What I find funny is that for the last couple of iOS updates tons of people on here were complaining that it was the same old iOS as the previous version. Well, now we have a new iOS with some awesome features (that probably should have been there the whole time) and now people are complaining that it's too new.
That is purely anecdotal. It might as well be different people who were happy with iOS 6. The ones who are happy with iOS 7 now are not the ones complaining after all.
I think there was a widespread feeling that iOS had started to fall behind, despite that Apple continuously touted it as the most advanced mobile OS. When I see what Android devices are capable of nowadays, it manifests those worries. Although iOS retained some of its advantages over Android, that does not answer the question why we cannot have the best of both worlds, or why iOS cannot be better.
To me it seems that iOS 7 is (partly) the response to this. It shows that Apple is capable of revamping its OS enough to actually split its user base. Some see it as leap forward, others as a sign that Apple is still not taking the competition serious enough. In my opinion, iOS did not need such a radical design update, but just more improvements. Of course, design improvements were overdue, most users probably agree. But we are still dealing with annoyances that have been present since iOS 1 and are now dealing with new ones that have become apparent just because of the redesign too. To me the new design is just different, but not necessarily better. I value performance enhancements and new features a lot more, because they improve my user experience.
I don't know what has happened at Apple since Forstall got the sack. I don't know when Federighi and Ive took over and what they have accomplished aside from the redesign. I have the feeling that Apple lost precious time with the overhaul and the resources could have been used better, notably on bug fixing and more structural improvements. I'm not sure whether I would want to have Forstall back, but I do know that the management shake-up has delayed things. And personally, I was happy with iOS myself, although iOS 6 was indeed a bit of a letdown, not to mention to avoidable Maps debacle.
I think the mistake was to remove Forstall's position, not necessarily Forstall himself. Ive thinks too much as a designer, not as a user like Forstall did.
