Looks like the unified search bar is moved from top to bottom of the page. This is very nice, since I don’t have to reach to the top for enter URL or search. Very nice for big phones.

Tabs are displayed in grid as well. Much better to navigate than older style.

This remind me so much for older Windows phone.

Glad to hear. Do you notice significant changes in performance with that Apple Private Relay VPN turned on?

I don’t know if it is related with VPN or beta being beta, Safari is very slow on iPhone 7.

So far, beta experience isn’t very bad. Phone is running really hot and performance is subpar. I understand this is beta, so this is something expected.

However, one annoying things about this Safari is all the tool bar functions like refresh, reader mode, translate etc are all in share sheet. If you want to refresh certain webpage, you need tap three dots icon, tap refresh. Just one extra tap, but certainly something I don’t like.

The web version of Instagram won’t load for me in the new Safari on iPad, it goes into a login loop and tries to open the iPad Instagram app which is terrible, but otherwise I do like the new safari, it’s going to take some getting used to having the address bar at the bottom on the phone though. It definitely loads pages faster for me so far.

Which iPad are you using. Safari is struggling with iPhone 7. It is pretty slow.

Refresh is now a pull down, like it is in most apps

As with all major software updates, your phone is likely running hot and slow because it's indexing. Of course, some of this could be attributable to the fact that it's a beta, but know this also happens with public software updates too.

I did complete factory reset. It is running fine right now. I will have to test few more days.

It's good to know the new UI is actually on touch ID phones. I wasn't sure if it would be or not.
I'm hoping I'll like the change. I have an SE 2020, and the phone is too big for my hand and in certain apps like safari I have to reposition it to reach the buttons towards the top of the screen. Perhaps this will remedy that.

It's the worst part of iOS 15.

Cons:
  1. Having a title and footer bar at the top and bottom of the display really makes the web content feel cramped and it seriously clashes against the curved screen edges. It's like using a ported version of a pre-iPhone X app where someone is coloring in the corners to fill out the rest of the display. The old safari was great in that the content felt like it was flowing from the very bottom corners of the display, this new style ruins that illusion. Overall the new title and footer bars reduce the perceived ratio of web content to browser window which is ironically what Apple was trying to optimize for on the new macOS Safari.
  2. There should be a refresh button somewhere easily clickable without needing to delve into the three dot menu. Pull down to refresh is nice but shouldn't be a replacement for a prominent button as a swipe down to refresh action requires losing your scroll position on a page.
  3. The colored title bar is nice when it blends well at the top of a website but once you start scrolling down mostly white pages (like news articles) the colored title bar starts to contrast too much with the page.
  4. The new tab button is not very ergonomic at all for Max/Plus phone users.
  5. Switching from private tabs to regular tabs takes too long.
  6. The central UI controls being at the bottom makes sense but having them jump back up the top again when you want to search for a new site is stupid and not ergonomic.
  7. The icons for favorite websites are way too small.
  8. Tapping on a tab to open it takes way too long (this is a trivial problem to solve)
  9. The three dot menu takes way too long to load. It needs to be instant. I don't have faith Apple will get it to be as fast as it needs to be given how long the share sheet can sometimes take to load.
  10. Apple's private relay is useless until they explain how it works in depth (what content gets sent to Apple, how is the data encrypted, etc.). At the moment it just looks like a VPN.
  11. The browser is slow AF but I guess I'll reserve judgement on that until final release.
Pros:
  1. Swiping on the bottom controls to hop between nearby tabs is super useful, I love this feature.
  2. Tab groups seem useful
  3. Addons will be very interesting but I'm looking forward to seeing how Apple will limit their usefulness.

I’m disappointed that the address bar isn’t at the bottom of the screen on iPad as well. Does it stay at the bottom on landscape mode on iphone?

I agree with this. The footer bar should completely disappear upon scrolling and reappear with a quick flick up or by slightly scrolling up a webpage. Apple should also completely do away with the header bar since it is no longer needed.

Yeah, I really hope they change this. I hate floaters that stick with you while scrolling.

Pull down to refresh is great but not being able to tap the refresh button (with one step) is extremely stupid in my opinion. Most often I want to refresh when at the bottom of the page. (I.e. See a new post on a thread etc)

Is the refresh button hidden on the iPad as well?

I’m not on the beta, so obviously I haven’t tried out the new Safari but I do have quite a few concerns about usability and visibility of controls, especially for those who are less tech savvy than me.

Screens are getting bigger and devices more sophisticated yet it seems everything gets hidden away with each update. The iPad should become more like a computer (whilst retaining its ease of use) instead of hiding every single function under one button/share sheet.

Simple but practical becomes so simple it actually becomes complicated!

Easy fix is either add a pull to refresh at bottom of page, or allow us to drag and drop icons onto main bar like on Mac?

I like the idea of allowing us to drag & drop buttons onto the bar, but I won’t be holding my breath for Apple to allow this!

If you are on the beta please consider providing feedback suggestions to Apple.
