For those with the new emails not showing up without a refresh:
Did you get a new iPhone since iOS 13 came out or are you using the same device you had for iOS 12?
If you’re on a new iPhone, how did you set the new phone up?

I got a brand new iPhone 11. Did NOT restore from backup. Instead I spent half a day installing all my applications from scratch and configuring the phone. Mail still doesn’t refresh.

There is a solution: use outlook (which has its own problems under iOS 13 because iOS overly aggressive memory management unloads outlook from memory if it sits idle in the background for more than a few minutes. When you tap on it, the app has to reload losing where you last were. So don’t leave mail drafts open, always finishing writing them and send them off before exiting outlook or tapping the power button to turn off the screen. The 4GB RAM is completely wasted. Or maybe the camera needs 3GB if it?)

Alternative solution: use your backup iPhone that has iOS 12

Dang I was hoping it had something to do with migrating my old phone to the new one. At least there’s an easy fix for that.

I bought an iPhone 11 in October. Embarrassingly, I can't remember whether I was on iOS 12 or if I went straight to iOS 13.

Either way, I setup the phone as new.

What's your theory?

I was hoping it was a glitch in the migration assistant and setting up as new would fix it. Oh well. I am absolutely amazed that this problem is still there.

Welcome to the new Apple. For issues like this that persist for months, here is Apple’s approach:
First, deny any issues exists - “this is the first time I’ve heard of this issue, so Apple must not be aware.”
Second, escalate to Engineering.
Third, Engineering will ask you to repeat your troubleshooting steps again.
Fourth, after repeating troubleshooting, Engineering will tell you to contact your e-mail provider.
Fifth, after telling Apple everything is working fine everywhere else, they will re-escalate to engineering.
Sixth, repeat steps Three - Five several more times. Seventh, your Senior Advisor will stop responding to you and you’ll return to step One.

Apple has decided that it is better to ignore long-terms bugs than take the time and resources to resolve them. If it can’t be fixed quick, it won’t be fixed at all and Apple will pretend they’ve never heard of the issue you’re experiencing.

There are 3 issues/bugs I have with Mail. (This is with an Outlook.com account.)

  1. If I get a couple of new emails, I always read the top one first then work my way down the list. On my iPhone if I want to keep the email I have just read, if I use the down arrow button within the email to go to the next email then I have to press the down arrow button twice to move to the next email (I only have to press it the once on iPad as per the expected behaviour of the button).
  2. If I empty the bin on the iPad it will show as empty on the iPad (and Outlook.com website), but any email that was in it that had been deleted on the iPhone is still shown in the bin on the iPhone. So if I delete an email on the iPhone, then to permanently delete it I have to delete it from the bin folder on the iPhone. (Edit: to strike through original text as I’ve just had it not work..an email deleted from the inbox on the iPad and subsequently deleted from the bin folder on the iPhone was still showing in the bin on the iPad and had to be deleted from the bin on the iPad to be permanently deleted 🤦🏻‍♂️ Any emails deleted from the inbox on the iPad, and if I subsequently delete from the bin on the iPhone, are properly deleted across all devices as per the expected behaviour.)
  3. The one everybody seems to mention...Despite getting the notification of a new email and the badge count on the app icon, sometimes it won’t be in the list and I have to wait a few seconds for it to appear.
Edit: to also add a number 4. Clicking on a notification banner when it comes opens the Mail app but it’s frozen for a few seconds before you can do anything in the app.

Both devices on 13.3. Other than those issues with Mail, iOS 13 is working well for me (earlier Notes and Reminder syncing issues I was encountering have been resolved).

Edit: Actually one thing that is frustrating, and a regression from iOS 12 is the autocorrect and word suggestions on the Apple default software keyboard.

It's really sad that Apple has come to this. I know your comment is a bit of hyperbole, but the reality is that there is truth to it and having been a user of Apple products for well over a decade I can attest that there are substantially more software bugs now than there used to be. It doesn't "just work" anymore and that's unfortunate.

When my 2nd gen 12.9" iPad stopped working (unresponsive touch issue) I switched to a Windows 2-in-1. It is unbelievable how far Windows has come. It runs so well, I've had virtually no issues. I simply cannot say that for macOS or iOS (and now iPadOS). Apple has some great marketing, but their quality simply doesn't match.

