he also seems to have a hard-on for dodgy white-box machines, and refers to IBM, HP, etc (and bundles apple in with them) as "proprietary ***** that can't be upgraded without going through premium factory dealers".

im still not sure exactly what he was referring to..

Try upgrading the video chipset in the new iMac.. or three years from now, try to buy a 'standard' motherboard and fit it in the case.

That's generally what PC Geeks are referring to when they say 'proprietary'.. the absence of things like 'backplane' boards, special power supplies built just for that particular logic board.. stuff like that.

My G4 tower, built in 1999 isn't real 'forward expandable' without enlisting the help of a dremel tool.. whereas the ATX case I bought in 1999 would have little trouble accepting the latest ATX board and Dual Core Intel CPU.

eBay is loaded full of Macs with dead onboard video.. or strange little power supply boards that just died. Not like you can just walk into WalMart on Saturday evening and buy a cheap AGP video card or power supply to stuff in there to get you thru the weekend.

my friend got an ipod for her birthday a few weeks ago and absolutely loves it. we always get into long conversations about windows v.s. macs. In one of our conversations she asked the rhetorical question with all serious "Could you imagine if the same apple that made my ipod, made your sucky computer?" I just stared at her blankly for a few moments till my eyes rolled into the back of my head.

Audio Cassette Conversion to CD's

I am a Mac beginner and I would like to convert audio cassettes recorded on an inexpensive regular tape recorder which I assume is analog. I have down loaded software by
Audacity for Intel Mac Version 1.2.5-pre (stable): audacity-macosx-1.2.5-IntelPre1.dmg in hopes of simply using the Audacity Software along with my MacBookPro OS X Version 10.4.7, with Intel Core Duo Lap Top for the cassette conversions to CD's.
Upon inquiring of the technicians at Apple, I learned that I would need a converter for this operation since my computer is digital and the recorder is analog.
If I can not accomplish this by only using the Audacity software and my lap top, could someone please describe the least expensive procedure in accomplishing this task along with my lap top.
Also, please describe the steps required in successfully and completely downloading software. I receive the error message "where is audacity-1.2-help.h+b?" whenever I attempt to operate the different functions located in the Audacity software window.
Thanks:)

So make a thread about it...

Agreed with Bill Gates, you need to make another thread, but to give you an idea, just get a cable from your tape player to Phono 1/4" stereo and use GarageBand to capture to Digital.

Done.

the other day i was helping someone wirh theer new imac and they had a jumpdrive and wanted to eject it so i say just drag the icon into the trash, so they got amd and though itwould somehow combust it or soemthing so i had to explain to them that by dragging it into the 'trash" osx qwould allow it to eject. i hate but love people with these problems, fun to look back on.

thats the thing though. i have a dual 2ghz g5. that has always been the reference. "all-in-one" type machines never come into the conversation. no, i cant replace the motherboard with one thats "off the shelf". but why the hell would i want to. half the time his argument is about how anything with ATI is crap because xyz chipset with zyx driver and abc motherboard dont work together. i guess thats what happens when you have a frankenstein pc...

That's really being hypocritical there. He say's he's having problems with his PC's registry which, IMO, would be reason for PC's to "suck". Yet he say's Macs suck without giving any reason like you did. ;)

I think what he meant to say after you told him to get a Mac was: "Shut up, I know PC's suck!" ;)

Well, I was kind of provoking him too. I know the rest of my family isn't too keen on the Mac. So, I just poke fun at them whenever possible :) .

But moving a disk to the trash for ejecting it is really an unintuitive interface design. You usually don't throw things into the trash, which you want to keep. At least for OS X Apple changes the icon of the Trashcan when you move a disk on it, into an eject icon.

But moving a disk to trash for ejectiong it is basically as intuitive as having to press the start button to shut down windows.

Whatever the machine, I would say it's better to reboot every so often. A lot of processes may not have shut down properly, memory is still being used for these and you just find it feeling slower. A reboot will clean out the memory and start everything again from scratch, (only theory mind you). Logging out and in often has a similar effect.

Now I sit and wait for others to shoot down what I've just said. :)

I have always been advised that a reboot won't clear the memory cache. Can anybody clarify? Is there an element of truth?

