

- Buggy. It's a bit buggy. Again, this is just MY experience. So please no "well that must just be you" - I appreciate everyone has a different experience and these are likely to be isolated to just me.
I've had several app crashes. I loaded Spotify yesterday and it just hung on a black screen. I force closed it and tried again - same thing. I closed the phone and it just beamed the black screen to the front display. I had to restart the phone to get it to work.

When travelling to dog groomers yesterday (I wasn't driving) - I needed to check where it was when we neared the place. I tried to load Google Maps but I had 'no connection'. My signal was showing full bars and 4g. No app would refresh. It was as if there was no mobile signal. I again, had to reset the phone to get it to work. Once reset it was fine. Odd.

I opened Reddit and there was big red line down the middle of the app. I panicked thinking it was my screen - but it was just the app. I force closed it and it was then fine. Again - odd.

View attachment 959272

- Fingerprint scanner. It isn't very good IMO. I have had several messages throughout the day to say 'wait 30 seconds, too many attempts'. I just don't find it as good as Apple's or Google's FPS. I don't know if it's these side mounted ones, as my Xperia's FPS's have been temperamental too. I could try Face Unlock, but ehhh.

- Weight. Yes, an obvious one as anyone would know it's heavy just by checking the weight of the thing online. But it is damn heavy. When it's open it isn't so much of an issue as you will generally be using two hands to handle it then. But closed it doesn't feel nice to use IMO.

- Front screen. I... don't like it. I find it hard to use and I have small hands for a guy. Anyone with big hands is going to struggle with this front screen unless they use the swipe typing. Which I absolutely hate. I think it's a dreadful input method, but people swear by it! It's just too narrow. It's fine for swiping through Spotify, scrolling Twitter or using the calculator / clock app etc. But it doesn't feel convenient to me. It needs to be convenient for the instances where you can't or don't want to open it fully. I feel like this must (and likely will) be addressed in V3.

- The fact is has 2 screens. So, a strange one this. But hear me out lol. It's great that there are two screens although one for me isn't very user friendly - but the phone in some instances makes you use it like two devices - and then in other instances, doesn't.
An example: Wallpaper setting. As has already been discussed in the thread - you can't set the same wallpaper across both the external and internal lock / home screens. The phone makes you treat them separately. Same with apps. You put an app on your front screen on the outer display, it doesn't mirror it inside. That's fine for me as I want different apps over both. But there's no choice.

However, for keyboards, I use the Samsung split keyboard when unfolded. It works great and I am getting quicker and quicker with it every time I use it.
But for the outer display, I love SwiftKey. Not for swipe typing, but I make nowhere near as many mistakes using that one over the Samsung one - strangely. But I have to swap between them if I reply to a message on the outer display and then an hour later open the phone to say, do a Google search as the phone remembers which one you used on the outer display and sets it.
So... it can remember that and set that but it can't set a wallpaper across them all... again, odd.

It's these little things that make the day to day usage a bit... cumbersome? Annoying? I mean, its no problem if you use the same keyboard across both, but I don't.

- Camera. It's a positive too - but there's also some issues. Selfies (which I very very rarely take) - are just filled with garbage beauty options. Why? Just give it a damn rest, Samsung. Seriously. I know you can turn them off, but it still applies something I am convinced of it.
It's also a little bit poor in lower light. Detail goes totally out of the window and a moving object (dogs lol) are a blurry mess. For the price, it needs to be better. I will also not take "people are not buying this for the camera" argument either. BS. It doesn't matter if they are or not. Put your best camera in it for a device at this price point.

View attachment 959269

- Power button. Why does this activate Bixby. This could be an option I can turn off but I haven't managed to find it if it is there. Bixby needs to be killed off now - it has more than out stayed its welcome. :D.
Trying to restart the phone by holding the 'power' key and getting her voice is just annoying.

I think that's kind of everything (so far) that I have had some thoughts on.
Sorry for the long post, but didn't want to just post a sentence and upset some of the delicate readers of the forum. Lol.

In regards to the 'keep or sell' thing. Well. I don't know. Like I said at the start, I still don't know how I feel about this phone. Not properly anyway.
More time is definitely needed.

