im new to JB... and i dont even know what "blob" means. Can anyone tell me what to do to get ready for this JB?

All you need to know about the blob is that the file is essential in order to restore if Apple releases a 6.1.1 , basically. Just get it, you can sort out the rest when the time has come. It's not even confirmed that it will be needed but do it just in case.

Ok I have updated with iTunes then use tinyumbrela to save the shsh files. Is that all I need to do? I did this on my iphone 5 and ipad 2.
TintUmbrella said TinyUmbrellas TSS server is not running.
I unchecked the redsnow thing.

It feels really good to see a JB arrive. I just paid for another month of data on my IP2 on ATT. But they have up to 14 days to prorate and refund the unused portion. Guess what I'll be doing on 5 Feb after I verify tetherme?? Yessss!!

Just saved my 6.1 blob. Glad to see jailbreak back on the scene.

Unfortunately I'm on 5.1.1 w.o blobs but I have no reason to jailbreak so upgrading might just be the way to go at this point.

It is possible to upgrade and restore with all my info (apps, music, contacts)?

Just wanted to make sure.

Backing up my phone as I type.

jailbreaking doesnt mean it'll delete the data that you currently have on your phone right? Just making sure. I have tons of games and i dont want to lose any, same with pictures and notes

Everything will stay intact. You'll just have a shiny new Cydia icon on your springboard.

Still, you should always backup before performing a jailbreak.

If you restore while jailbroken you will lose your jailbreak.

So I am one of the avalanche of noobs and here is my question: Do I have to restore my iphone 5 prior to installing ios 6.1 via itunes?
Thank you.

The JB will be for 6.0 6.0.1 6.0.2 and 6.1
You dont have to restore but its advised to go up to 6.1 using itunes instead of an OTA delta update from within the phone.
This way if you need to in the future you might be able to use your shsh blobs to restore to the same firmware without updating to a firmware version that's not jailbreakable.

Plug it into iTunes and hit restore

I am downloading 6.1 now in this moment. I hit Download only, not Download and Install. But, do I have to previously restore my iphone 5? Or can I just Install without hitting restore?
Thank you.

Each device blob file that is saved is different and specific for that specific phone or iOS device, so save as many blobs for as many devices you want on the same computer.

Is there a way to match the blob to the phone? In other words, how can I tell which blobs are for my phone and which ones are for the other phone for which I have saved blobs?

It might, it might not have the time in case apple stops signing 6.1 fast.
There's millions of idevices on Cydias que so best bet is to do it yourself. It only takes a minute or 2 and you get piece of mind.
Are you in good hands?:)

Well just having to update to 6.1 and un-jailbreak is a bit of a pain for now, otherwise yeah it should be quick.

You dont need to update to 6.1 and unJailbreak in order to save your blobs.
All you need to do is download the latest tinyumbrella and plug in your 5.0.1 4S for example and it will save its 6.1 blobs even though you havent updated to that yet;)

There should be named/numbered with the ECID number of each iphone but you dont have to worry about that now.
When and if the time comes the particular program will pull them for you directly from cydias server remotelly or by the particular directory.

You can install it by hitting restore or by hitting upgrade.

But what if i dont want to do a factory restore and loose everything, do i better hit upgrade?

what does this mean?
i just got a new phone from apple and tried restoring it and it would tell me not eligible for requested build. so i cant restore my brand new phone. and was on the phone with them over 30 minutes and they couldnt figure out why i couldn't update and restore my phone.

Not sure, it could be something blocking communication to apples server.
Try restoring it on another computer if you can.

just have this computer never had issues like this.
at first i set up the phone as new the build was 6.0.2 and i was trying to update it on my mac. it wouldnt work with doing everything she said. i tried updating it over the air for 6.1 and that worked. After i tried restoring and it was giving me the same problem saying not eligible for requested build.
i erased everything from the settings tab and loaded my previous sync on and that worked fine. After that was done it still wont restore.
should i of not updated it over the air?

Turn off TSS server inside TinyUmbrella and/or make sure in the advance tab that “Set Hosts to Cydia on Exit" is NOT checked.
