I would look into one of the after-market cases that add the 3.5mm jack over using that terrible (IMO) adapter.
It's certainly an alternative idea, but, personally speaking, not being a big fan of cases it kind of makes that idea not as attractive (not that the somewhat pricier dongle is all that "attractive"). On top of that, the adapter also provides that ability to be used with other phones in the household if/when needed.

I understand the thing against cases, but for me... no comparison. A case trumps using an ugly adapter every time. And no danger of losing the adapter either.

Think about it.

There's certainly the aspect of potentially losing it or not having it when you might need it if you forgot to take it. The part about being able to use it with a couple of other phones when/if needed is probably what outweighs it a bit more in my particular case. Just mainly depends on personal needs/wants ultimately, as most things do.

I can see the desire to charge and listen to something, granted, you'll be stuck in one spot as your power cable needs to be plugged into an outlet.

Perhaps office workers at a desk job would be the majority of people with this desire?

With that being said, who actually does this and in what situation?

Here is why.
I travel all of the time and I use my Bose QC35ii for a majority of the day. I sleep with them on to cut the noise out of my noisy travel or my loud upstairs neibors when I’m home. I then listen to music during the day. I use the headset while editing photos and videos on my MacBook. Now keep in mind all of my Apple products don’t have a headphone jack. Which I was ok with until I realized the Bose QC35ii will not charge and connect via BT or use the ANC. I keep a high powered battery pack (2 of them) with me to charge my MacBook Pro with touchpad, my iPad Pro and my new iPhone XS Max. As you can see I use the battery pack for everything. It’s very frustrating that I’m here laying in bed trying to watch a movie on my Apple TV via my Bose, as to not disturb my lady, but I have to stop watching due to the fact that my headset just died and now I need to charge it. Now for comparison. I also own Astro a50 for my Xbox gaming. If I have had a long day of gaming and I need to charge. I simply grab a battery pack, plug it in to my headset with a 6’ cable, set the battery in my lap and charge my headset while I play. Therefore, I know it can be done! It’s very frustrating that both Bose and Sony 1000x (according to my google searches) cannot do this! Bose knee people were asking for it in their first irritation of the QC35 and they did nothing to fix this. I’m going to copy paste this response to Bose as well. Maybe my solution would be to go with the beats, considering I own all Apple products anyways.

In conclusion. Yes it is something I would change brands for entirely and would love the ability to do so.

I'll gloss over the fact that you revived a thread from 1.5 years ago and agree with you.

When I stop charging my phone, it's time to charge my earbuds, and then you need to charge the phone again. it's a never ending cycle. Sort of getting out of the restroom and drinking a gallon of water. You go straight back in.

Occasionally if im charging on my desk at work and im listening to some music during a rare quiet period. I use AirPods so not an issue to me but even if I used lightning earphones I really don't think it would bother me that I had to do one or the other.

I do it frequently. I’m not tied to one spot because I use an external battery pack during these instances.

The difference for me now is that I use AirPods. However, that’s an expensive solution just for simultaneous charging and listening.

Just about every day, in my work vehicle - via a Belkin Rockstar adaptor which has a Headphone/Lightning jack to Lightning jack plug.

Ever since I got airpods, I almost always have my phone on a wireless charging stand while watching Youtube Videos or listening to music. :p

I have mine on the charger when I listen to music. I know the majority love wired headphones, but I love my Airpods. I can pop them in start music and go anywhere in my house without carrying the phone around. Just can't do that with wired headphones.

No. I'm using the adapters headphone socket (auxiliary) whilst charging the phone at the same time.
I did that until recently with my 6S but now have to accept without buying a new cable, I can no longer charge my phone and use AUX in the car lol. I was quite vocal on here when the headphone jack disappeared two years ago and now I’m finally in a position where the true inconvenience of it is all too apparent. It’s a good job the 8+ has an awesome battery really.

I also do this regularly in my car. 3.5 line out while charging.

Lol. I use headphones three times a day.

Yeah, at home it's speakers, away it's in the car and I don't take that many calls during work

I have this one: https://www.amazon.com/Mpow-Bluetooth-Transmitter-Headphones-Hands-free/dp/B01KXIKCSI/

It lasts 12 hours, but that's the receiver / transmitter You could buy the receiver model and use it for a solid 15+ hours.

Works great, no issues, even use it with my dell laptop and works perfect for video, no latency. Good range too. Probably 100 feet

It’s no longer a problem with the 8 series which has wireless charging. The 7 is the phone where customers really lost out as they only have one port. In fact most of my complaints about removing the headphone jack were addressed with the iPhone 8.

I’m looking for every way possible to make my experience in the car more convenient. Not having to plug a charger and an audio cable into my phone is one such improvement. Even with a headphone jack I sought to make getting in and out of my car more convenient. So I bought a $20 BT dongle that my iPhone automatically connected to when I started my car. Now that you can buy a wireless charging pad for the car, the Lightning port is completely unecessary while driving.

There is definitely lag with those. You want to make sure you get both a transmitter and receiver that support Aptx LL. I have a matched Trond pair, which I use for transmitting audio from my TV headphone jack to my headphones, and subwoofer. Sync is tight. I tried the MPOW but they didn’t have a aptx LL receiver unit and sync was hit or miss at best.

I was only really commenting from my own experience without investing in a wireless charger for the car etc. I have the two cables there ready to use and a 3.5mm jack port straight into the car so I just have to accept i’ll have to invest in a workaround. My everyday commute car is rather old so Bluetooth would be a luxury lol.

Fair enough. In my experience I own the mpow and have ZERO lag, and it was something I was nervous about, also I'm picky about this so I'd be sending them back if they were bad.

My Dell XPS has bluetooth 4.1 so it's why I have no problems. The mpow's battery life and range is incredible enough on top of the already crazy low price.

No complaints at all.

The times when I’d like to do this are when I’m in bed at night and my phone might need charging at that point. I don’t like using my AirPods in bed in case I fall asleep with them in and they fall out, get lost or my toddler ends up with one in his mouth.

I have had an iPhone without a headphone jack for about 1 year now and it sucks.
Can’t even charge and make aprons call/listen to music via headphones unless I use my AirPods but those don’t sound too good for the other person on the phonecall...

You bought the iPhone 7, huh? Too bad you didn’t wait until the 8, then you could charge and use headphones with a wireless charging pad. Apple really screwed a lot of people with that move.
