Do you know for a fact that it does?
no, but I'm not making claims that a firmware update would fix the issue.

Well be quiet then...
So you're mad at sling for not supporting older hardware. Then you claim it could all be fixed with a firmware update. But you don't really know that for sure. Then you get mad at me for calling you out about it?
... ok.
Exactly..a firmware update to slingbox should have been able to fix this. It is basically a PC.

Right. And so is the computer in my car.
I take it you're not an embedded engineer.
People stop your crying..hardware will always become obsolete..welcome to technology.
Yes, but it shouldn't become "obsolete" just a year or so after it is sold.
There are Macintosh models that were released 7 years ago that are STILL officially supported by Leopard. Apple treats their customers right.
Apple may be trying to get us to buy their latest and greatest hardware, but they don't simply take a big stinky dump over those of us who can't afford to upgrade our computers every year.
Sling Media should borrow a page from Apple's playbook and support our legacy Slingboxes.

But your Pro will work, it's listed in the compatible devices. I don't see what you're all worked up about. If this is true, and Slingbox does force everybody to buy new boxes, without giving us any reason as to why, we're only correct in assuming that they're ripping pages right out of Apple's greedy little playbook running the "hook and rob". I've owned a Slingbox Pro just about since the day it was released and I've been an avid supporter of their company, as slow as they can be sometimes. Again though, if this is true and it is a greed scheme, I'll refuse to support them as a company any longer and strongly urge everybody to do the same. I'll also be sure to write them a nice little letter directing them to this thred, letting them know they've lost me as a customer (and gained one for Orb), for whatever that's worth. I can't even begin to explain how sick I am of corrupt, greedy companies with dirty politics - especially with the economy the way it is. I know it may sound like I may be straying off topic, or making a mountain out of a mole hole, but that's exactly the reason we're all in this recession right now...greed! We now have more and more of these smaller companies looking at the big dogs like Apple and AIG, and following their unethical recipe to get rich quick by robbing the consumer. The point is...if you want really want to put a stop to all this cr@p, stop supporting these companies. I never thought I would say this, but DON'T buy a slingbox, stick to your video podcasts, i.tv, or buy an Orb enabled video card. Let them know they were wrong and we're actually not suckers.
I apologize to Sling in advance if there is an actual valid reason for needing a new box...in which case, I still love you guys. Regardless though, we do need to put a stop to these greedy companies that are growing at an exponential rate.
Why is everyone blaming Sling instead of Apple? This sounds exactly like Jobs and his YouTube video format war.
Seems to me like it's the same reason the iPhone isn't able to display realtime streaming video protocol, Flash, WMV, etc.
Perhaps if Apple supported more video formats, Sling wouldn't have to use only H.264 capable boxes with it.
Whatever someone knows, please do tell. From the article below, they say slingbox won't on the 3G network for the iphone because:
Slingbox, which would use large amounts of wireless network capacity, could create congestion and potentially prevent other customers from using the network. The application does not run on our 3G wireless network. Applications like this, which redirect a TV signal to a personal computer, are specifically prohibited under our terms of service. We consider smartphones like the iPhone to be personal computers in that they have the same hardware and software attributes as PCs.
Then why does the slingbox app work just fine using 3G on the AT&T network when using the AT&T Tilt smart phone?
http://features.csmonitor.com/innovation/2009/05/13/att-to-slingbox-iphone-users-no-3g-for-you/
it wont work simply because apple/ATT won't allow it to work. if you hack your phone you can get it to use 3G just fine.
I understand that, but the fact that AT&T claims that the reason why they won't do it is because it will hinder the 3G bandwith is complete BS. If that were true, they would discontinue slingbox use on all smartphones. What kind of dumbass spokesperson for AT&T would make such a claim, when all the evidence available clearly opposes it!

Um, I think the reason AT&T won't allow it is b/c the iPhone is the number one selling phone in the country. So, if a ton of people with iPhones were using slingbox apps over 3G it would cause a lot larger bandwidth problem. I've never even heard of the AT&T Tilt, so I'm sure AT&T doesn't care who uses the 3G bandwidth with that phone.
so what are you going to do about it?
"if only I worked for microsoft....where things are done right the first time!"
