Edit : To say that it's magically working again after many retries.

I'm planning to install the new developer beta or public beta (if it will be released one day :D ) but I'm not sure, I read about a lot of bugs... maybe it's better to wait.

I'm using carbon copy cloner, so I can switch back to a previous cloned boot/Catalina without loose anything but...... I don't want to waste time in trying something full of bugs :)

I hate to see Apple is lagging behind the Mac but i prefer to have a solid desktop system because it's more important than the new (nice) UI.

If they could just fix the watchdog kernel panic on reboot/shutdown that would be great. I would love to be able to shutdown my machine gracefully again.
Whats watch dog anyway?

If you are considering that NOW, this late in the game I would suggest to wait. I've run previous macOS betas from time to time, and right now IMHO Catalina is "good enough" vs. what Big Sur brings. Back when Mavericks was Beta, I ran that because power management was SO much better, but IMHO we don't have any major, major drawcard like that in Big Sur for existing hardware.

It's likely to drop any day now and there's no guarantee that the GM will upgrade properly over a previous beta. Also various apps may break until they're updated for Big Sur.

I get it, you want the shiny, but unless you're prepared to do two or more wipe/reinstalls (if things don't go perfectly) in the next month or so I'd hold off until the release.

Oh it's gonna be a beta alright, just with a public release build. :)

Apple has been doing extended beta (public) testing every year for the last few Mac OS releases and Big Sur would be nothing new.

Remember when Apple would release an OS every few years ?

That was cool.

That was a time I could restart without a kernel panic.

I wrote to the executive office. Right now it’s a ****ing cluster**** of an OS.

FWIW, for me this has been 100% associated with those 3rd party applications that want to install drivers (.kext) in Library /Extensions. This then consistently creates the Security & Privacy error as shown & prevents installing other software that requires the security preference pane, ie, pretty much everything, eg:

Say, a recovery re-install & TM migration, or setup of a new login account - every single installed app needs to be opened and security permissions verified, over and over for each app. This does not necessarily require the Security pane - can be permissions to access documents, camera, microphone etc - but for drivers & full disk access, always the security pane.

I also found that those extensions which may have been installed in error cannot be removed while logged into any Big Sur account (permission denied). The only way to remove them is by re-booting into Catalina, finding the .kext in the Big Sur 'update' disk & deleting it from there. When booting back into Big Sur, the security preference pane error is then gone.

Big Sur has changed the requirements for these drivers & so will need to be re-written by many vendors. Instead of being located at Library /Extensions this is now at Library /System Extensions.

I always wait till the first point release before upgrading to a newly released OS. Big Sur seems to be particularly buggy at this stage.

I am still having a hard time to think about upgrading on my Mac Pro 5,1. Runs Catalina nicely with SIP turned on. Watch unlock works.
I have Big Sur working (without unlock since I want to keep the security), but I am not sure it has enough oomph to drop Watch Unlock and deal with that freaking menu bar and overly LOUD UI. The Mail UX is also worse. A downward trend since Mojave.

I've always installed macOS .0 releases and never regretted it. I've only encountered minor bugs that later get fixed and don't break anything major for me.

Perhaps it's also because I maximize use of built-in apps, Apple's macOS apps & 3rd party apps that stay up-to-speed with new macOS releases (publishing their software via the macOS App Store seems to be a good indicator).

Part of the reason though I have not encountered major issues others report is likely because I don't tweak the UI, override protections, nor rely on software from the likes of Adobe, Microsoft, etc. big companies who tend to drag their feet when it comes to making their software fully compatible.

Well I have used MS Office through out the beta trials and all is well. Now, Adobe...., that's another story. I had issues with Adobe apps in Catalina.

Thanks, thats very interesting, I did have one (non-Apple) kext in /Library/Extensions, an FTDI driver which was only adhoc-signed. I checked the manufacturers website and there's an updated driver :
"v2.4.4 (26th May 2020)
- updated signing certificates and notarizing of dmg package"

It's still placing it in /Library/Extensions, but I'll see if this fixes the issue later today.

Well currently the App Store is currently broken for me (and others), so maybe Big Sur is coming today/tomorrow?
Wouldn't count on it. I think this will be a macOS release with at least 10 betas, not releasing until a Mac with Apple Silicon is announced. - I'd like to note that you still cannot switch between 12 and 24 hour clocks. That's such a basic thing missing - it's not ready for prime-time

What is your logic around that? In the past, Apple released macOS about a month after iOS.

The GM of iOS released on the day of the event when the iPad Air was revealed. The public release only the day after. Rumor suggests an Apple event on October 13th, probably including at the very least a hint at Apple Silicon Macs - GM that day release anywhere between a day to a week later depending on whether they learned their lesson at the frustration with how little time there was between 14GM and 14 public
