I've owned all 3 iPhones and still possess them all. Even the original has no scratches on the glass. My current 3GS gets tossed into a bag, into a pocket with coins, into a camera bag... it gets knocked around quite a bit like any normal phone would. No scratches.

I've even had salesmen at various stores tell me what good shape it's in - and they are SHOCKED when I tell them I've never used a screen protector.

I hate them. I won't use them.

If I end up with a scratch on my iPad screen I guess I'll have to deal with it... but honestly, the screen protectors just change how the surface feels and have their own downsides. I'd rather go iNaked.

I think people have very different definitions of what scratches are. For instance, I can go into an Apple Store and, invariably, find scratches on the screens of all their demo products without fail. Sometimes you need to tilt them just right, or turn them off, but they are there. Most people can't find them but when I point them out they do, in fact see them.

Now, do they affect function as demo objects, as abused as they are? No.

Then again, I'm the guy that used to walk up to people's monitors and say "Dude, how can you stand that, it's flickering" when they set their monitors to 60Hz... mine were all set to 85Hz and I could see the 60Hz cycling with my eyes.

Exactly. I'm looking for a FLAWLESS crystal clear surface.

Are you also one of those who complains about yellowing, bleeding, and dead pixels? Seems like a lot of people seek out these flaws and scratches can be added to that list. I have a hunch these are the same people that called Apple about their iPad orders worried that there was a problem and/or called their credit card companies because authorization charges would appear and then fall off. It's a mindset I've never encountered until I came to this forum. I am fascinated by it, I must admit.

I've been using the Power Support Anti-glare screen protector, and I actually prefer the feeling over the glass. My fingers stick less, and the surface just feels better. Very smooth, but in a good way. And fingerprints are almost nonexistent on it.

No offense but you have to be a complete and total idiot to not buy a screen protector for your iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad.

I would counter that you have to be a complete idiot to scratch your iPad. The only way I could see it happening would be to clean it with a cloth that has sand on it. Or clean with sandpaper. ;)

I'm being careful with mine, however the apple store person said it's "almost impossible to scratch it" and said it's the same glass as the iphone. He then took his iphone out of his pocket without any protection and rubbed his car key on it for about 15 strokes, pushing down quite hard and then handing it to me to take a look.

BTW - There's no screen protectors in stock at the michigan apple stores. They're not sure when they'll start to have them. I ordered a power support one on monday, upgrading shipping to get it a little faster...and it just shipped..4 days later, so I'm guessing they're getting hammer pretty good.

I am a geologist that works with aircraft to do remote sensing all over the world. If I'm not in the field, I'm at home. In the last year, I had my iPhone in the desert of Qatar, the mountains of Ecuador and to top it off, two months in the jungle in Borneo. My iPhone goes everywhere with me, no scratches, no cover. I took my pad in my 61 year old warbird for a trip down to Tucson this weekend. Its really, really slow, so I have a lot of free time to check out the 3g capabilities of the pad along the way. It got tossed about the cockpit, propped up here and there when I actually had to fly. It got no scratches.

My 3Gs iPhone had a good ride with me taking a spill on my mountain bike today at lunch. No scratches but I wish I could say that for my knees and the big lump on my @ss. These things are tough and function as tools for me. I treat them well, but I don't act like they are eggshells.

I'm going off to Kota Kinabalu next month, so the iPad will just get slipped in my Domke Lens wraps. They are cheap and funky. So far all the cases and covers are un-inspired and over priced. I'm not from Queens, so no slipcovers for me.

Yeah and what's with all this talk about sand scratching? I've dropped my iPhone in the sand so many times at the beach, and have cleaned the screen multiple times with my bikini when it had some sand on it, no scratches.

Maybe the only thing that can scratch a screen is incessant worrying over scratched screens? ;p

People on this forum really need to lighten up a bit.

I'm living proof that the iPad can scratch even if you do take good care of it. I've had the original iPhone and the 3G and never had a problem with scratching (i did manage to scratch the original a little but that was completely my fault).

Does apple really claim that it can't be scratched? If I brought mine in would they replace it?

If you don't know HOW it got scratched, you didn't take good care of it IMO.

We already have the solution...

