Using a Samsung XP941 256gb SSD on a Lyncom DT120 adapter. Working fine and bootable. Fast Boot up time at 19 secs starting from the chime sound. The icon of the SSD appears as an orange external HD on the desktop. Apps open noticeably faster and snappier. Using Mountain Lion 10.8.3.

Hi m4v3r1ck. Thanks for the tips and Happy Easter too. :D Your desktop is neat and cool. No clutter. I read an article before, can't recall the link, that too much files on the desktop can slow down the computer.

Not in the same league with people that don't like to use folders! and use their desktop as their ONLY storage place. Poor Finder had enough trouble before it got beyond single-threadedness.

Dumping 1,000's of files or more, clogs the darn drain

TotalFinder & Folders on Dock

I use TotalFinder THE ultra modern Mac edition of "Total Commander"

This is e.g the [cmd]+ setting for a second window to easily do some file maintenance. Easy short keys [ALT]+[`] shows and hides the finder to the dock. Very happy to use it, makes my workflow a bit faster moving/copying/deleting etc files.

I do use Folders on my desktop but I have them attached to the (autohide) Dock:

And yes I don't like clutter on my Desktop, as it distracts me too much and strains my eyes as a near-sighted old man :D

Sorry for the somewhat of-topic infos!

Cheers

Wow, I get a cMP4,1 for under $500, and you guys make me spend all that money on these incredible upgrades. Not sure if this was covered yet, but can these be used to roll your own Fusion Drive in combination with a regular SATA HDD?

Thanks all, really appreciate all the information in these threads!

I've found this gem in my research over at cyclone and have reached out to them for details. This board should be able to deliver 4 x4 slots at full speed in the cMP. Now, if they only had a version with 4 M2/NGFF slots!:eek::eek:

Yep.. It should be possible. With Quad Core 3.46 CPU's are available on eBay for near $200 and PCIe SSD's at a reasonable price, It doesn't take too much $$$ for the cMP to catch up to it's nMP sibling. A definite great buy at $500.

Good luck!

startup chime gone with Sintech v2 adapter

I have had my Sintech v2 adapter with my SSBUX SSD installed for around a week now. I have noticed that my Mac Pro startup chime is no longer active.

If I reset the PRAM the startup chime comes back but as soon as I set the SSBUX drive as the boot drive the startup chime is gone on the next boot. It doesn't seem like there is any inherent problem beyond this but it does seem strange that the chime is consistently deactivated.

I am curious has anyone else experienced this same behavior as well?

What model MP do you have?

As Promised!

Hello everybody!

This is an update about my 1TB SSUAX as I promised before in my original post. I just received it this afternoon but I won't be able to try it until I receive the Sintech card. As you people know, the Sintech card comes from China an I was told I'll receive it sometime between April 15 and April 25. The picture isn't too clear but it's the Model MZ-KPU1T0T/0A6.

What model MP do you have?

It is a Mac Pro 4,1 flashed to 5,1

I currently have the following cards in the slots:

1. Sapphire AMD Radeon 7950
2. Caldigit FASTA-65U3Pro
3. Sonnet Tempo Pro
4. Sintech v2 with SSBUX

Since I can not run the Sintech adapter in slot 2 @ 5.0 GT/s I am forced into having the Sonnet Tempo Pro and Sintech adapter share bandwidth in slot 3 and 4. I just can't bring myself to install the Sonnet card in slot 2 and block all available airflow to the video card.

I have pulled the Sonnet card to see if that has any effect but it does not. I might try pulling the Caldigit card and see what happens with that.

Yeah, I would pull the Caldigit next just to see. Do you have the Caldigit kext for the increased power output installed? If yes, disable that too.

I actually had this happen on my system back on 10.5. I never did find the exact cause and ended up reinstalling everything (OS/Apps/PCIe cards) from bare metal.

That fixed it without ever knowing the cause.

So, what do you believe would be the most effective use of Cyclone 4 x4 slots at full speed in the cMP?

I have a SSUBX, I am willing to part ways with for $750. I can get more of them pretty easily, I can't tell the difference between the two in real world performance, other than when they are benchmarked.

My SSUBX gets a consistent 1,430 MB/s write and 1,475 MB/s read
My SSUAX gets a consistent 1,000 MB/s write and 880 MB/s read

I am thinking that would not be a bad deal at this time.

The last riser came in at $750 + 2 weeks time to build it so it's not cost effective. The next target identified is a riser that splits once pie channel into multiple devices with bifurcated connections. Whether or not the cMP supports this approach is a crap shoot.

Beyond being cost effective, this board is the right size to be placed on top of the CPU cage, next to the GPU, allowing enough room to close the door.
