the GT 610 is a Fermi card no Kepler version exists

the Fermi cards do seem to work in Mojave but im not sure how support will be going forward. System Profiler reports them as supporting metal but I have heard other reports of them not actually showing up under Metal applications...

if your looking for a nice cheap Kepler card that will for sure support Metal I recommend looking up a list of Kepler cards and sorting by low end first and having a look around and seeing whats what

the NVIDIA GPU drivers will work with most PC cards these days Be it GeForce, Quadro or NVS, im surprised MVC has not made some GT 710 Mac editions those could be quite popular....

Maybe the trick with the Nvidia cards is to cross-reference Kepler arch. and Vukan API, and NOT just to go by the branded number.
... from reading these boards I gather that you could start somewhere around a GTX 680 / HD 7990 / R9 280X for basic use and go up from there.

To “go up from there” might not work if you score a GT 730 that happens to have Fermi, but after that seems to be pretty safe for getting Keppler or the later Maxwell and Pascal arch. But maybe not as far as a Titan V Founder’s Edition if you’re splurging ;).

If true, you could even start with a GT 630, IF you get the right one: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Nvidia_graphics_processing_units

Would be interesting to know if the cutoff for Metal 2.0 is Vulcan 1.1, in which case GT 1030 thru 1080 and Titan would be the way to go for Nvidia cards?

Would a Firepro W7000 work?

I could only guess, if my logic about Vulkan API support for Nvidia cards holds up, then an AMD W7000 and its ilk might work: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_AMD_graphics_processing_units.

But Mohave might need a later version of Vulkan, 1.1 or whatever comes after this, to support GCN 3rd generation and later.

You might already know that drivers for workstation cards aren’t optimized for gaming tho, but if you’re like me and don’t use your 5,1 for that, it might keep you up and running for the basics in Mohave :)

If I figure out a way to make it fit in the MP I'll try it and report back. Looks like I may need to hacksaw part of the metal bracket off it - too long to fit in the case.

Are the current Nvidia cards (1050ti,1060,1070,1080) metal capable and should therefore work with mojave? Of course the boot screen will probably be black...

I have the 1060 and it doesn't work, due to no Nvidia web driver. I backslid to a GTX680 2G Which does work, shows a boot screen and shows as Metal compatible. HDMI audio doesn't work though (it does in High Sierra)...

I think the GTX680 is flashed Mac and the 1060 isn't.

I used by to GT120 to do the firmware update FYI.

I installed an RX 460 I pulled from a PC. So far seems to work. No boot screens, of course. Went with it as low power for a modern card. No drivers, hassle free so far.

I am running a RX 560 myself (4GB MSI Areo) - low power & I picked it up for $100.

Hi,

please excuse me if I say anything stupid here but I can't claim to really know what I'm doing and I've been struggling with this issue for a long time looking for a solution. Your post seems to match my setup so I'm hoping you can help me.

I'm running a 2010 Mac Pro 5,1 with a GTX680 (non Mac version not flashed) with Sierra. I cannot complete the upgrade to High Sierra as it keeps telling me to perform the Firmware Upgrade in a restart but that just keeps looping.

I decided to give the GTX680 flash a try but of course I only have that GPU so I can never access the screen before boot up. Is my only option to buy something like a GT120 and stick it in there so I can get the boot screen to perform the flash?

Or am I missing something silly?

This is the upgrade video I'm following:

Thanks.

For the firmware update that's in 10.13.6, you must have a proper Mac graphics card installed.

I do keep a Radeon 5870 and a GT120 around just for that purpose. Both for High Sierra and for Mojave there is a firmware update that must be applied. I did swap in the 5870 to do the firmware updates.

I would looks around the thrift stores or eBay if need be, but these shouldn't be $?

Thanks guys. At least I was somewhat on the right track.

Sourcing those from the bottom of Africa is slightly harder but not impossible. Are those the best two options?

Just flash your GTX 680 with eVGA GTX 680 Mac edition firmware.

These were the lowest powered GPU'S supporting Metal:
  • ATI Radeon HD 5770 from Mac Pro (Mid 2012)
  • NVIDIA GeForce GT 640M (aka: GK107 N13P-LP) from iMac (21-inch, Late 2012

I have HD5770 but I can't even run Fortnite as it says I need Metal Supported graphic.

That's the path I'm trying to follow however I'm not sure how to do that when the GTX680 is the only card; the video I'm following requires the FW update to be done after booting into DOS and my card cannot display anything before booting into MacOS it seems.

Is there a way to do the FW update from within Sierra?

Hi, I'm interested to buy a Metal supported VGA card but don't wanna spend too much. I know what cards support Metal but the main question is if I bought a non Mac edition card, would it work with my Mac Pro Mid 2010?

Lots of PC graphics cards "work", you just don't get any boot screens.

I keep getting prompts to update to Mojave, which is puzzling because Apple’s support page says my HD5870 is not Metal-capable.

Am I missing something or is this simply an oversight by Apple?
