I wear a 45mm Apple Watch Series 6. It's not far off from the size of the Ultra that being 49mm. It looks fine size-wise. You're probably too used to smol watches.
Big difference in the wearability of a 45 mm and a 49 mm especially since most cannot wear a 45 mm without it already being too large for the wrist. That said, I am sure that someone like Andre the Giant could pull off the 49 mm without issue.

Yes everyone follows a prescribed diagram for sizing a watch to their wrist. Thanks OP. Thank god I fit within it!

I would like the battery life of the ultra -but I don't like the way it looks and don't have a need for the other things it does. It is hard not to get swept up in the excitement of something new. But honestly it makes no difference to me what other people want to wear on their wrists -the people that have the ultra seem to like it which is all that matters when they spend their own money.

But thankfully I have taste View attachment 2081662
what does that picture "proof" other than you found a picture of that watch online?
And, I am sure that nice watch would fare well when I'm going mountain biking for 2 hrs or go for a swim,,,

another post about "taste", an extremely subjective subject that does nothing but stirring controversial discussion, no-one is wrong snf no-one is right

My wife has a S4 38mm. I think it would look silly on my wrist. I am a bigger guy at 6'2" 240 lbs, the Ultra seems to fit me fine. Here is a quick picture from this morning:

Looking at this photo I can't help thinking:

1) it's probably too large for any wrist
2) if it's got to be rectangular, at least make it landscape rather than portrait 🤣
3) by God how ugly and illegible Apple watch faces are

Tastes are opinions, inherently subjective. I support OPs ability to have theirs, but care exactly 0% about the specifics.

Wearing a 49mm watch in this day and age is ABSURD unless you’re in the SAS or completely ripped and your arms are massive.

Really? I think given that the Ultra is trying to get into the sports watch market more solidly, I don't think the Ultra is that big at all. It's practically comparable in size to many Garmins, if not even a bit smaller than some.

No offense, but I have to say it looks quite ridiculous size-wise in that photo.

It is smaller than my arm, you can clearly see in the picture that my arm is above and below the extended part of the links... So, you would prefer that I use a watch that is too small for my size?

Edit, my 6-digit Submariner is just as thick as this watch, and not much smaller lug to lug.

I love when people

A. Think they’re experts in fashion and/or style
B. Think fashion and/or style must conform to a one-size-fits-all global standard
C. Speak of how people “should” or “ought to” look and/or present themselves, as if there is some moral imperative associated with fashion/and or style

I find that these sentiments are often strongest in members of particularly unmarginalized groups, as they’ve never been forced to exist as something that has been considered not conventionally desirable. It’s no surprise that with this lack of experience also comes a lack of imagination, open-mindedness, and creativity.

You are absolutely allowed to not like any device, we all have different likes and dislikes.
And I can see why the Ultra may divide peoples opinion.

But for me whilst I really liked my Series 6 44mm AW it always felt a little small.
Having been used to wearing the larger Victorinox and Tag watches 44mm seemed a little small.
For me the Ultra takes me to size that is much more appealing.
Having worn my Ultra since delivery on Fri 23rd Sept I am very pleased with it.

Whilst the size charts are interesting they do not take into account personal preference and tastes.
I think the right size is whatever a person feels comfortable with.
I do not expect everyone to like my choice, but equally I respect others choices.

The screen is really useful in daily use, and great for my running and other workouts.
But as I say, it is your right and privilege to not like it. It is great that we can agree to disagree without falling out over it. :)👍

Agree 100%. Why worry about others? Just don't buy it.

You appear to have a larger wrist than most people, the 44 sits nicely on your wrist in that photo . I’d still say the 49mm would be too big but your probably be able to wear it better than most
The Watch in the picture is the Ultra.