Good stuff, I pretty much agree with it all. Inner screen is amazing, outer screen can be a hassle due to how narrow it is. FYI in settings you can change the power button from bixby to off, or to any other app such as Google assistant. I've been using bixby and it's not terrible, although I'm coming from Siri so it's not a high bar.

I'm definitely keeping mine, no question about it. Really the only major sacrifice is every single friend/family member is on Apple as well as my kids so it's a huge pita trying to figure out what to do with facetime, checking my kids screen time, etc, IMO this is a handicap although not Samsung's fault.

Would you mind telling me how to do this? I looked on my Note but couldn't find anything. Death to Bixby.
Go to setting and type Bixby in the search icon. It will take you to this screen

The fold 2 has certainly made me sold on foldables. It's got all the areas I want in a phone..

I barely used my note ultra today..

Fingerprint Sensor ........ I think it works Flawless. But the placement could be better when closed. When closed, I usually use my left index finger with my hand wrapped around the phone. The problem is you have to train yourself to place your finger on the bottom bezel only. Placing your finger across both bezels, and you will have errors half the time. Unfortunately, that's the best placement for when the phone is unfolded.

Power Button ...... You can completely exclude Bixby from the button in Side Key settings. Mines is set to ....
Double Press -- Quick launch camera
Press and hold -- Power off menu
Or just use the software down power button from notification center.

Game Pass ..... I haven't used it with a controller yet. But I was on the road playing Mincraft Dungons game with the
on-screen controller and it was very fun and responsive.

That means it's probably got a Fedex number, assuming you are in the US. If so you can create a Fedex account with your shipping address and look up the tracking number which will tell you when it will be delivered.

I would have preferred the fp sensor on the back of the phone, would be a super easy reach when using one handed and two handed. Having been very happy with one handed use when folded, the only time I have to contort my hand is when I have to hit the fp sensor. When open you are going to hold it with 2 hands anyway so it shouldn't be an issue. As a power button I also hate the placement as it's way too recessed and I can't find it often, and often mistake it for the volume rocker or vice versa.

I'm pretty sure highly paid engineers know what will last and what won't..

Only way this display doesn't last is if its treated like crap. Foldables are the future and displays will only get better and better over time.
By saying “if it’s treated like crap” you’re insinuating the user’s done something stupid for the screen to have been damaged.

I don’t think it’s that simple - this device can be damaged easier than regular phones without the user knowing, for eg. pocket debris sneaking in between the screens/hinge.

By treating it the same way slab phones are treated, a Fold device has a higher chance of either its screen or hinge collecting potentially damaging materials, especially in camping/coastal/certain work environments - where the user may have less chances to clean their hands/clothing properly.

It’s not all office based, home-bound people who are going to try it out. It’s a mobile device & there will be those who want it to be as portable as a slab & will treat it similarly expecting nothing to go wrong, which may work for many, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t more hazardous scenarios for something to go wrong with this device.

Hey guys, is there any way to get the "desktop" mode where you can see such things as dual panes for email and tabs in the samsung browser, but without turning zoom off? My old eyes can't see without enabling zoom.

You can set to desktop mode and increase the font size.

Samsung stock email auto switches to dual panes in landscape mode and their new browser also has tabs now, also try adjusting font size :)

I think trying to force desktop mode is your problem

While in theory yes there is an extra risk the reality is it's very small and largely unfounded

We all lived with folding flip/folding phones for a decade before current crop of slab formats. I do not recall all this kerfuffle don't take it to the beach, be careful of this and that etc, the most common damage seem to be people dropping thier Razr's down the loo LOL

The same was noted on the Surface book because of it's hinge design again your more likely to get reports of screen damage on Mac's because of close tolerance fits than because the surface book has a gap

This concern to me is largely driven by fear because of the value/cost of the product and not actual real risk.

Pros

Wow awesome write up! Also must say very cute pupper!! What breed if I may ask?

In regards to the cover screen I discovered this last night (photo attached) apparently you have to turn on every app to continue on the cover display.

