So far it looks like you would get better results with just a bit of Photoshop skills.
But this is much easier and faster. Most people will probably be happy with this.

For me it's still just a gimmick

Try this picture below with "a bit of Photoshop skills".

When you manage to get it right, it's absolutely magical

Coming from someone who shoots primarily on a Sony A7 with a multitude of fast Zeiss prime glass, I have to say i'm really quite impressed with the Portrait effect on the 7+. Here's a quick snap I took earlier on (the fall off from the in-focus area and "bokeh" seems quite natural):

Agree. People who aren't impressed trying to be critical too hard. Even pro photographer will be impressed, especially pro photographer because they "know".

Definitely more than adequate for social media probably some choice printed photos.

Exactly. If you're comparing these photos to £1000+ camera + lens combos you're missing the point. We're talking about a 1/3in sensor size (3.99mm x (7.21?). To compare that to a proper mirrorless/dSLR is just silly. For the price and size, it's brilliant. DoF comes with wide apertures, yes, but also large sensors. My A7 has a 35.8×23.9 mm sensor and I put £1000+ glass onto it to get results like these. To get something even close to that from a smartphone? Colour me impressed.

The fake bokeh has already worn off since it looks weird like just a head floating in midair. Nothing like real DSLR bokeh.

Once again, it may be good to remind you that:

1) this is still in beta
2) Phil explicitly said this isn't to replace or compete with dSLR. It's just nice to have, and quite definitely does not work 100% of the time and preferably with human subjects because it can do better when it's able to detect a face and a body

Two things. Don't forget what you're currently using is in BETA. Secondly, i've noticed results can vary massively, sometimes you get the effect shown in your photo & sometimes is just melts away into buttery goodness. I guess being a beta, we'll just have to wait and see how it pans out. You can't beat the physics of large sensors and DoF, unfortunately!

That's actually pretty good. If you're bothered by the blur on dog's ears, my NIKKOR 50 f1.8 will do the same.

To be honest, this bokeh effect basically makes what used to look like a shot taken at f/22 now look like f/8. Some look a little shallower but nothing seems to be even close to a DX sensor!

The iPhone did real good avoiding those glasses!

That's what an SLR makes:

artsfon.com-72569.jpg

An head floating mid air.
Yup that's how it would actually look with a thin depth of field on a large sensor.
Not exactly focused on the eye because he was being gently rocked but you get the point.

Fake bokeh that looks like 3D head floating in midair against 2D body and background is not anything near real DSLR bokeh with depth perception.

For sure. But how many cell phone social media photographers actually know the difference?

I think you're asking too much from the depth effect of the 7 Plus. It was never meant to be a replacement for dSLR. The fact that it can simulate it and even look totally convincing in certain scenarios while STILL in beta is already fantastic

Then, if you think it's different, get the real deal, and have fun trying to put it in your pocket, and trying to make calls with it.

...and it's not trying to be. smh.

"We are not saying to throw out your DSLRs," said Phil Schiller, senior vice president of Apple's worldwide marketing. "What we are saying is this is the best camera we have ever made in an iPhone, and this is the best camera ever made in any smartphone."

You guys all took very good photos, much better than John Gruber. Checks his gallery at his blog to see how awful his are. :)

Funny how all the gear snobs are all going nuts about this. At the end of the day it's a pretty cool effect that Apple has been able to pull off mostly with software. If you're really into photography, you should know that gear doesn't matter as much as your composition and point of view. I've seen people do cool stuff with crappy cameras.

Here's one of my dog from last night. Agreed that the edges are quite soft, but this is the initial release of the feature in to the wild. I would expect some tweaking to portrait mode before it's final release. View attachment 657216
The ears are a blurry mess.

They aren't any further back than the blanket... and it's in focus. So funky and chintzy.
Honestly, with my 6s+, I feel like I can get shots pretty close to what some of these pics posted look like at least for close up shots.
And it will be optically correct, without any awkward blurring.

They are further back. The blanket/carpet is under the chin/eyes of the dog. The ears are definitely further back that even with a proper optical bokeh effect it would also have been slightly blurred

Could someone take a photo with some fairy lights/bare light bulbs/candles in the background?
I'd like to see how it handles highlights in the background and if you get those bubble type highlights!
Thanks :)

That may have been the case years ago when very few images you see were post processed and it only came down to if you got the image or not!
I don't see any of my photographer friends with basic equipment. If you're really into photography, you know that the glass matters more than the body!
