Ok, here are the first A96 ingredients. Framework will follow later in a couple of hours.
Hopefully we do not run into the "change any framework -> no boot" problem with A190. (Kexts are no problem, though).

Something inside me, tells, that we HAVE TO replace this 0B binaries with not empty from 10A96/10A222...
[automerge]1590321912[/automerge]
Larsvonhier can you upload 10A96 and 10A222 elsewhere? Or i missed link?

P.S: Another observation. The graphical interface in 10A190 on the NVIDIA graphics card is extremely unstable ... Once again I got a flickering white screen for no reason.

What could we gain more with this update? Will Leopard be more optimized & faster than with 10.5.8?

Cheers, Nikola!

Remains to be investigated. Most likely we won’t see any speed improvements as in SL, but there’s certainly the possibility of upgrading some of the apps and maybe some frameworks to more recent versions. If you investigate one of the 10A partitions via 10.5 you’ll find that most of the apps are 10.6 specific and won’t run but some aren’t and will open on 10.5 with higher version numbers (although not completely functional without the appropriate dependencies). I’d be interested to see if the security frameworks and system webkit can be upgraded, although this will probably need to be compiled rather than copied across directly. Just food for thought at this point.

Hi Chris,

I remember now I had that problem in the begining but I also
felt the Finder in 096 had less functionality than Leopard's so I've
been using the 10.5.8 since.

Best regards,

@vddrnnr Did you copy the whole app over or just move the 10.5.8 executable into the SL app?

I’m wondering if the inability to display in icon view correctly is linked to drawing shadows, as the text is visible when highlighted. It’s interesting that it appears to function correctly on the cube in the video though - maybe it’s using a fallback as the desktop in the video doesn’t have the translucent global menu bar.

Hi Chris,

I copied the whole app.
Right now I only have one problem which I've just noticed today.
It's a problem with the quicklook framework that
when trying to generate the video files thumbnails crashes the quicklookd process.
Other than that it works perfectly.

Best regards,
voidRunner

Hello!

I've done some more digging and have found the following, which I'd forgotten all about:

1) I have A10354 burned to a dual layer DVD sometime in 2009. I've updated the wiki page and will find somewhere to upload it, as I guess it still might have some PPC stuff on it which could be useful.

2) Have found the following musings from 2009 on post-it with the DVD;

"Compile open-source kexts back to PPC" (NB - Great to see that the kernel could be done for this. Might be worth looking at the OpenSource kexts still available if any are missing/not supported in later versions, but the source is.)

"Use kexts from 10.5.x"

"Check kexts from earlier builds of SL".

Looks like the intention was there back there then to poke about with PPC stuff even further with Snow Leopard - but alas this build I'd picked/had access to was way past the PPC being stripped out of it, so probably stopped progress there. I remember spending a while on Vuze/Torrents trying to get this to download back then.

I've also updated the wiki with the details of the Digital Audio boot I got working - as this also had an ADC card in from a PMG5, modded to work in the G4 AGP/ADC setup (pin 21 mods).

Again, so glad this thread exists and that progress has been made, and get to contribute to it all these years later! :)

It's interesting watching/contributing developments to this thread and then seeing mentions on various FaceBook groups and YouTube!

James.

Nice! Even if, as-is, this doesn’t run on PPC architecture, it’s still worth adding to the Macintosh Garden.

Do you plan to try implementing your own 2009 notes to try to get 10A354 to run on a PPC box?

I have been a Snow Leopard hackintosh Intel user for more than 8 years. Protools 9/10 and Logic 9 were my killer app for the Core2Quad hackintosh. For me SL is the best OS ever. I love Mac OS9, Panther, Tiger and Leo on my PPC machines. For me Core Image is not esencial. In fact I only have Geforce 4MX graphics cards and it is only needed to have Quartz running to have a good UI experience.

I have reread this post and I see various and different goals:

1 Make a better Leopard with kext/frameworks from any SL versions, also called 10.5.9 (2020-2021)

2 Make a decent-mostly working SL PPC developer preview taking things from 10.5.8 (Now)

3 Make the last SL developer preview working via compiling Intel Stuff from Apple Open Source (2020-2021)

4 Make Golden Master work via adding Leopard and Apple Open Source

For me any of these are interesting, but not totally usefull if we have to make new apps for it to shine.

Also I am not sure if the golden master is better than vanilla 10.5.8. The good stuff for SL demands 10.6.3 and up, and most of this stuff isnt universal.

The most important developer for PPC in the last 5 years was Cameron with TFF and he is more interested in keep a browser in Tiger. Fortunately for us, wicknik, alex-free and other users had developed more browsers/way to use youtube.

Unless browsers benchmark higher on SL-PPC than on vanilla 10.5.8 I only see a benefit in the use of a higher Xcode.

If we ask developers to ADD SL-PPC also as a target some of them could quit developing. Hard enough to keep Tiger+Leo (and Panther) to add a 3rd (4th) platform with even less users than PPC Linux. Maybe if you all and some developers add effort we could get the last drop of juice for our PPC machines, but only with minor improvements I guess.

Dont get my words wrong. It is awesome what you have achieved. It is a dream to have another platform for PPC. But to give SL-PPC the stability of 10.5.8 will take months-years of hard work and that will only render on an almost empty platform.

Grand Central Dispatch https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Central_Dispatch is a factor that can potentially increase performance on Duals and Quads(G4 or G5), but we need a libdispatch PPC and that could take months/years.

New compiles of apps ditching G3 and using GCP can render better apps, but I dont see myself as a SL-PPC user till this summer if thing mature soon.