The amount of times I’ve gone into the mail app because it’s showing there are unread emails and then there clearly aren’t is really starting to annoy me. Also it seems the mail app gets to decide if an email you delete is actually deleted.

There’s little incentive for Apple to put a lot of effort in the Mail app. Unlike Messages, FaceTime, AppleTv, etc. that increase lock-in to the Apple ecosystem, Mail is a generic commodity. Similarly theres no reason to invest a lot of effort enhancing apps like calendar, phone, contacts, etc.

Conversely, I had a Surface 4 and switched to an iPad Pro because of how horrible of an experience it was. 😅

I’ve used Windows for decades and it has its fair share of issues.

Restored my iPhone as new without backup. But still the same problems with the mail app. Notification shows me 1 new email, badge says 4. Opening the mail app, 0 new emails.

And later. Notification showed 1 new mail. Opened the app, loaded 5 seconds later. Opened and deleted it again. Badge still showed the 1. Opened the app, the mailbox „Unread“ showed 1, but there was no email.

I gave that app up again. It’s sad that a company like Apple doesn’t care about its own apps.

Fair points. The Surface line-up has improved dramatically since the 4, from what I've read. Windows in the past was definitely problematic, for sure, and people do have issues with 10. My point was that I've been using Windows 10 Pro for over a year and it runs really well for me.

Truth be told, I think the Windows 2-in-1 design is just more appropriate for my workflow. I like to just sit and browse, which I can do in tablet mode, but then flip the keyboard around and start writing, coding, etc. It's a nicer design for what I use, though I admit Windows' tablet mode is pretty anemic.

I had the problem with both iPad (updated from iOS12) and iPhone (restored from iOS 13 backup of old phone).

Recently discovered that some Push settings had become changed to Fetch, perhaps by an update?

All good now. I’m sure this is not the problem for most people, but it might be some.

I've been having the following problems with Mail, consistently:

1. Message previews update erratically
2. Push messaging works erratically
3. Mail threads are buggy
4. Attachments rarely attach to replies
5. Constant 'Unable to compose message' errors
6. Slow performance overall

All of the above should 'just work' in any native Mail app. iOS 13 did not bring any major user-facing changes to warrant breaking the above vs. iOS 12. The fact that I and millions of other beta testers have diligently reported the above bugs (+ many others), and they are still not fixed, is simply unacceptable. I hope Apple's software department redeems itself with iOS 14 and the next version of macOS (Catalina has been quite rocky as well).

Judging by how absolutely garbage iOS, WatchOS, Catalina and HomePodOS can be with their myriad bugs, I don’t hold out much hope.

This warranted a separate post as this occurred for the first time on 13.3.1.

Once I’m home, I check work emails on my phone. Woke up this morning a little surprised to not see any new emails. Got into work, and there were 10 new emails and still nothing on my phone. Had to restart my phone to get the Mail app working again.

This is unforgivable - please get your **** together Federighi and crew.

Well, looks like Apple have been hard at work with the Mail app in 13.4 b1. The app is mostly working for me - new icons in the drawer at the bottom of an open email:

Drawer1.png

Wasn't this how the drawer was in iOS 12, or am I imagining things? Now all they have to do is actually fix the actual problems with the app. Ugh.

Well, in the darkness of 13.3.1, a spot of light can be seen. I just tested the Reminders issue where P
previously if you amend a reminder on your Mac it didn't sync across to your I device. With 13.3.1 this process now works. It's very slow to.sync across from Mac to I device, but it does work.
The above comment strikes as now it isn't working again!!! Something seriously is wrong with Apple. Dare I say it, it's gone rotten!!!

And guess what??? Reminders are syncing again!!! But for how long before it breaks again, who knows!!!!

Maybe the server-side had a hitch-up there? If you didn't update or anything, I guess iOS isn't to blame here.

Possibly. But this is an o going thing. It wasn't working before. It's is today. Chances are it won't work this afternoon. But will tomorrow for a few days. And then fail again...... This has been happen ING since ios 13

Keep an eye on it - and if there are problems, you could give direct feedback to Apple. There's always a chance that it keeps working now :)
