Yes especially now that people aren't use to waiting for anything. I'm amazed that I haven't seen hordes of grown men and women throwing themselves to the ground and having a tantrum on CNN.

Other phones support this app... on AT&T's network so I don't buy AT&T or Apple is stopping Slingbox from developing the app.

Not really... the issue is that there are MANY MANY iphone users and stats show we are hungry hungry bandwidth beasts WITHOUT slingplayer...
Lord help AT&T when sling player finally arrives.

But I agree with you 100%. It is not fair that iPhone users should be unfairly punished for something that other cell phone users enjoy.

Becareful what you wish for. I also own an iphone 3g and would love for Sling to be on it as an app.

However, judging from using my BB Bold with Sling (it's wonderful with the Bold's high resolution) network conditions will be tricky.

I was in Knoxville, TN (pop. around 500K) and using my BB Bold with Sling on 3g during Super Bowl since I was traveling. Perfect conditions (maybe less users in Knoxville, TN).

The minute I hit Orlando (bigger area population wise), I launch Sling on my BB Bold and kept on getting interruptions.

I'm afraid if I travel to a much larger area like my home area of Washington DC or even up to NYC for the weekend, I would be very limited to what I could watch on sling with the iphone 3g data.

Sling is very intensive and if it's available on the iPhone 3g, it will degrade their network.

AT&T networks are already pretty taxed in many populated areas. Not sure there is much they can do about it either and while not everyone will use Sling it will add considerable amounts of bandwidth use.

Personally i'll move to another carrier if they can't or are unwilling to upgrade their network. You can't sell a device and advertise all the goodies and expect people to only use them after prime time because the network can't handle it. I'm sure if your cable company didn't have enough bandwidth to send all your stations from 6-11 PM and you only got some random half of the lineup most wouldn't stand for it.

Regardless the Iphone may be top dog today and it is. That said there will be better phones and more open platforms maturing over the next year or two. Apple is not known for its speedy updates nor their openness of their software and systems.

Everything you said was my point exactly, so I'm not sure why my original post got misinterpreted so wrongly...oops I guess.
FYI for me at&t gets soo bad that at times I can not even check the weather let alone stream ANYTHING!!!!!!

And I also agree with the few posts directly above, there will be other systems (read andriod and symbian) on other carriers... now I'm just waiting for my 2 year AT&T lockdown to expire and I will RETURN to a better network.
That is unless Apple introduces something to blow to competition away again ;)

Purchased Slingbox

Purchased my first Slingbox on Ebay last night. I've got my fingers crossed hoping that the iPhone Slingbox player comes out very soon! :D

Cheers.

Re: needing a Sling Solo or HD...

Supposedly the older boxes stream WMV, and can't be upgraded to stream the H.264 video that the iPhone needs.

In any case, at least they could've warned people much further ahead of time, so they wouldn't be buying the wrong model in anticipation.

(Haven't checked into it yet, so grain of salt here.)

Amazing that a firmware update to slingbox could not resolve this...hmmm

My issue is that Sling's Press Release didn't say why the older versions wouldn't be supported. One would think that if you were going to alienate a chunck of your user base, that you would at least tell them why. I personally think that some of the anger towards this hardware restriction would be less if they would have just said in the PR that it was because of encoding or some other technological issue. Instead, they made no mention why, so people rightfully believe that it is because they just want to sell more units.

They did consider a backlash, which is why the put the "upgrade incentive" on their website. Maybe they didn't do the math on it and realize that $50 off of a $180 unit + the cost of the app is still WAY too much money to spend just to get streaming TV on your phone. Orb can already do this for much less.

It just smells of a big public relations nightmare.

That's my $0.02

Looks like Slingmedia is just taking notes from Apple! Forcing people to UPGRADE to have the latest gadget and using the huge user base of the iPhone to do it. Should have seen this coming really, Apple sells a $79 dollar ipod but then will stick you for a $29 proprietary adapter so you don't have to use their crappy ear buds. Purchase a mid 2008 Macbook only a few months before the 24" ACD comes out... Ooops sorry you need to upgrade to the UMB we don't support the old port...

Looks like Slingmedia has been taking notes from Apple rather well. I hope it bites them in the butt with slow sales but it won't.... in true Apple/Iphone fan fashion people will line up to buy the new hardware and hand over the cash because they want the latest and greatest. This is how the Apple fans have been trained, Sling finally figured it out. Bastards!

Exactly..a firmware update to slingbox should have been able to fix this. It is basically a PC.

!

k, the ipod shuffle thing is just stupid. But the rest of it, you can't blame companies for moving tech forwards.
