I've wanted to use headphones with a low battery at times so charging while listening has happened a couple times.

I like having the option as a backup, even if I've rarely done it. But I have, and I am not going to give that away.

I don't want to deal with adapters just for a phone, and I especially do not want to deal with the inconvenience of losing the adapter and having no portable music source without taking time out of my life to pick up another adapter. I also listen to music at the desktop, while charging my phone, so the hassle of unplugging the adapter from both ends sounds like a gradual pain.

And there is really no good excuse not to keep it around, not even for internal space reasons. And I especially do not support the idea that the removal is basically to just drive Lighting sales, and not for any beneficial reason.

ha. yeah, keyword: used to. I especially hate when I'm on a long distance phone call and have to hang up to charge. I just hate holding my phone up to my ear for phone calls.

I have one is these coming...

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01LX0ZHTQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_DBxwybM0K3KZS

there are other sellers selling the same one (different name) for double the price but with even better ratings/reviews. the Belkin is a beast.

would be cool if there was a minimal case with a built-in adapter. at least for the smaller 7.

This one doesn't work with a mic. I can't find one that works for phone calls + charging

The only time I charge my iOS devices is just before I go to bed. I can't use the devices in my sleep, so I may as well charge them.

I just bought a fuze battery case that has a 3.5mm jack and a lightening connector as I use my 7 in my car at work so do enough that I wanted to be able to charge and listen to music at the same. However now that it will be a battery case as well I guess it may negate that.

Does that jack allow headphone commands (like volume and other commands) to go through it?

I think so. I will get mine Wednesday in the mail and I can let you know. Check out there website as it has all their specifications. I ordered it at 1am and it shipped out that same morning with free shipping. I have high hopes for it. I like blue tooth headphones but they do run out of power so I always like having a pair of old style headphones as well. I am just surprised there are not more of these cases out in the wild that can give those of us that like the 3.5mm jack and want that ability to listen to plugged in music/charging.

I use my BT headphones, when charging at home. When I'm in the car, my car's stereo has a USB connection that lets me listen to music through the stereo while charging, and BT hands free is built in to my car for calls.

So while technically yes, I charge and listen at the same time all the time, but not via a headphone jack (and really haven't since like the iPhone 5).

I don't, but in long car journeys my phone is plugged in the the 12v charging and a cable is linked from the headphone jack to the aux port in my car so I can listen to music. The stupid little adapter doesn't cut it in that instance I'm afraid.

It seems we are now looking for ways around a problem that wasn't previously there.

I do most of the time on my 6s+ but will be buying the 7+ as soon as I get the fuze battery case with integrated audio jack.

I have this habit of listening to podcasts at night and often fall asleep in the process. So it helped alot to have the phone charging while I listen with the earpods and wake up to fully charged iPhone. Now I use a wireless earphone while I keep the phone charging on the side table.

I used to a lot, and I've found myself once or twice thinking I'd like to, but generally no. The way the iPhone 7 battery is now I can get through the whole day at the office without needing to plug the phone in so I'm fine.

If you'd asked me a couple of iPhones ago...

I don't but that's really only because I've got a completely separate Android for my media. It's got a removable battery.

I find that I did it at odd but specific times. I have some cheap RadioShack speakers in kitchen and I have found that more then a few times I wanted to charge while using the speakers. I think it's the specific occasion no one thinks about that this becomes a problem.

Yes I bought the Belkin for $40 in an airport audio shop. It doesn't support any other peripherals, only charging on one side then audio on the other. I have AirPods on order.
After trying a cheaper (non-certified) adapter that provides a lightning port and a regular 3.5mm jack and finding out that it will only let media audio through and won't work for calls, Siri, or any headphone controls or microphone, I decided to get the only adapter that seems like it would actually support everything as it should be--the Belkin one.

Having only briefly tested it out after getting it today it seems like it does what it should: you can charge the phone and have headphones connected that could be used for media playback, calls, Siri, etc., with headphone controls and microphone supported. You still need to use an Apple 3.5mm to lightning adapter if you want to use any non-lighting headphones, but at least it works for all scenarios as far as use of headphones and ability to charge at the same time goes.

We'll see how it holds up over time. It's certainly a bit on the pricier side just to get back the basic functionality that essentially all previous iPhones have offered (realistically Apple should have had one of their own and for like around $20), but I guess that's the way it is, at least so far.

I would look into one of the after-market cases that add the 3.5mm jack over using that terrible (IMO) adapter.

So inelegant.
