It makes you wonder: what is the difference in cost between a live action show, a 2D animation show, and a CGI composed show. If the CGI show is cheaper than, say, a live action show, then it makes you wonder what their rationale is for canceling ST: Prodigy.

BL.

I don't think Paramount was ever excited about Prodigy. It never got as much exposure as their other "adult" shows did.

While waiting for the SNW musical, I am thinking M'Benga is an interesting character, after that episode 8.

On the surface, he appears to be calm. But underneath, daaamn. He wipes out that one guy's transport pattern, with little hesitation. OK, lose one life to save many others. Then he takes that drug to kill the Klingon commnaders in the battle...well...OK its war. Taking them out would help end it sooner.

But then on the Enterprise, it appears he killed that Klingon ambassador (and Chapel covers it up). I know, the PSTD and all that, but wow, that's Sisko tricks the Romulans into the war dark.

In the original series, McCoy was CMO. But M'Benga was on the ship, at least for that mission. I would love to see the future back story on that. Was he demoted? There, just for that mission? When SNW ends, I think they should end it with Kirk taking command, with McCoy and Scotty with him. And explain what the deal was with M'Benga.

Is it just me or is M'Benga's speech difficult to understand? When I watched him in the Ready Room interviews, I was able understand the actor's speech just fine. But in the show, the doctor sounds muffled and I often have to hit rewind or turn on the captions.

same here, his last sentence in episode 8 I rewound 3 times and still couldn't understand

Me too, though I often struggle understanding strong accents. Anything other than mainstream American or mainstream British basically.

At any rate, last SNW of the season this week, and then four whole weeks to wait without Trek until Lower Decks Season 4.

But since this is a verrry slow morning... I think I have developed a real hatred of random musical episodes.
Kudos to the cast (esp. the ones that weren't professional singers) for taking the risk, though, but...

Trouble is... the SNW musical left me humming the tunes... not from SNW but from the Buffy musical which was clearly where they got the idea (I know Xena, Chicago Hope and others did it first, but Buffy wrote the book on it). They even took the same basic dramatic idea from Buffy - people couldn't control what they were singing about and blurted out all of their deep, dark secrets (because that's how musicals work) - and the "bunnies" reference was an obvious acknowledgement.

Obviously all Star Trek fans have an unconditional love for Buffy so that's going to please everybody, right? /s

Thing is, though, Buffy was (a) a fantasy with monsters and magic, (b) basically a comedy-drama (with occasional attacks of very dark, serious stuff) and (c) a parody - and the musical ep. was definitely a parody of movie musicals. I mean... the population of Sunnydale had already been transformed into their halloween costumes, turned into insane witch hunters and rendered unable to speak, so suddenly being compelled to sing, well, it must be Tuesday. Hospital shows pulled off musical episodes by having them hallucinated by ill people. Star Trek may have its whimsical and comedic moments (like any drama) but any magic is supposed to be strictly Clarke's Law stuff. I think the idea would have worked better as a "Lower Decks" episode since that's more of a comedy-drama-parody show.

Also, they forgot this whole thing in an early episode of SNW about an ancient race that communicated through music which could have been a much better excuse to have Uhura and co show off their voices.

Plus, the songs in Buffy were more varied, "interesting" and "ambitious" than SNW - Buffy may have had some wobbly performances but SNW had that sort of slick-but-bland 21st century talent show feel. Someone should have given then something to sing about...

However, the choral version of the theme song should be paired up with the animated titles from Those Old Scientists and preserved for posterity.

This musical episode did nothing for me. The music itself was somewhat hack filler and at times, derivative. I think you take on Buffy was spot on. If they take the time to make things musical for a reason, then maybe the writers ought to know the difference between music and lyrics. Somehow it also made people 'lyrical' and of course, there had to be instrumental behind their singing. As some may not like my take, give it some thought how much more frustrating it would be for them as we see the used normal sentences put to some melodic structure and no instruments behind the voices. Far more impact and not some second rate off off off off off Broadway wannabe musical production. If I want something entertaining, Trekkish and yes still derivative, I'll take the episode to follow with the Gorn.

It all reminded me of an extended version of the opening scene in this Voyager episode:

Whilst I enjoyed it very much, I can see how having two ‘silly’ episodes (along with the Lower Decks crossover) in a 10 episode season may be a bit much.

You can’t deny that Strange New Worlds has real confidence that Disco and Picard never had though. I feel like they deserve a little victory lap with the musical episode :)

Well alas, I say first I am glad you enjoyed that episode but for me, obviously a no go. Again, if they wanted people singing their lines, leave the orchestra out of it. Then we get to see how annoying it really would be for them.

Maybe the Gorn just really don’t like musicals.

To be honest I did chuckle and groan simultaneously when the Klingons inevitably joined in. I think I groaned mostly at my disappointment that they didn't burst into Death Metal.

I AM SO PISSED! If you’ve seen the final episode you will know why….
From what I gather, they ended with a cliff hanger - how is that unusual or piss-educing? I don't have paramount+ so I really can't judge. Strange New Words however is much better received then some of Paramount+ other Star Trek shows. If I were to subscribe, its because of this show

Because we will probably have to wait two years for part 2

Agreed. They're very much willing to take risks and I applaud them for that.

With only ten episodes a season, I do understand the frustration when those risks don't resonate with some viewers as they can seem like wasted opportunity. I have felt the same with episodes of "Picard" and "Discovery" (usually during the middle portion of the story arc). :)

Kirk steals the Enterprise. (8 minutes)

Kirk: "Doctor, you're suffering from a Vulcan mind meld."

McCoy: "That green blooded son-of-a-bitch"

😂😂

Actually, McCoy was incredibly racist towards Spock. That doesn't seem very "Starfleet." I can't imagine anyone in today's Pike crew talking to Spock like McCoy did.

Seeing how McCoy gave only Spock the racist treatment and none of the other Vulcans or aliens they encountered leads me to believe they're actually best of friends. That and they went camping in STV:The Final Frontier. The fact that Spock entrusted McCoy with his katra (living spirit) speaks volumes to the closeness of their relationship.

I have call my best buddy names that would earn me two black eyes, a broken nose from a stranger. We insult each other as a greeting. Of course, I'd bristle if someone refers to my buddy with the exact same words.

Well, to be fair, McCoy was the only one around when Spock transferred his katra. You may be right about the other stuff, but it just doesn't sound good.