Thanks to all and keep making the impossible achivable

Evening.
Oldskool PPC/MIPS/Alpha/Sparc enthusiast here.
Been following this for some days now. I have a G4 Mac Mini for testing at hand (the other possible beneficiaries of this 10.6 on PPC are a Dual G4 500 Cube and a Gigabit Ethernet tower. But it will be a while until I can use those again).
I remember compiling OSX mach kernel back in the Tiger days for a specific purpose. Let's get this cat on the PPCs roaring!

I have a candidate for the name: ZNO LEPPARD PPC

Digging the energy.

I do think there is a lot of trial and error ahead.

I would figure we just coordinate into two routes:

Leopard+ = Starting with 10.5.8 and finding out newer pieces of compiled or compilable software to tweak and improve Leopard. This could include components from Snow Leopard development release or later builds as well as open source packages. A simple one would be updating the included apache web server, which is pretty straightforward.

Maybe this would be a new thread?

Snow Leopard = Trying to hack together the most workable Snow Leopard build using various available sources and some compiling options. The big challenge with Snow Leopard beyond the development builds is that extensions are pure x86. It's quite a powerful anti-hacking tool right there to discourage PPC users from trying to make Snow Leopard work, but I also know copying over the kernel and frameworks doesn't lead to a boot yet either. Lots of trial and error ahead.

I'm intrigued by the first option, but I'm going to continue to try to get some sort of hybrid bootable OS using the SL_PPC image and my release of Snow Leopard DVD (since it's handy).

Well i have a some news about Wi-Fi in SL. It is start to work. Partly. As i don't have a 10A96, i placed Apple80211.framework from Leopard, and AirPort Extreme now powered On, and detect some Wi-Fi networks, but can't connect to them, as i understand, some tools to make that connection is not present, but it is a progress, private framework not caused Kernel Panic!

AirPort 2.png

AirPort 1.png

But, system profile can't get actual information about AirPort card. I suppose some tools still missing (AirPort.framework in /System/Library/Frameworks ????)

SysProf Fail.png

Also i see, that 10A190 present an empty AppleAirPort.framework. So i bet, that in 10A96 AppleAirport.framework, and Apple80211.framework will make AirPort Cards fully functional as expected!
[automerge]1590383374[/automerge]
And something about PCI. In my PowerBook G4 not the only one GeForce FX 5200 Go not working, also Ethernet NIC is too. What the connection between them? Is same PCI logic. Graphics card is AGP, Ethernet is on PCI. AppleMacRiscPCI.kext is present in system, and it is not empty, so i bet, something with PCIFamily.kext.

P.S: Funny thing. My Mac Pro with bootable NVMe SSD in target disk mode on FireWire mapped that drive for PowerBook G4! )))))

Another news. Ethernet start working, but i've done nothing for that... 😅

Right after that, ntpd daemon goes into crush loop...

About AirPort. I at last downloaded 10A96, and replaced AirPort.framework and Apple80211.framework, as well as networksetup cli util from 10A96 to 10A190. But it still can't connect to Wi-Fi networks. airportd failed to list network interfaces...

Also, i replaced whole group of cups* binaries from 10.5.8 to 10A190 and solved the problem with cups daemon.

Of course it WILL NOT work, because it is EMPTY (sic!)! ))

I´ll try to prepare a 10A96 non-server version like the A190 that sets in at the registration screen after install.
Might be a couple of days until then, though.

As for the NVIDIA: I do not have any instabilities with my armada of Nvidia PPC Macs. Perhaps it´s your ageing HW or RAM? Is the machine long time stable with 10.5.8 or 10.4.11?

All three installer-links are on page #1, see table 2. edit: You found them! ;-)
[automerge]1590427223[/automerge]
Interesting side note: Some of my PBs (i.e. 500MHz Titanium) cannot connect to my Airport Extreme running 10.5.8 (!) since I updated the firmware there (or changed settings I do not know). Might be related to airport cards that can only encrypt with WEP instead of WPA/WPA2? Just mentioning this so you might not waste time hunting ghosts when Airport shows up, shows networks but cannot connect?!

Nope, main OS on PB G4 is 10.4.11 (Universal Binary Server), and it is rock solid stable...

Also, i see, that DirectoryService eating CPU, often. What cause that, don’t know.

My PB G4 running 10.4.11 Server connects to WPA2-Enterprise wi-fi network, so...

Hi all,

Following my previous post on how to get "smoother" graphics on Radeons without QE/CI
I changed some of the other frameworks inside the ApplicationServices framework, namely
CoreText, ATS and QD Things seem a bit "smoother" especially regarding "Text" related elements.

I'm also posting my last version of "Nocturne" app I posted earlier for @Larsvonhier to test I think it helps
when enabling the "Hide Desktop". I'll try and add at least "Drive Icons" later so it will be a more complete
"Desktop Replacement" instead of just hiding the desktop with your current background.
Don't disable shadows thats the purpose of what's below.

I'm also posting my SIMBL app iwith my SmallDropShadows plugin ( well no shadows in fact ) like I also
posted earlier ( I'm doing a complete rewrite of the original code ).
For SIMBL to work you need to:

1. Copy the OSAX bundle into /Library/ScriptingAdditions
2. Copy the SmallDropShadowsSIML.bundle into /Library/Application Support/SIMBL/Plugins ( this folder
does not exists create it )
3. Copy net.culater.SIMBL.Agent.plist to /Library/LaunchAgents
4. reboot

Please try it out. It's not perfect so "be gentle" ;-)

PS. not all apps are configured in the plugin so many apps will continue
to have shadows. I'll keep posting updates to the plugin when I add more stuff/apps

Best regards,
voidRunner

Has anyone revised the beta so that it will support QE/CI and airport on a PowerBook G4 DLSD 1.67 17 inch ? I was told that this works fully with the Quad G5.
