Phone is settled down but then the weird animation stutters randomly creep in, apps launch slower.

I honestly cannot stomach this sort of regression in a one year old phone. I'm scrambling to get back to iOS 8 and hope my back up is going to work.

iOS 8 was a mess on launch too and I think this about my last rodeo with an iPhone. Way too expensive for this sort of nonsense.

I always wait until the ".2" version. 9.0 is still a beta version, basically.

I also make sure to do a clean install going 1 full upgrade higher (like 8 -> 9).

I don't like how they do this, either, but that's the deal.

the same here...

in addition, i'm a bit off topic... but where is the ios 9 wallpaper seen in all the preview pictures? they also removed older wallpapers...

Ah, the removal of features and content, Apple's favorite thing to do.

This is why I don't upgrade my Apple products anymore unless something forces me to, or there is a really really good reason.

So you never even used iOS 7, or 6, or 5 (since they never went past x.1)?

I updated my 4S, and I was mostly pleased with it. I loved the new font, and the additional lag wasn't too bad, aside from spotlight where it would literally hang for a second or two. The reason why I downgradedis because the battery drain was quite extreme, and it'd burn through the battery in a few hours, even on standby.

What iPhone are you running it on? I haven't noticed any lag on my iPhone 5.
My iPhone 5 is very laggy, Apple music will pause after 1-2 seconds playing. It just took 43ish seconds to open the Setting page. I would say that is laggy. First time I regret updating iOS.

Just downgraded to iOS 8.4.1 and I am surprised how much quicker it feels. I thought maybe iOS 9 did get quicker as I used it, but I think it was just my brain calibrating to the delays. Also, it seems like Touch ID is substantially faster in iOS 8.4.1.

I noticed the same thing with Touch ID. and it is faster. Try comparing it to two iPhone 6 side by side, one running 9 , the other 8.4.1

So we get new iPhones coming out with faster touch sensors and an iOS that slows down the older ones

iPhone 6+ here....

I can sense a lag even with the new update today. Nothing to complain about, but it does have some choppiness to it.

Such as:

  • Unlocking with Touch ID
  • Swiping left to search screen
  • Opening camera
  • Switching from front to back camera or vice versa
  • Switching from picture to video mode

Exciting to compare this to the 6s+ in a few weeks. I really think iOS 9 is meant for 2 GB RAM.

Again, it's not making my 6s seem worthless or a dinosaur, but it's noticeable to me.

iPhone 5 VERY smooth... it doesn't seem a 3 years old device, really!

ipad air 2 seems slower... how is it possible?!?
It is really impressive and sad, because while using my iphone 5 on iOS 9.1 is simply smooth with no lag at all and BETTER than iOS 8, my 6+ on 9.1 is just sad, laggy app switcher... I don't know why!

Just finished downgrading my iPhone.

Safari is snappier. :D

But really though everything is just a bit quicker. I'm going to wait around for iOS to iron out the bugs and for my applications to update.

For my Ipad Air, task switching was extremely slow and laggy after the upgrade. I read some suggestions from this thread that gave me the idea of disabling the dynamic moving bubble background from the home screen, and now task switching is perfect again. Worth a try if you have dynamic backgrounds enabled.

Just got my 6S and with dynamic bubble wallpaper, app switcher is slightly choppy. So yeah....its an iOS 9 issue like most of us figured. Even get some control center choppiness still here and there. Sloppy sloppy sloppy.

Soooo is 9.0.2 all good? Is it safe to upgrade again? I'm worried because you're not able to downgrade back to iOS 8 anymore....

I downgraded back to iOS 8.4.1 just in time before apple stopped signing it. I have an iPhone 6 and was for the longest trying to convince my self the battery life might be better, the iOS 9 isn't choppy, etc. Downgraded and everything literally sped up, battery life back to normal, no choppiness anywhere. So glad I did in time!

This is ridiculous... After updating to 9.0.2 my iPhone 5s is still laggy, especially with the task switcher. Holding it side by side with my friend's iPhone 5 with the same 9.0.2 and the same task switcher open, I can see that her phone works perfectly smooth. Although, obviously, her model is a year older. Introducing random buggy states to their new OS is no good of Apple.

Also, interestingly, you guys seemed to be downgrading back to 8.4.1 almost a week after the downgrade window closed for me here in Austria. I was so eager to downgrade after I noticed all the lags, but no luck...

My iPhone 5s but especially my iPad mini2 are very laggy especially when i need to type something i have to press twice in the area where i want to type and then it takes ages before the keyboard shows. I do get the copy/paste icons right away but no keyboard that takes a bit longer. Very awfull behaviour. Both are running iOS9.0.1. I hope the 9.1 version will be much more smoother.

See this is what I'm talking about. I almost upgraded to 9.0.2 last night. Luckily I held off!

I did originally upgrade to 9.0 and had the lag and stuttering between the card view and search pulldown screen so I reverted back to 8.4.1 the next day. Now that 8.4.1 is long gone I am so hesitant to upgrade. I could have sworn that people said 9.0.2 fixes all of that but by the sounds of it from the last couple of comments, it doesn't.

I can honestly say in other news, El Capitan is freaking glorious. Upgraded my 2014 Macbook Pro and 2013 27" iMac and couldn't be happier! Everything works like a charm!

Is it possible to downgrade if I have the main 8.4.1 files? I downloaded that the other week in order to downgrade through itunes.... Is that possible or does apple have to actually support the downgrade for it to happen?

Not anymore. Apple just stopped signing 8.4.1 a couple of days ago.

Future note: when a new version comes out, you have at most a week or so to downgrade before it's never possible anymore (unless some sort of downgrade tool comes out, which is very unlikely).

My 5s was buttery smooth on IOS 9.0 through 9.0.2.

Why would you honestly care if the task switcher is a little laggy? I found I needed to get used to the task switcher in IOS 9 and I liked the old IOS 6 way rather than the task switcher worked. But I didn't really have an inherent problem with lagginess or stutter.

Because this is the place where the lag is most prominent. Other interactions lag as well, sometimes more, sometimes less. Anyway, my phone is now not even close to the smoothness and snappiness of 8.4.1.

By the way, good to know for sure that there are users with positive experience also on 5s.
