Been using Sparrow+ for sometime now with no issues. Went to update today and i've run into this issue:

Image

Sparrow+ stays in my Changes Tab as if it stills needs to be updated. Every time, same thing.

And now my Push Notifications no longer work.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried removing Sparrow+ and reinstalling? Also, which version are you using? Be sure to grab the one from FreeManRepo (http://freemanrepo.com/repo), not BigBoss.

As you can see from the image I posted, I am installing it from the devs repo. Uninstalling and reinstalling results in the same error.

I am trying to install the latest Sparrow+ 1.3 (which is also found in the image) for the latest Sparrow 1.3.

This isn't an issue with any of that, it's an issue with package conflicts.

After more research, it looks like its an issue with how the dev compiled the .deb. I've contacted him.

*EDIT: The dev has yet to get back to me, but I've found a workaround:

Using iFile (or iFunbox/SSH, etc) navigate to

/var/lib/dpkg/info

Find and open

com.furiousmod.furiousmod.list

in a text editor. Remove any line that mentions "DS_Store".

Save the file.

Install Sparrow+!

Is it just me or is this tweak temperamental? Sometimes I'll get a notification within a minute or two of when the email was received, but sometimes it will be 10 minutes late or not show up at all. If it normally takes a while then that's fine, it's just that right now I feel like I'm doing something wrong as all the videos I've seen show the notification coming in immediately. I've already tried uninstalling and reinstalling the tweak as well as the app itself multiple times but still no luck, Sparrow settings have the Push option checked and the app does show up in my notification center settings. A little warning, I'm kind of a n00b when it comes to this stuff so I probably just missed something really obvious, but any help would be greatly appreciated. Also it is Sparrow 1.3 and the tweak is the 1.3-1 version from the developer's repo.

As soon as I installed it, the Push functionality stopped working, and resumed right after removing it. I'll have to give it another shot, I guess.

Sparrow+ seems quite buggy to me

It worked after first install although every time I respiring I get the welcome to Sparrow+ notification

Then after a few hours it stopped pushing, then pushed intermittently for the next couple of days, till I got fed up with it and reverted back to the mail app

The Apple Mail app is working fine and push is back to being reliable again

Same here man. Good effort by the dev but push feature is very inconsistent. For native mail app try a tweak called Mail Enhancer Pro. Improves and adds lacking features in mail app.

Yea I installed the trial after you mentioned it earlier

and I have since purchased it and I agree with you it is a nice addition to the native app,

I need reliable notifications all the time and the Native mail app gives me that,

And now I can see at a glance using the account colours, which account the mail is in, this really helps me identify the general emais from my personal ones

Always transferring purchase?

Anyone notice that with Sparrow+ 1.3, iTunes wants to transfer it back to itself (as if it was a new app) with every sync?

For me - until Sparrow gets Exchange access - it is hard for me to switch over and use it as my default email client. Currently it annoys me trying to use two email clients.

Push is very inconsistent for me as well on 1.3. Anyone else notice the dev has removed Sparrow+ 1.3 from his repo? I wanted to reinstall the tweak, but I don't want to permanently remove it.

I noticed a big hit on battery life when I set Sparrow+ to push. Even on fetch my battery life was dropping fairly rapidly (I had a tough time making it through a whole day on a charge). I guess it's back to stock mail until Sparrow can release an update.

From what I've seen the drain is due to how Sparrow+ gets push notifications. It uses the same protocol as programs like Skype. While many say it should not use more battery than an exchange email account in my experience it does. This is probably why Apple wouldn't let the Sparrow developers use it. I will continue to use Sparrow+ but hope The Sparrow devs include push notifications without the fee...that is childish.

What is childish? The fact that a developer tried to include a feature for free, with Apple's help, but was denied, so now has to come up with an alternative, costly (to them) method to provide said feature?

How is a fee childish? Push notifications have to be done through Sparrow's end because of Apple's refusal to grant them VoIP background status privileges. Servers cost money to setup and maintain.

Same here. Normally I would lose 1-2% overnight but when I previously had Sparrow+ installed, I would see between 18-23% decrease during the same time span.

This, along with push mail being so damn inconsistent, is why I went back to native mail. I love Sparrow Mail but unless it's gets TRUE default + push features, it's nothing more than a virtual paperweight.

On this point I have to agree with Apple, assuming their reason for not letting the Sparrow team to use the VoIP push method is the hit to batter life. When there is poor battery life with an iPhone Sparrow will not be held to blame if the app includes it as released from the App Store, Apple will be held to blame. In this case they would be blamed for something which is not their issue, something the developer could have controlled for.

As for Sparrow charging a fee for push notifications. Setting up servers isn't as expensive as it used to be, they can use a cloud solution, from Amazon for example, that is very cheap for a solution. Perhaps part of the issue here is the perception of a monthly fee. If Sparrow is running on enough of a shoe string that they can absorb the cost of push notifications then they should just increase the cost of the app to cover the expense. It is much easier for people to absorb/understand that over a monthly fee to be notified of emails on your iDevice.

Oh, when I say childish perhaps I should have said immature from a business perspective. Because, as long as they are charging us for the program they are in business. They need to be mature from a business perspective, hence my recommendation above.

It sounds weird how the tone of the letter comes off like, "We're going to be busy with all sorts of cool projects at Google now, and don't have time for any Sparrow nonsense anymore."

Purely sarcastic, but that's the vibe I get.

I'm still running 1.2 for Sparrow, it works great with Sparrow+ and I see no reason to upgrade.

However, if Google was smart, they would do the following

A) Remake Sparrow into the official Gmail app

B) Port it to Android

C) Continue the iOS releases.

However, it doesn't look like they're going to do that, which is sad.

I bet Google does use the Sparrow team to make a new email client. They know email clients better then Google does. I just hope they give the Sparrow guys free rein to create a great experience.

I just purchased Sparrow today and installed Sparrow+ with Sparrow push. Did I waste my money? I like the app but can't get any notifications to work.
