An endless pit of despair

A rabbit hole sounds rather compelling by comparison :p
I think next year if I do upgrade. I’ll wait for feedback by real users before taking the plunge. Not because I believe Apple will revise and improve their batches. That never happens. Just for my own reasons so I can make a sound purchase decision.

Greetings all

I've just set up my new 16 Pro as a copy of my iPhone X and also noticed a noticeable difference in brightness and colour temperature. Just for fun I recorded this video in a darkish room (lit only by a window).

It's tricky set the same brightness level on the scale in Settings-Display so I chose the control centre one. I have always had my X (on the right) at just below where the "sun goes one step brighter", if that makes sense. I have tried in the video to show the respective phone's brightness at that point on the scale.

It's tricky to show this in a video because the camera will try to adjust the exposure. But to me the difference is evident. Highlights on the X to the right "scream" or burn out much more than on the 16 to the left.

But it makes sense to me that the brightness would not be the same on two different models with different types of displays. The 16 Pro can get much brighter which rationally means that on the scale the displays' brightness won't match at the same point on the scale.

DxO notes in its test that
Compared to previous models and competitors, the brightness levels were lower, which can negatively impact the viewing experience for web content, photos, and videos. In these situations, contrasts appeared flat, and colors seemed washed out, despite a color saturation boost. Users might want to adjust manually the brightness level to improve the rendering according to their preferences.

Still, it is really strange that in order to have a similar brightness the 16 Pro would need to be at 40-45% compared to a much older screen and I am wondering if this really was Apple's intention.

Has there been any acknowledgement by Apple about this? I have to admit that I have not read through all 28 pages of this thread but I see nothing about this on the interwebs .

The colour temp is also rather different. The X is much whiter and crisper than the 16 which looks fairly dull in comparison. It's not possible afaik to adjust this in iOS. For instance, the Night Shift setting will at its left-most point ("Less warm") be at the display's default with Night Shift turned off.

cheers

@pullman Brightness level works different in 16P/PM series than it used to work in previous generations because of the new M14 panels which are able to go down to as low as 1-nit - therefore one needs to crank the brightness ~10% upper to have the same effective brightness levels as on previous devices.

Ah I see, that makes sense to me. Thanks for explaining it. I actually don't mind a slightly dimmer screen indoors because it's easier on the eyes.

Funny ... you can even see the green tinting at the bottom right corner of the leaked S25+ (M13 panel)

I got tired buying 1 PM only to return and hope for a better and rinse and repeat. Just bought 12 16 PM in one go. 8 were LGs ALL had some level of off axis green tilt. 3 G9N and 1 G9P, the 4 Samsungs were all much better with no off axis tilt. 1 G9N AND 1 G9P had slight uniformity issues but nothing major, would’ve taken it if I got it on one of my other first attempts. 2 G9Ns were perfect, one “seemed” a tad brighter so went with that. Just got back from returning the other 11. Apple doesn’t care about excessive returns.

Interestingly, the LGs were all cooler, and the Samsungs warmer (yellower) which is opposite of what I’m used to.
The GVC LGs were better than the GHC in terms of off axis tilt green hue.

Went with 3x 16 PMs and got 3 GHC :D I chose the best one but still with a green tint. Had no money for 10x PMs :(
But I bought a damage protection plan and use my phone no case, no nothing and will do everything to destroy the screen as fast as possible, and replace it hoping for getting a Samsung one.I think your approach is very clever and solves the problem with ordering/returning and ordering again which takes years to get a new phone.

PS. One thing is crazy to me, and I must say I stopped using yt to gather any information regarding digital devices. Like I watched many reviews, those just from the premier and those 30days after and noone mentions that ****@#%g crazy green tint. Which is abulutely crazy considering how easy it is to spot and how much lower quality it is comparing to Samsung/not green one

Just curious. Are all the 12 16 PMs the same color and storage option?

By having the green tint you mean it's visible like in normal use when looking directly at the screen?

it is visible at the bottom of the screen after tilting your device, depends on your luck, the green tint is low or really strong and easily visible just at even a slight tilt
when you look directly at the screen it looks ok, but if you compare to a Samsung screen it is 10-20% darker at max brightness and overall much warmer (checked two different green tinted screens with phones on a store display with no tint) and there was no way to get to the same brightness level. And actually the lack of max brightness is much bigger problem but it is really hard to notice bc you need a SAmsung device to compare and that is crazy hard to get (you can go to an Apple Store but still at my store only 1 out of 7 phones had a nice screen)

overall in a direct comparison the gap between a green tinted screen and a screen with no green tint is crazy huge, like two different devices...but if you look jsut at the green tinted without comparison it looks just ok (don't want to name brands bc not sure if only LG has green tint)

It’s one of those once you see it you can’t unsee it. And I think the pro max’s use LG screens more than the regular Pros.

Can someone check the gray uniformity with this 5% grey picture?
With about 30-40% brightness I can see banding on my 16 Pro Max with G9N Display.
Can someone confirm this too?

My uniformity is good and I have no green shift but the banding with dark grey screens seems weird.

Please look to my attachments.

BTW this is not my phone it’s uploaded by a user from Reddit:

The banding disappears under 30% or over 50% brightness. It’s really weird.

You have to be in a complete dark room and then you can see it from 10-40%. You have to wait until your eyes get used to the 100% darkness.
I will say over 50% brightness I cannot see it anymore.

Interesting on DXO Display testing you can see also the banding line in the middle of the 16 Pro Max.

Yeah I did in 100% dark room. I tested few steps under 50% and mine is 100% uniform. No issue it seems. (Pro model btw)