Unfortuantely, with that comes the inevitable flood of threads about a scratched screen and can I trick Apple into covering it under warranty if I tell them X?

Just charge and drain it enough times to have to have the battery replaced - we already know you'll get a brand new iPad when that time comes ;)

Seriously scratches depend on your environment. Anyone who works around machine shops with grinding wheels are at risk, sand could have sharp enough edges. Those with sugar partners that have given them lots of diamonds on their fingers, also at risk.

But us in normal urban environments? I've broken screens but never scratched them.

I had the Ghost Armor on my iPad screen but in bright light you could see the faint orange peel texture and so I took it off. Love it on the back - makes it far less slick and droppable, but not on the front.

I treat my iPad n touch as my children. I had the invisible shield on my cell phone and my touch. I regret it since day 1. According to apple if u scratch the iPad u must really of scratched it hard. I walked into a apple store about to buy a screen protector. All apple employess said u don't need 1

No offense but you have to be a complete and total idiot to not buy a screen protector for your iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad.

I have owned an iPhone since February 2008, got the 3GS in June 2009, and I've owned an iPad since it's launch day. I have never used a screen protector. Ever.

I have zero scratches on my screens.

Maybe you need to rethink the way that you project your thoughts......

I don't use protective screens, since last time I did, the "protective film" had so many scratches, I couldn't hardly see the screen. Just be careful, I've seen plenty of MBP's scratched all to heck, even an iMac (new one) scratched up, and I've never scratched one of mine, even after moving.

How the heck do people do it? I've never scratched anything, that didn't demand immediate attention to. I've drop kicked my iTouch plenty of times, and scratches were the least of my concern, amazingly that's all it suffered. If you drop kick your iPad, expect scratches.

I'm guessing people are dragging their iPad across metal zippers or across other course objects inside of bags or something. "Oh my! I didn't think that chainsaw would scratch my iPad..." Just be mindful of what your iPad comes into contact with. Enjoy it the way it is.

So from the start I was under the impression that my iPad's screen was pretty much scratch proof. Despite that I've been extremely careful with it, the back is protected by a hard case and if I take it anywhere I put it in its sleeve. I've never once dropped it or dropped anything on it, but today I noticed 3 or 4 scratches on the screen, one of them being pretty noticeable :( Needless to say I'll be buying a screen protector shortly. I know there have been a few other threads about similar stories but this is just a reminder, YOUR IPAD IS NOT SCRATCH PROOF!

On a related note, will a screen protector help cover up already existing scratches or make them more obvious?

FYI, NOTHING YOUR OWN is SCRATCH PROOF
Please go back to live in your bubble.

Nope, screen protector makes the screen unresponsive.

it depends on how you use your iPad
if it sits on the sofa all day (and you don't have pets, kids, or a clumsy bird) then its less likely to get scratched

I really have to laugh at people on this thread -so ****ing deluded, its quite astonishing!

So, the general conversation goes like this....

Poster1: I scratched my iProduct.. just wanted to warn everyone that it CAN happen. You know. So it doesn't happen to you.

Poster2: WOW. You must be CRAAAAAZY. I have launched my iProduct into space and back. Nothing. No scratches. Impossible. Either you don't have a clue and your eyes aren't working, or you are imagining the scratches. But I can tell you categorically that iProducts DON'T SCRATCH. Now please don't say anything like that ever again.

It seems johnny, that you've gone fanboy bashing tonight ;):apple:

I am extremely careful with all my Apple devices.

My iPhone 3GS is the only iPhone-based device that has ever gotten scratches on the glass. They are small and barely visible, but they are there.

I don't expect any on my iPad, and just for a note my iPhone and iPhone 3G never showed signs of scratching.

Screen protectors are nice, but I feel they usually look "odd," even if perfectly applied, and they don't offer the same coefficient of friction.

Does glass have a better coefficient of friction compared to other screen materials or is this an opinion based comment?

I am pretty sure it's a fact. Steve himself talked about how hard Apple worked on obtaining the proper coefficient of friction on the iPhone's glass. And my Magic Mouse, being plastic, has no where near an adequate responsiveness.

A link to some coefficient of friction data, and screen protectors aren't glass, so it must be different...
