No, the iPhone comes from an export bonded zone in China. The materials used to make iPhone enter China with documentation indicating it’s for export. One assembled, it leaves China without the need for customs.
I wouldn't do that as it's a risky move. In the past, when some people chose that option, it added another business day before it became available for pick up.
In theory, UPS should send the package to the UPS store for 9/16 pickup. But in reality it often gets onto the UPS truck on 9/16 and the driver delivers the package to the UPS store, which means it won't be available until next business day.
No. You can actually find your package using the phone number if apple has not released the tracking number.
Do NOT select a UPS Store...you will have to wait an additional day. Select a UPS Customer Center. They will hold it and you can pick it up first thing Friday morning when they open. I have done this every year for the past 6 years. I get there when they open at 8:00 and I have my phone by 8:10.
You are so lucky are center only allows pick ups between 3pm-5pm. Learned that the hard way.

The actual answer is that very often, orders arrive toward the beginning of the date range given, and it’s not impossible for it to arrive before the estimated dates altogether.
Plus all it says is label created. Not that the carrier has the parcel in possession.
If you select UPS Store pick up it's a risky move because it will tell you that it will delay 1 business day. However, for me *knock on wood, I've had good lucks with UPS Store pick up on launch day. YMMV
It could happen. I remember there was some people who got their iphone 4 a day before release via UPS and FEDEX. Friend of mine also got his iPhone X that Thursday night before launch.
Getting before launch is just a rare accident. Most launch day orders could be delivered earlier but are deliberately held by the courier on Apple's orders. I'm more interested in if the after launch day delivery estimates are perhaps a little conservative.
It’s not even worth trying, IMO. If you do get someone to unknowingly release it to you early, you could potentially be causing them to lose their job.
Again, that's not what I was asking though.
