Been almost a year since I saw this at WWDC and I haven’t seen a single app use it yet. Not one.

There’s a pretty long list on the first page of this thread, including ubiquitous apps that nearly everyone uses. If you’re already logged in via Facebook or by email, you won’t ever see Sign In With Apple until you‘ve log out. If you’re waiting for brand new apps that you don’t already have an account with, then you’ll be waiting a while. Check the list for apps you already use.

The Pinterest app on my iPhone and 12.9" iPad Pro got SIWA for quite a while. However, it was never on my iPad Mini. Until today, I decided to uninstall, install, launch the app, kill the app, launch the app again, SIWA finally appeared.

Ok, this is really cool. Glo on AppleTV added Sign In With Apple.

I wondered how that would work. It’s a very smooth, seamless process. Click Sign In With Apple and a notification pops up on your iPhone or iPad with the Sign In With Apple pop up card.

Very simple. This is classic “it just works” Apple. Surprise and delight!

In here as well they don’t give you an option to hide the email?!

They do. When I tapped on the notification banner, it took me to the Sign In With Apple Card where I could hide my email.

It seems I’m missing the entire flow here. Do you get another option after it shows sign in with your Apple ID?

I think you're missing that the second image is just the camera app that I was taking a picture of my TV to show what the TV was telling me but notice the notification banner. You tap that and the standard Sign In With Apple card comes up giving you the option of signing in with your email or hiding it.

Some people are seeing Sign In With Apple on Reddit. It hasn’t shown up in the app yet but the website has the option. Looks like they’re testing it.

This would actually get me to use Reddit. The place is largely infested with trolls and hackers. It’s the last place I’d want my real identity to be traced. Give me a completely anonymous way of logging in and I might participate in some subreddits.

Pushbullet pulled out of iOS entirely. Their justification:

“The root issue is that Apple now requires "Sign in with Apple" for any app that offers Google / Facebook sign in. We have no interest in adding yet another sign in option everywhere, which is a lot of work, just to make Apple happy.”

That’s just code for “we can’t offer you Apple’s private sign-in because we need your data to sell to Facebook and Google to make our app profitable”.

Any apps that refuse to implement Sign In With Apple but have no issue offering Facebook/Google are just telling on themselves.

Wow that’s crazy. That’s probably a lot of revenue they’re leaving on the table by leaving iOS—which would mean they’d think they’d lose even more by implementing Sign In with Apple.

Also the reason their answer is complete BS is that if it was only a matter of not wanting to put in the work, then they could have simply disabled all sign ins other than email (since I believe Apple only requires SIWA if the app offers FB/Google/etc sign ins). What other reason is there to leave ALL their iOS customers out to dry and give up their business? They’re either being disingenuous or straight up lying.

I hope this news can get published in a macrumors article so as to get some attention on them and make them either reverse course or ‘fess up.

edit- ok I found the link:
https://www.reddit.com/r/PushBullet/comments/eirc1m This happened a few months ago actually. And they were being disingenuous. The reddit user speaking for Pushbullet claimed that the root issue for taking down the iOS app was that Apple was requiring SIWA. But in reading the rest of the user’s comments, it’s clear that they simply didn’t want to put any work into the app whatsoever. They were already leaning toward discontinuing the app and they were just using Apple’s (and Facebook’s apparently) update requirements as an excuse to go ahead and cut it off. They even said, “If you want someone to be upset at, be upset at Apple and Facebook enforcing dumb and arbitrary rules“—(though I believe they were neither dumb nor arbitrary rules, but that’s beside the point). So they just used this timing as an excuse, and so that they could try to put the blame on someone else.

One thing I don’t like about sign-in with Apple is even though you have the ability to hide your email, Apple still shares your full name with the service you are signing up with, so still can’t stay fully anonymous.

You can change it.

Just hit the (x) next to your name and give them any name you want.

IMG_FB1D7A2A9375-1.jpeg

I'm not that paranoid though. I just don't want companies taking my data outside of the app that I'm using. Unless your name is incredibly unique, it would be very difficult to track you just by your name. And given that that doesn't address the majority of the population, it wouldn't be worthwhile to develop tracking tools that only track the 0.0000001% of people who have truly unique names.

I love how they started by saying this: The root issue is that Apple now requires "Sign in with Apple" for any app that offers Google / Facebook sign in. We have no interest in adding yet another sign in option everywhere, which is a lot of work, just to make Apple happy.

And then followed up by saying: Instead, we’d love to just leave our iOS app alone for the time being, however Facebook has gotten angry we haven’t updated our Facebook Login SDK on iOS. Thus, they’ve forced our hand to either go through all the work of updating our app, or instead, simply unpublish.

So they said Apple is to blame but then went on to say they unpublished because of the so-called "pressure" from Facebook to update the SDK.

With that response I highly doubt it’s a “they” situation. It’s probably an indie developer who just can’t be bothered with development with the app anymore. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Same. If I wanted to use it, I’d just use a burner email but the way in which Pinterest operates has turned me off from their platform and I’ve just deleted my old account and the app itself.

Finally it appeared for me on Pinterest.

But it won’t let me not only hide my email but I think Apple doesn’t send them the email address at all if you use Sign In with Apple that’s why they’re asking you to add your email address in the next step.

This is crazy! I want to report this practice to Apple but not sure if there’s any Avenue for that.

For now, I’ve just posted a 1 star review. Uninstalled.

No, it looks like they do get your real email right away. eBay doesn’t ask for an email after that point but immediately associates my AppleID to my existing eBay account with that email.

Apple is providing developers some leeway for apps that require a real identification for security purposes. While eBay may have a legitimate claim to that (they need to know who you are so you’re not shafting buyers), Pinterest is clearly abusing this loophole.

I’d do what you did, delete the app and give them a one star review, indicating in the review what they’re doing to warn other users and dissuade Pinterest from doing it.

The Washington Post gets around the Sign In With Apple requirement by bouncing you over to their website to log in, after which they offer you to sign in with Amazon, Facebook or Google but not Apple.

To be fair, this was the case before Sign In With Apple was announced but it demonstrates another loophole.

This should still fall under the requirements.

TED Talks has added Sign In With Apple

IMG_DBBE4E66C4ED-1.jpeg

I had been pestering them for a while and while they responded with "It's coming soon", "soon" turned out to be several months. I can finally use it again with an account :)

Off the "Top Outstanding List" and into the "Available" list!

EDIT: Just wanted to note that I decided to create a new profile even though I've been on TED for years with a bunch of history in playlists and liked videos. Like I said a few pages back, it's surprising how little we have on profiles in apps and sites that we're afraid to start all over with.

My method: I opened the app on my iPhone, signed in with Apple. I went to Safari on my Mac and signed in to my old account. I opened all the videos in my playlists and likes in tabs, then I went through one by one, hitting the Share > AirDrop to my iPhone which opened in the app, hit Add to Playlist or Like. It took me less than 10 minutes.

Looks like the Panera app added SIWA but when I tried it yesterday, it didn't seem to work. It kept saying that "We Couldn't Find Your Account" and this was using SIWA.