This phone is very nice hardware wise I'll give Samsung that. But it just feels like Samsung doesn't think things through. The wallpaper thing for one and another scenario that I came upon was turning off auto-rotate for the cover display but keeping it on for the inner display.

Still annoyed with Samsung's choice of using Aluminum for a $2000 phone. Yes I know it's lighter than Steel but I mean come on for $2000 there's got to be a more premium and lighter metal.

I know the flashy hardware is really nice but in my opinion it comes down to the software and Android is so annoying to me haha.

I was thinking about doing an in depth comparison video of the setup process, app comparison between this, the iPhone and the iPad as well as different little nuance between the two devices. I've never seen a YouTuber actually do such a video just getting down to the nitty gritty.

I also got a galaxy watch 3 to check out as I had never used one. Did not like it at all. Can't hold a candle to the Apple Watch. Again the hardware is really nice but I actually prefer the digital crown and the software is so much better on the Apple watch and the watch faces on the apple watch stomp on the galaxy watch faces. They're truly trash haha. For my tastes the Samsung faces are just way too busy.

if it Android that is annoying to you, how did you ever expect to like and keep the device or any that aren’t apple out of interest?

Idk just like checking out new things and I guess trying to force android to do certain things I thought it would be able to do but can't. I just get the new shiny thing itch and maybe the grass is greener lol. Maybe when I can afford to have two devices one day I'll have an iPhone and and Android device.

I think your mixing up options that are given typically on Android opposed to like it or lump it on IOS

While at 1st glance it would seem obvious to just have one setting for inner and outer wallpapers given many custom wallpapers subject matter maybe biased to one side as an example. While perfectly fine on the inner screen, the narrow front screen would be a disaster Samsung allows you to adjust zoom/in/out and to slide around your wallpaper to get it perfect on both screens. I guess for simple wallpapers they could of given a toggle use on both, but options are good.

Samsung provide an app in goodlock for auto setting all apps to continue on cover display for those who do not want options and yet for those that do, they are also catered for. Very handy at times :)

Strangely the auto rotate seems not to be separate options, but no doubt will be soon

Of course their are more premium lighter materials like the Magnesium alloy used on MS Surface devices but unfortunately they are much harder to have colour finishes. That's why many do not use them and don't forget the stainless steel band on IPhones is more to avoid bendgate than finish

Watchfaces far to subjective

Samsung stock email auto switches to dual panes in landscape mode and their new browser also has tabs now, also try adjusting font size :)

I think trying to force desktop mode is your problem

You can set to desktop mode and increase the font size.

I tried playing with the fonts, but that really only affects system fonts so many apps/web pages still have tiny text.

I was a diehard AW user, that was one of my biggest concerns moving back to Android. I actually find the GW3 to be on par with the AW in everything I've thrown at it. The watch faces I find much nicer on the GW3, they are MUCH more detailed for one (almost too detailed). I do still prefer a rectangle watch face though, it just fits content better. But so far overall I have no complaints on my GW3.

Apple watch is great but in reality the galaxy watch does basically all the same things. Even health features galaxy watch has ECG, fall defection and blood oxygen. Watch faces is one area galaxy watch is well ahead but most areas now its similar

Apple watch has basically stayed the same past 3 years. There's basically small differences from series 4 to 6. While galaxy watch has made great steps forward. All depends if you prefer round or not

You buy what you prefer at the end of the day but in terms of use ability there is no difference between the two now

Same with software android isn't for everyone and neither is ios. That's the beauty of choice. Ios software is great in some areas but frustrating in others.

All depends if you like making your phone how you want if you don't then ios will do a perfect job for overall consistency

I think it depends, I've never damaged my phones screen since owning smart phones

Most who damage screens is a freak accident for others people might just be very clumsy

People can damage their phones at all point but for me this is always going to be user error. Not like anybody means to damage their phones.

I don't think you need to baby the fold just treat it carefully. Just my opinion though.

I just had a fiddle, see if this helps

My normal browser mode
Screenshot_20200926-190924_Samsung Internet.jpg

After changing settings and using fonts by 2 steps the layout changes:

Screenshot_20200926-190731_Samsung Internet.jpg

This settings and you can also increase font sizes more in the other settings page

Hope this helps :)
