Actually, democracy is all about the will of the majority. And the majority of the population doesn't give a rat's ass about being watched and tracked, and would be very happy to trade freedom and privacy for perceived safety, especially when children are involved.

It doesn't even take a "safety" argument. A lot of people are willing to trade privacy for a glittery, popular, must-have app.

Unfortunately, democracy also means that smart people get to live in a world that's shaped and led by the stupid. Because the stupid have always had and will always have an overwhelming numerical advantage.
Very true!

So, the CSAM scan doesn't jeopardize democracy. Quite the contrary, it is a product of democracy.

Well, America is not a democracy anyway. It is a Constitutional Republic. We try to avoid Tyranny of the Majority here.

So CSAM has no negatives because they’re going to do it anyway. The world is only made better by locating nonces and democracy is in exactly the place it is now.

Say what?
What the Government is not currently doing is scanning your personal device(s) bypassing device encryption and reporting on it all without your knowledge or specifics or consent.
They do enough. Actually they do too much. As these things are found out we need to push back and set firm limits.

Sad part is they don’t care as they don’t know or understand just what this means.
This is it like television or movies. The current media and education system isn’t helping either.

But they’re not doing that with CSAM either.

If Apple implements this feature you can count on it happening. This I am basing on the inquiries we know about and likely others we don’t.

I disagree, and even if they did I don’t believe we’re going to get to a situation where the thought police come around and snatch people from their homes for supporting a political party. If that were to happen society has much bigger problems than CSAM.

There is a serious reason why client side has never been executed before and every single security and privacy group (including some Nation States) expressed serious concerns against this. Never mind this is new legal territory also.

Believe what you want.

It’s amazing how many sheep think Apple still stands for privacy.

It’s even more amazing how many brain dead sheep can’t see past now. If you build something that can scan images for content of any specific type, it will be used to scan for other “non-desirable content” such as political post against increasingly tyrannical governments (Australia, Austria, anyone?).

Anyone who thinks any government does the right thing is blind, anyone who thinks Democracy always leads to the best results hasn’t studied history.

Just an FYI..."Apple" is not "The Government"...

No. But Apple can be forced to work for the government.
Once they implement a backdoor, they will be forced to hand over the key to it whenever the government feels like it.
This. Apple will remain compliant with the law. They cannot comply with the law if they do not possess the technical ability to do so.

nothing changes
Of course, obtaining a warrant from a judge in a specific case, based on probable cause, for a specific individual that makes the subject of an investigation, is exactly the same as surveying the entire population just in case some individuals may happen to break the law in the future. Right. Nothing changes. 🙄😵‍💫

Another case of "I haven't actually read what Apple is doing, so I'll just jump to preposterous conclusions."

So let's see...
Just what is Apple doing today...
  • Scanning iCloud Mail
  • Responding and complying with warrants for iCloud Data
  • Complying with laws
What Apple isn't doing today ...
  • Scanning iCloud for CSAM
What Apple wants to do tomorrow ...
  • Scan on device for CSAM

Reminder: Apple can scan iCloud for CSAM if they want.

  • Get notified when someone uploads multiple known illegal images to iCloud so they may notify the NCEMC who may then notify the authorities if deemed necessary. They do this despite never seeing any actual images and never contact law enforcement or the government themselves.

Reminder: Apple can scan iCloud for CSAM if they want.
FIFY ;)

EDIT: Added my winky face since I respect dk001's responses even if we disagree somewhat.. 😇
