Macbook air wake from sleep and more
Hello all. Just found this forum and thought I might be able to get some help with an odd problem on my mid-2012 Macbook air 13". I bought it with the 128 GB drive which I filled up pretty quick so I installed a Transcend 480 GB SSD which has worked well for over a year. I often use the computer with a 26" auxillary monitor and bluetooth keyboard and mouse. I keep the Magsafe adapter plugged in so that I can close the case and use only the larger screen. (Computer does not shut down with case closed while plugged in.) At night I move my mouse to the upper left corner where I have it set to start a screen saver. All was well until recently when the computer would not wake the next morning. I don't remember the specifics unfortunately but moving the mouse did nothing. Eventually I disconnected the aux. monitor and rebooted using the power button. I got the Apple logo and the progress bar which moved very slowly for a minute and then I got a gray screen with a circle and a line thru it ("stop"). No matter how many times I tried rebooting this is as far as I get. I have tried many suggestions online for restarting in different modes but none have gotten me to start up. I tried "safe mode" and although the computer appears to start in safe mode the keyboard is not functional (I cannot type any commands on the command line). Here is the interesting thing: when I put the original 128 GB drive back into the computer it starts just fine. And if I plug the 480 GB drive into the USB port and reboot the computer restarts with that drive as the primary and all my programs and documents are available!! I have tried putting drive this back into the case but no go: just get the gray screen with the "stop: sign. Any ideas? Would love to be able to get my 480 GB back into the case! Should I back it up and erase, then put it back in and restore? Would that be the easiest solution? Is there some way to get the computer to recognize my 480 GB drive without going thru this? And if I get this working again is it a bad idea to use the computer with an auxillary monitor and the case closed???
