Having looked at most peoples photos of their new watches, I’m happy you’re all liking them but I think the majority won’t. Wearing a 49mm watch in this day and age is ABSURD unless you’re in the SAS or completely ripped and your arms are massive. Right now I’m seeing these watches just overtaking peoples wrists to the point it is comical, sorry but I think they just look awful.
I understand that you need more screen real estate to swipe and have apps etc, but the concept of apps and other add ons all integrated into a watch to a watch purist like myself doesn’t sit right with me at all. It’s gimmicky as hell and that’s why I’ll always stick with Rolex or JLC for my watches as they actually know how to make a proper watch
Im not alone in this thought either, below is a picture of someone with a 45mm apple Watch and the top comment is “looks like you have an iPad mini on your wrist” which is a perfect description, and the new ultra is 4mm bigger ! 😆😆
Just ridiculous honestly and Apple should be really contemplating who makes their decisions because most people would never sign off on a watch that big.

Hahahaha. I see your sarcasm here. I also wish it was 53mm instead of 49mm.

Glad I have no tastes as I would not want to be caught dead wearing that ugly thing!
There's is no accounting for taste but that JLC is a $12,000 watch and most watch aficionados would agree that is a lovely and desirable dress watch. I would love to own it. The Ultra is not comparable in any sense as it is actually a sports watch. So, if you do not wear formal attire or suits professionally, I can see you not wanting this piece.

We are quite different as I would not call any Watch “lovely”!

People complain about the “form over function” preference. This is not a laptop or a phone, it’s a watch, something to wear. You can’t translate your tech ideas in something you should wear. In this case, form is ESSENTIAL. Regarding the Ultra, if you have a big wrist I think it’s a good looking watch, but it’s “sporty” and I wouldn’t wear it with a suit.

That person got pretty small wrists - looks like my <10 year old son wearing a 45mm apple watch. Also, it's not really about screen size - the ultra's display is less than 2% larger than the regular watch.

This is not an old-school wristwatch for watch-nerds, it's a computer on your wrist. Although it might make more sense to make those in a landscape formate until they become obsolete because of AR-glasses anyway.

It's o.k., if "watch-purists" don't like it, it's not made for you, because it would not make sense financially.

Design is very subjective, what one person likes another will dislike.
Otherwise we would all wear the same, have same kitchen, drive same car etc.

Before I started wearing an Apple Watch I was alternating between Victorinox and Tag Heuer watches. And they were the larger models.
I also used a Garmin for running.
Even if I’d had the money the JLC shown here would not have been my style.

Since buying my Series 6 44mm I have worn my Apple Watch all the time for work, casual and running. I simply used different straps/bands for different situations.
Now I have the Ultra I will use that for as all occasions and activities.

I think the key is that an Apple Watch does not compare directly to a traditional mechanical watch, they are very different.
But what Apple has done (along with others) is to disrupt the market.
I think one area Apple got very right with its Apple Watch concept is the attachment of straps/bands, it is way simpler to personalise your Apple Watch than with many traditional watches. Maybe not a feature for some, but key to many.

So I would not compare my Ultra to a mechanical watch, nor indeed would I compare it to a dedicated sports Watch like a Garmin.

I noticed one problem with your sizing guide. It features round watches, so the size of the watch is wide as it is high. The Apple Watch ultra seems to be taller than it is wide.

When you’re measuring the screen, it’s diagonal so even if it was a narrow screen, because it’s so tall that number is going to be higher. I’m not sure how much of a factor this is with the Apple Watch Ultra, but it is a factor.

I agree with you that it looks ridiculous on people with tiny wrists but I don’t think that’s new with the Apple Watch Ultra. I’ve seen it with mechanical watches. I personally will stick with the smaller of the regular Apple Watches but that’s because I’ve never liked a heavy watch. Even with a traditional watch, I would pick one that was lightweight.

I can't explain the visual illusions and distortion that cameras make when taking a picture of your wrist head on but suffice it to say in "real life" the watches do not look nearly as large as in most close up photos, nor take up nearly as much of the wrist. I'm not saying the Ultra isn't large, it is a large watch. I'm not saying there won't be a significant number of folks who will perfer a smaller and less expensive Apple Watch in a 45mm or 41mm size, there will be. I'm just saying coming here to pass judgement and pretend to know what the "majority" will like is just as distorted a vision of reality as some of these photos of wrists. See you in a few years when you end up buying one for yourself.

I think that people who wear such things while wearing a suit or other formal wear know that it looks absurd but just do not care about their appearance (a regrettable trend in America) . . .

People not caring about their appearance is actually a human problem, and humans exist all over the world, not just in America 😉

Well, if you do not like watches than why comment? Or are you just making a snippy remark about my word choice? Elaborate -- that is why you have a keyboard.

Just because they wouldn't use the adjective "lovely" to describe a watch doesn't mean they don't like watches. Maybe they just think the word is too strong. For example, many Germans think it's odd that Americans and other English speakers commonly say that they "love" inanimate objects (e.g. "I just love my new car"). In German, that word (lieben) is more exclusively reserved for human relationships. I'm sure it's the same in some other languages. So maybe that's where they're coming from 🤷🏼‍♂️

What a silly thread. The watch is great, and designed for ruggedness and the outdoors. Function over form in this case.

If you want form prioritized, there’s the Apple Watch 8. (Though I do hope the action button and loud siren and night red mode makes its way to the normal Apple Watch, as I would prefer the look of the 8 over the Ultra since I’m in the office most days, and only exploring on short hikes where the 8 is just fine)

I'm sorry Apple put you in that position of having to make a mandatory purchase. They should really make the Apple Watch an optional buy - that way people could choose whether to purchase it themselves based on their own tastes.

We can only hope that in the future we'll have that flexibility.

Thanks for highlighting this important issue. I look forward to your other insights.

Nice strawman argument! It happens in almost every thread but I think this one was particularly good.

But thankfully I have taste View attachment 2081662
The fact he likes this and doesn’t like the Ultra explains it all. Not saying this is bad (I wouldn’t wear it) but they’re poles apart style wise so I can see why someone would like one and not the other. What I don’t get are the weird need to aggressively defend your tastes. Very odd.