My iBook clears the RAM on a reboot but there's really no need to do so, OSX will release memory as it needs it.

The 'pro' or 'high end' Macs are more expandable, for sure.. and 'off the shelf' RAM, hard drives, optical drives from Walmart to Staples will work in it.. making it about as 'open' as you can get with a Mac.

In fact, with some creative EPROM flashing, you can get a wide range of 'PC' video cards to work in that G5 tower, as well.

I had a 256MB nVidia AGP card bought from Walmart stuffed in my G4 tower running Quartz like a champ!

I can see the propriatary argument on the 'all in one' boxes like the iMac, eMac, and MacMini, but not the towers from the Beige G3 PCI box on up.

Altho, I would have liked to have seen Apple adopt the standard ATX power supply. (which they kind of did, briefly in the late G3/early G4 tower models).

I hate most of the stupid John Lewis Sales men that most likely all have PCs...hey ramble on about this and that which to anyone with any comon sence would see they are just trying to sell it because they get more commission if they sell a mac.

Wrong. John Lewis salesmen don't work on commission :p If you'd said PC World, then I wouldn't have disagreed

And at least one guy in Oxford St know what they're doing since they've had Mini's hooked up to 50" plasmas and had Boot Camp working within 3 days of it being released ;)

Was just reading some comments some guy said. It's the typical stuff, "Macs suck", "They suck you in with all the pretty colors". bla bla. Then this is where he lost all credibilty by going on to say you can run more OS's on a PC. Guess they never heard of Boot Camp  I mean technically (Intel) Macs can run more OSs than PCs, right (OS X, Windows, Linux)? It's amazing all the anger people have towards Macs, and a lot of them have no REAL GOOD reasons for disliking them. Sorry just had to get that out

I was using my MacBook Pro, and somebody comes up to me and says "Hey, did you know that Macs suck?" I just looked at him and said "Oh, really? Thanks for letting me know." I smirked, and went back to my work.

I could somewhat relate to PC users who would complain that "Macs suck" during the early OS 9 days. I always had problems using them and helping those that owned them use them as well. Once OS X came along, however, my loyalties changed.

I always hated OS 9.

A statement that struck me as particularly inept about Macs was the following:

"You can use FTP on a Mac?"

I think a really over-exaggerated response would have been great too.

"They do!? Why didn't someone tell me?! I didn't realize you had all the answers! Please, show me the path to computer nirvana!"

This would be accompanied by grabbing him by his shirt collar and screaming this into his face of course. :D

About 2 weeks ago at university, there was a new student who enrolled on our course, he brought in a 15" PB into a lecture and as you do I told him it was a lovely machine.

Anyway, a few days later we met again and we were talking about Apple and PowerBooks. As the conversation is maturing, some guy joined in and mentioned the whole one button mouse issue... I had a mental image of myself smacking my head with the palm of my hand. Of course I corrected him politely but if I didn't experience it myself I wouldn't believe that, that kind of thinking is still running rampant.

Some downright idiocity from a windows user.
Me: So then you think linux is the best?
them: no
them: Linux aint commercial
them: but it sucks
them: its basicly windows
them: but less than windows

another one
them: computer making companies make their computers malfunction.
me: I still have my Apple ][e from the 80s and it still works as if it were brand new

and some more stupidity
me: what OS doesn't have a flaw?
them: custom made ones
me: what makes them flawless?
them: they don't have flaws?
me: are you saying custom made OSs do have flaws?
them: no
me: can't all OSs be hacked? Therefore they have flaws?
them: nope
them: not if they only open with a keypass
me: are you saying that they've created the perfect code?
them: pretty damn close
me: well don't you install programs on that OS? Therefore if the program has a flaw, then the OS gains that flaw. Therefore any OS that you can install a program is going to be flawed at some point.
them: just choose your programs carefully

yeah, they are crazy...

My friend is getting a new computer soon and I'm trying to convince him to get a Mac. But no, Dell PC's are cheaper!

me: "But still, Mac's are better quality and run Mac OS X"
him: "But you can run Mac OS X on a Dell too."
me: "No, they don't... Where'd you hear that?"
him: "I dunno I just know you can."
