My 7 Plus Jet Black got a hideous scratch on the screen. Small, but still hideous. Oddly, there are no major scratches on the back which was supposed to be far more delicate. Like the OP, have no idea how it got there since it never went in a pocket with anything else but the lesson was tempered glass screen protector on day one of any new phone. Stuff happens so now I just try to be over protective. They're not impervious to damage.

I've had my iPhone for 6 days now, and it's been in a case the entire time. I just looked down at the screen and it already has a scratch on it. I'm baffled.
I've always had an iPhone, going back to the first one 10 years ago. I haven't dropped it, and it stays in my pocket alone. No keys, nothing else in that pocket. Yet it has a scratch on the screen already. How did this happen? I'm wondering if anyone else is finding their iPhone X screen being prone to scratches.

It's a glass screen, not titanium. Glass scratches. Especially if you have dust/sand/grain/rock in your pockets. I cleaned my phone once, with a micro fiber cloth. After I was done, a hairline scratch. How? Something fine was stuck in the cloth. It happens.

What I do know, it doesn't just scratch it self.

Screens don’t scratch by themselves.

I'm not saying that I don't know where scratches come from. Thanks for all the sarcastic comments. I'm merely pointing out that it seems odd that the phone's screen got scratched so easily, and I was wondering if there were others facing the same problem.

How do you know it was easily done when you don't know how it was scratched to begin with? You're implying that the glass on the X is easily scratched, yet you have no basis for such a correlation. You're assuming it is.

Glass scratches. If it really bothers you and you have AC+, you could try getting it replaced by claiming it has some other random problem. This works better if you do it via the Express Replacement plan, but they'll put a hold on your CC until you square away the phone and return the original.

That said, since it's new to you, I'd just deal with the scratch for awhile and then trade it later if it super annoyed me.

I always put a screen protector on my iphone as soon as I get it.
It doesnt matter if your previous phone scratched after 10 months and how this one got a scratch a week later.
Scratches can happen at any time, its a glass screen.

Not a lot of people reporting scratches or you would be seeing them here. Sounds like time was up for you and your phone and you finally got a scratch. It can happen after one or 100 days. It may "seem odd" but the scratch got there due to something. If not too deep a screen protector. If it really bothers you have Apple replace the screen.

Yeah, I guess I was just lucky for ten years. It was finally my time. I wouldn't be posting a thread if it weren't a brand new phone. My behavior hasn't changed, my usage hasn't changed. The only thing that has changed if the phone.

Your past behavior or usage has nothing to do if a tiny dirt/hard particle rubbed across the screen.
Its impossible to predict.

Wow! Tough crowd around here.

Isn't it possible that the iPhone X screen is more easily scratched than previous iPhones?

Brennan, you have my sympathy not my cynicism.

It's not impossible. It is unlikely, though.

I haven't used a screen protector since the iPhone 5. Mine will get occasional, tiny scratches. Especially if I wear diamond earrings.

They're so small, you can barely see them unless you hold it up to the light just right.

I worry not about them. I figure I'll use my AC+ at some point and the screen will be new eventually.

Sorry.

I have been lucky, too and not scratched any of my iPhone screens. I know it will happen one day, it can happen anytime.

That would be quite silly for them to advertise it in their keynote that is watched by millions as the strongest glass ever on a smartphone and then have it be more susceptible to scratches then previous iPhones.

How idiotic would that be on Apple's part? Apple. The company that's likely to be the first trillion dollar company in the world. You think they would make that mistake?

Are you married?
What kind of pants do you wear? (jeans, slacks, shorts)
How old are your pants?
Do you clean your phone? If so, with what?

I’m with you OP. I was watching YouTube this evening and noticed several light scratches on my X. I have been using iPhones the same way since 4s, never have I had scratches show up this fast and easy. Had my 6S almost two years, nothing like these...

It only takes a grain of sand, dirt etc to find its way into the right spot in your pocket & whilst you move, it'll rub up against the same spot on your screen & like sandpaper leave its mark.

Screen protectors are popular for a reason: One scratch & you're living with it (& regret) every day...

The iphone X screen is no better or worse than the last few iphones. As for what can scratch it, keys shouldn't dirt or sand can because its harder. The iphone screens will scratch with a Mohs hardness pick of 6 or above. Still wish they put sapphire screens in like they wanted to starting with the iphone 6.

Same here OP.

Micro scratches in one spot like I was talking on the phone with earings in.

I don’t wear earings.

Can only see if if I tilt it into the light on a dark screen, but it happened fast. Had little scratches show up after the phone is a year plus old, but never in less than a week.

Never used a screen protector on an iPhone. Hopefully it’s not cancerous - I hate screen protectors.

Thinking the oleophobic coating is more susceptible than previously.

It’s not too bad yet. Not bad enough to lose sleep over, but with this and all the other threads popping up about it, I don’t think it’s an issue all these other replies should scoff so quickly at.

[doublepost=1510595053][/doublepost]SAME for me--got my phone on Thursday, and by Sunday I noticed a scratch that I can feel. I just turned in my iPhone 6 that I had for over 3 years and there were NO scratches on it at all. I never have used a screen protector, just always a good phone case--and have a case on it now. I'm perplexed but VERY disappointed at the same time!

There are a few small scratches in the screen of my X as well and I cannot for the life of me figure out how they got there, specifically since I've been taking care to avoid the screen contacting anything. I've only put it in my jeans pocket a handful of times, but that must have been enough for pocket sand to scratch the screen.

I was bent up over it at first, but I've never used a screen protector and I don't plan to now, and the display is bound to be covered in small scratches by the time I'm ready for the next one next year, so I let it go, but I am bummed that it happened just 10 days into owning the phone.

Yes! This is exactly how I feel! I am still astonished that these phones are not more durable, out of the box. I hate having to spend 100-200 dollars more (in addition to the phone) just to protect it from everyday wear and tear.

I’ve had an iPhone since day one they’ve always had a very durable glass. I noticed this one has a softer material. I notice a big scratch on mine and I just bought it last night !

I’m pretty sure it’s going to be an issue!

yes on the right side
