Suddenly it's 1984 - Nvidia 4K 60 Hz support is there, Apple turned it off

Okay good news!

My GTX 680 EFI flashed card is working with the MST hack in 10.10.2 4k@60hz but only with the OS X default Driver, the nvidia web driver does not work.

I am actually okay with this solution, it's an EFI card and it works fine and using the OS X driver. I will just sell the 980, which kind of sucks that Im downgrading, but I can upgrade lateer, if it gets sorted out.

What is the difference between the Web Driver and OS X Driver, am I okay to just use the os x driver, or will I be crippling the GPU? I am noticing that the 680 is actually smoother GUI wise with HiDPI scaling then the 980 was.

EDIT: Update, I uninstalled the web driver and it stopped working, so it seems the web driver needs to be installed, but set to the OS X driver...

Update 2, can't get it to work anymore at all after uninstalling the nvidia driver, even after I reinstalled and did the same things.

Sorry it broke again, what display are you using?

I'm not sure why we are having so much trouble now.
 
Asus PQ321Q with the GTX 680. It's working fine in SST 30hz, but MST does not anymore. I have been trying to no avail.

Are there any issues with a MacVidCards GTX 680 and the Dell P2715Q 4K display in a 2012 Mac Pro 5,1? Will it do 60Hz right off ... or does it need special drivers or hacks to get it optimized?

Dell P2715Q should work with no issues since it's running SST.

I have tried the LG 31MU97 and the samsung 32"4k with the 680 and had no issues getting 3840x2160 60hz working with plug and play all the way back on 10.8.5 through 10.10.

Muli Stream Transport is what requires this hack and giving all sorts of trouble at the moment.
 
Hey MacVidCards, would this hack work in 10.9.5? I just can't get myself to get rid of my Asus PQ321q so I might just downgrade to my GTX 680 and use this hack in 10.9.5 if it works.

The other alternative is using 10.10.1, but being stuck with 10.10.1 and the specific version of the web drivers that worked...

Sigh...

I thought the LG 31MU97 only runs at 50Hz refresh rates on OSX? At least that's what the Apple support page say.

I was able to run the 31MU97 at 4096x2160 60hz with the GTX 980, but only 50hz with the 680.

Both the 680 and 980 ran the 31MU97 at 60hz with 3840x2160, but you get black borders on the sides.

Also, if you plan to run the 31MU97 at 4096x2160 60Hz, you will need to buy a heavy gauge high quality display port cable($50-$70) because the one they provide flickers and blacks out from time to time cause it's pushing the data limit. It's kind of funny they give you a cable that wont run monitor at it's full spec...

Thanks! I have a Radeon 7950 - I wonder if it could do 4096x2160 60Hz on the LG 31MU97? My guess is probably no since I am still running OSX Mavericks...
 
I'm not sure of the 7950. The data sheet on some of them state they can support 4096x2160, so you will need to try I guess.

60hz @ 4096x2160 only worked in Yosemite because the 980 doesn't run in anything earlier so I couldn't tell you.

I ended up rolling back to 10.10 and using my Asus PQ321q 4k, I will just stay on that version or try 10.10.1 to see which one is more stable and performs better GPU/UI wise, and hopefully we can figure out a way to make the MST hack work in later os x versions and web drivers.
 
Good news and bad news.

Spent several hours last night with Asus 4K trying to figure out current state of support.

Miserable experience.

Finally realiEd that Apple has won. They drew a line that says "these computers support 4k" and left cMP on the outside. And they meant it.

In my recent attempts to get NVIDIA 4K 60hz working I updated my Asus from 1.00 firmware to 1.10. MISTAKE

IT DIDNT FIX NVIDIA support, but it did break AMD support. Now like so many others I get 2 side by side screens with a 7970 while used to get one nice 60hz 4k screen.

Still outputting same number of pixels, just chopped into 2 screens.

So I downgraded to 1.02 firmware...no fix . Think I need 1.00 firmware but nobody seems to have that. Tried finding it for Sharp version, no luck there either.

So gave up on AMD and tried NVIDIA again.

GOOD NEWS !!! Got GTX980 Mac Edition running 4K 60hz .cursor worked on both sides, all nice and fluid. I took some screenshots and started typing my post here about return of support.

Then it crashed, taking all my text with it.

Wouldn't reboot until back in SST mode. Put back in MST....and it crashed in 2 minutes.

After 3rd time I gave up. Spent $3,500 on a display that now sells for $1,300. All I have been able to do is document how effectively Apple has kept meaningful 4K MST from cMP.

Works great in Windows on cMP. Works great on nMP IN EITHER. But I finally realized we are no longer dealing with teething issues of new tech.

We are dealing with Big Brother giant tech company who doesn't want old tech eclipsing new tech. We still have better, more capable GPUs in cMP then any other Mac. Yet somehow the weak kneed GPU in a 2013 rMBP can run this display with ease while I have nothing but trouble.

And I feel that heavy breathing on my shoulder. NVIDIA left paths in the drivers to make this work, Apple having final say on OS has effectively blocked them from working reliably.

It's all artificial, all about Apple strategically positioning products. NOT about Apple trying to make their stuff work.

If anyone has eyes on firmware 1.00, please post or PM. Going to try with GTX680 again. May create a fresh Yosemite install and start fresh. Hopefully get better ending than yesterday.

May soon just sell the darn thing on concentrate on SST 4K and 5K support. Apple may have won this round.
 
I think nvidia kext is source on these problem rather than os x itself, because i begin have this problem by nvidia driver, not os x update. (latest nvidia driver on 10.10.1)
 
Good news

Hey, so I created fresh-as-a-daisy Yosemite install, ran the updates (including the beloved "Security Update") and put on the 343.02.02fo3 drivers.

Did the hack as shown in first post.

And it works !!!

Only real issue is that you have to switch to SST on reboot then back to MST. Must be SST at boot, then switch to MST after desktop lands.

Wouldn't be such a PITA but Asus/Sharp made switching 1 function require ten (10) button pushes.

Not exaggerating, 10.

If it was 1 or 2 buttons to push, no biggie.

Anyhow, been running nice and stable at 60Hz with up to date drivers.

I tried with Asus firmware 1.02 and 1.10 and both behaved the same.

Even went to sleep and woke back up, more than I can say for the 5K.

Anyone else with Asus/Sharp 321 twins, please give it a shot.

This on GTX980 Mac Edition.

Will try with standard Mac GTX680 and report if anything changes.
 
Can I attach my MacPro disk to my macbook pro through an external usb and update to 10.10.2, latest nvidia drivers? I don't want to swap out video cards it's a pain.

No. Target Disk Mode only works over Thunderbolt or FireWire. The Classic Mac Pro obviously does not have Thunderbolt but if you have either a MacBook Pro with built-in FireWire or an Apple Thunderbolt to FireWire adapter you could do it that way,

No I meant I was gonna physically remove my SSD from the Mac Pro, put it in a usb enclosure and hook it up to the macbook pro, boot off it and update, and then replug it back into the MacPro and boot.

If the version of OS X on the MacPro SSD is new enough to support your model of MacBook Pro then that should work. The very latest Retina MacBook Pro model with the new Force Track Pad would likely not be supported by even a standard 10.10.2 as installed on a Classic Mac Pro.
