All these companies really are just this ballsy nowadays aren’t they? Years ago, a company would have wrapped a price increase in something like „now with Spotify HiFi“ or something like that but nope, now they just do it (yearly).
F that
I have seen no scientific evidence that anyone can discern the difference between CD quality stereo audio and higher than CD quality stereo audio.Artists such as Kayne West and Jay Z did start their own streaming service. It's called Tidal and they were one of the first to offer high-quality audio (which Spotify still doesn't do in 2024).
And Spotify is a joke. Demanding more expensive prices but not offering lossless audio like the others. And these guys are still the dominate market player with an inferior product. So these guys were not hindered by the App Store at all like what they claim to be.
This increase is most likely to compensate for the CTF Spotify will be required to pay when they start distributing the app on alternative app stores.
Then Spotify can complain to the EU that they needed to raise prices because of Apple's "anticompetitive practices". And the merry-go-round will go merrily around again and again.
One buck here, one buck there, and suddenly you have less on your plate.WOW...up a buck. Funny how much people spend going out to eat/drink for a couple hours and don't think twice about it but bitch about $1 increase for listening to music for a whole month.
Why shouldn’t they? Why should Apple pay more to artists, because they make money making phones?
Spotify has seen a minus result for years. It is not subscription money that keeps them afloat, it is venture capital money. Recently they had to lay off almost 20% employee's as they need to pay for the office space at 4 WTC.Spotify's senior executives have done the math's and worked out they are not getting paid enough so need to increase the price of subscriptions.
If the company has been making a loss for years, which senior executives have been fired because of it? If they layed off 20% of the workforce, how many of the senior executives are part of that 20%? I bet none of them. Therefore my point still stands.Spotify has seen a minus result for years. It is not subscription money that keeps them afloat, it is venture capital money. At this point, why are you all still paying for Spotify?
1) They pay amongst the worst rates in the industry.
2) Apple Music offers more features like spatial / lossless audio and has its own classical music app, plus it's better integrated with Apple devices.
3) They are flushing money down the toilet via numerous questionable business decisions, from their free tier (a loss leader) to their foray into advertising to bankrolling controversial figures like Joe Rogan.
4) The Spotify app has now become a catch-all for services including podcasts and audiobooks, meaning users who don't care for them are essentially subsidising these services for those who do. Contrast this with the Apple Music app, which remains focused on streaming and nothing else.
If I were Apple, I would stick with their current pricing, and slowly starve Spotify out.
Everything keeps going up with streaming, food, etc. It has to stop and the only way to do it is stop buying the subscription music or streaming services. You can’t just keep going along.WOW...up a buck. Funny how much people spend going out to eat/drink for a couple hours and don't think twice about it but bitch about $1 increase for listening to music for a whole month.
In that case, why bill US customers for a tax that’s only going to apply to subscribers in the EU?
Streaming only exist because the music industry needed an answer against piracy. And streaming effectively killed piracy because it is more convenient then pirating for a small price to pay.
However if it is no longer a small price to pay, these streaming services are no longer the solution against piracy and people will go back to pirating.
These streaming services will soon find this out the hard way.

I think it’s more about the fact that everything seems to go up a buck quite often. This is Spotify’s second increase in 12 months?WOW...up a buck. Funny how much people spend going out to eat/drink for a couple hours and don't think twice about it but bitch about $1 increase for listening to music for a whole month.
Apple Music has much better quality than CD.if the pricing of streaming keeps going up I hope it drives people back to physical media.
Interesting. One of my pieces has been streamed over 73,000 times. For that I’ve been paid $1.60. If I’d sold a comparable number of singles out of my trunk, I could have earned about $36,000. IMO, it’s a trade-off. There are only so many venues at which a musician can perform. Streaming allows me to reach millions of people in dozens of countries, something I previously couldn’t do. What I’ve given up for that opportunity is profit.Spotify keeps 30% of the earnings. 70% goes to the rights holders. The rights holders can be the artists themselves depending on the deals they make, the record labels, songwriters, the producers... So for 10.000 streams the owner of the rights get 40 Euros. Which is not much, but comparable for someone selling demo tapes out of his trunk, like an artist who has not made it yet.
Are they paying any more to artists?
Spotify today announced that it is increasing Premium plan pricing in the United States in order to "bring users the best experience."
![]()
The Individual Premium plan is now priced at $11.99, up from $10.99. Duo is priced at $16.99 (up $2), Family is priced at $19.99 (up $3), and Student is priced at $5.99 (no change).
This is actually the second time Spotify has raised prices in the last 12 months. In July 2023, the Premium plan price went from $9.99 to $10.99, so there has been a 20 percent increase in the last year. Prior to the July 2023 increase, Duo was priced at $12.99 and the Family plan was priced at $15.99, marking a 31 percent total increase for Duo and a 25 percent increase for Family after the 2024 price hikes.
Spotify subscribers will soon be seeing emails notifying them of the upcoming price increase. Emails will include instructions on how to cancel a Premium subscription.
At $11.99 and $19.99, respectively, the Spotify Premium and Family plans are now more expensive than the equivalent Apple Music plans. Apple's Individual plan is priced at $10.99 per month, while the Family plan is priced at $16.99 per month.
