Thanks to a clever script posted on these forums I've managed to get myself a Pencil on Monday and I've hardly put it down since. I have switched from an actual notepad and pen to the Notes app and Pencil for all my everyday work related notes and the rest of the time I doodle on it constantly. Current favorites are the pencil tool on the Notes app (still unsurpassed), and Procreate. I've been a bit disappointed by apps like Paper and other 'famous' note taking apps for the horrible lag... the one that surprised me the most (positively) was Goodnotes, maybe the overall best for writing longhand.
Anyway here's a little sketch made in Procreate a few minutes ago!

Man, how did you do that in Notes? I like it!:)

Thank you! I do like the simplicity of the notes app, once you play with the different tools although minimal, you start to get a feel for how nice it is to quickly switch from pen to marker, eraser etc. My only complaint with the UI is I wished the undo was on the left side of the page for the left hand to tap more easily while drawing with your right hand, or make it adjustable within the page while drawing, rather than reaching to the upper left corner each time. Other than that it was smooth mixing between the tools and this one took about 15-20 minutes in between calls.

I am impressed. I have to play around more.
Cheers

I haven't really drawn since college (20+ years). I was never the best to begin with but the iPad Pro has got me interested in learning again and practicing. I'm just using notes and a pencil by 53. My Apple Pencil isn't scheduled to arrive until mid January.

It will be interesting to see how much better you like the Apple Pencil and what you can create with it.

Does anyone know how to do digital paintings like this on an iPad Pro...

for years i've been wanting to do it using a tablet but i am unsure of which program to use and how people achieve stuff like that.
I can do some very basic non-complex concept drawing using pencils, I do 2D drawing, sculpting, traditional paint, and photo-realistic stuff, but not these super good digital concept designs at all... I was hoping with having a proper art tablet I could try out that style of art. Anyone know if there's a class or is it more or less just doing it yourself? Thanks. :)

I drew the circle like I would normally draw a circle with analog materials, multiple quick circular strokes that overlap and build up the shape I want. After I achieved a satisfactory circle I used the eraser tool to clean it up. The result is what you see.

I think you can actually use real scales or the ones which have circles and triangles and other kind of patterns to draw on paper on your iPad Pro.

For the good artists on here, I'm really struggling drawing real-life people. I do fairly well with cartoons, but for some reason, I really suck at portraits and realism in general. Are there any books, websites or tips out there to help?

I would post a sample, but I'm afraid I'd get laughed out of here, lol. Thanks and Merry Christmas!

I'm one of newbies here, but soon enough I found that people on this forum are all pretty nice and not making those mean laughing and/or judgemental comments here, but more likely try to help other artists, encourage or inspire other artists(or whoever just loves to draw, wants to try!).
All drawings/paintings are unique, most important thing is finding your own style, sometimes more people like certain styles more than other kinds, and yes, that makes you feel good if many people "approve" your art style. But it's not most important portion of being artists.

I'm not interested into drawing people's portraits, but cats. When I started, I printed out the picture I wanted to draw, made grids over, and also on my paper I made grids and drew one square one time, then created whole portrait. Now I don't need to do that process since I get use to doing portraits, and now I kind of moved on to hand drawing digital art on iPad Pro more because of great Apple Pencil. Also sometimes tracing someone's sketches helps you to understand how line goes and positions of muscles, if you have problems to draw full human body, tracing anatomy book helps as well.
If realistic drawing is something you like to do and you love to do, keep practicing, some moment you suddenly feel "oh ok I got it!". :)

Thanks for the kind words. You're right. People, especially on this thread have been very helpful. I was trying to draw a picture of the Joker. Here is what I was trying to draw and this is what I have so far. I'm just really disappointed in how off I was in facial features. I'm trying to figure out the nuances that maybe I can fix it.

It was frustrating to work on something for a few days, then look at it when it's getting close to the end and realize how bad it is.
