i'd be down for some drawing games! ive seen a couple. one option would be how they do the photo challenge here on these forums. every week, the winner from the last week suggests a topic/challenge/subject etc and everyone submits them in the thread. the winner from last week declares the winner for the current week, then they are responsible for suggesting the next challenge and so on and so forth.

I haven't upgraded from my iPad Air 2 to the 10.5 Pro as of yet. But, I spent about 30 mins in an Apple Store with Procreate (on the right in the photo). Wow, I am really impressed with the device and app. I hope to have the Pro in my hands by September in time for my NaNoWriMo prep.

I have really enjoyed following this thread. I am not a drawing artist, but I really admire those with the talent and skill to do this. This thread, and this thread alone, inspired me to buy an Apple Pencil, Procreate, and I'm thinking about taking drawing classes so I can start to learn the basics.

Thank you everyone for the inspiration!

I'd love to see some basic tutorials for drawing - really basic! :(
YouTube has lots for all skill levels and mediums. Once you start watching some it’ll recommend others and you end up with a huge list of interesting artists and approaches.. :) What you’d want tutorials in depends on what you want to draw really, too..? As there are some for pretty much everything.

Tumblr and deviantart are good resources for tutorials too. Lots of communities dumping art tuts.

Thank you for sharing your experience of drawing on the iPad with Procreate. I just bought a gently used iPad Pro 9.7" for 2 reasons:
  • to save money by buying it instead of replacing my failing Macbook Pro (I have an iMac also)
  • because I like the idea that I can sketch with it (will be getting the pencil + Procreate soon)
After reading your comment about latency in the 2nd generation iPad, I'm hoping I've not made a mistake by this purchase. Would you please elaborate a bit comparing the 2 iPads in your drawing/painting processes?
Fear not, you won't notice any latency issues. Unless you compare them side by side, and have

Don't worry about your purchase! The latency is certainly improved on the new models, but was already great on the first gen. Personally, I love the new models. However, my dad (who is a professional artist) upgraded to the new model and said he hardly noticed the improvement.

Looking forward to seeing your art. I've been following along with various YouTube tutorials, and working on a course I tried to complete years and years ago, along with practicing every day. It is becoming fun and I am very gentle and patient with myself because I know it will take a very long time to get to that place.

Like yourself, this thread gave me confidence to start drawing again. I'm drawing daily, which the iPad Pro helped nurture. I hope I did not offend @wib as I completely misread his post.

I don't think you said anything offensive (maybe you're thinking of someone different, somewhere else). Watching your progress and reading about the tutorials you've been using is really inspirational. I wrote them down and when my brother said 'I can't draw, so I'm not really using my pencil yet', I told him about them. He hasn't done anything yet as he's really busy, but I think he will.

I completely love my 10.5 (and Procreate). I had been sitting on a picture book idea for over a year and bought the 9.7 with the intention of drawing, but ended up using it for writing instead, connected to memorising vocabulary for my language studies. Something clicked with the 10.5 and since my exam was finished and I have more free time, I've been on a drawing frenzy. I am not an artist but I can draw my character and it's a joy on the 10.5. If, by a miracle, someone liked it enough to want to publish it and I got the chance to draw more, I'd like a 12.9. These are all pipe-dreams, but the thing is, the technology and the apps can give ordinary people like me who aren't gifted, the chance to dream...

I completely missed that you were drawing and did not know how to reduce your file size so you could upload your files. Glad I did not offend. Congrats on completing your exam. I am finally committing to the Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain program (my third copy of the book and 2nd portfolio) along with watching YouTube videos by Proko, Art of Wei and Jescia Hopper.

The iPad Pro, the Pencil and Procreate makes me want to draw characters from movies (and eventually my own) and birds too. I think everyone who posts is talented and inspires me to move forward and keep trying.

So, I spent a bit more time with the iPad and Procreate. Works beautifully for an amateur coming from graphite and colored pencil. Here is my eye. Not sure how much time. Maybe 5-6 hours or so. Part of that is learning Procreate as well as the pencil.
