I'm looking for a USB C adapter that has a USB C port and a USB2.0/3.0 port; ie so I can charge the laptop and iPhone at same time.

If that doesn't exist is there somewhere I can find an adapter that gives two USB C ports? Thanks!

Nothing non-Apple out yet that does this. There are several Kickstarter projects, and iAnker has several "coming soon." My current solution is the Apple Multiport Adapter, and a PlugBug (hat-tip to another thread for this).

Does anyone have any suggestion for a power bank able to charge both the Macbook as well as at least 2 other USB devices?

Ideally I´d like one able to charge my Macbook,iPhone,iPad and Apple watch simultaneously for road trips or when I go camping.

Anker´s "PowerCore+ 26800 USB-C" (http://www.ianker.com/pages/usbc/) seems to be just what I am looking for, though it´s been "Coming soon" ever since its announcement back in may.

What powerbanks do you guys use?

Hey folks,

Are there any USB-C docks available to purchase right now, which are proven to more than vaporware, other than Apple's?

I know there's plenty on Kickstarter, but after having lost more money that I care to admit on vaporware that never got produced, and since I am still waiting for projects that were supposed to deliver in 2012, I've really had enough of crowdfunding.

Nothing that I'm aware of. I think at least one of those docks should be nearing production, and I think OWC has something in the pipeline.

What are you looking for in connectivity?

Exactly right. I never had and never will participate in Kickstarter crowdfunding gamble. Give me a shipping product with some user reviews and I will gladly pay for one.

As things stand right now - Apple A/V Digital Adapter is the only UBS-C dock worth spending the money on. The rest is either limited-function UBS hubs (no charging, no video).. and a myriad of Kickstarter vaporware projects.

Yeah iAnker too, but none of them are shipping or even have an official release date yet.

Nothing too fancy really, I could do with a miniDP,VGA or HDMI out, 3 USB-A 3.1 ports, 2 or 3 USB-C ports, a 3.5" jack plus an integrated power supply so that it'd also power the Macbook

Couldn't agree with you more, don't get me started on this. I think crowdfunding is really becoming a problematic trend with the industry at large.

While it's brilliant in theory, 0 accountability, little to no transparency, and consumers perceiving it as a pre-order of sorts rather than what it really is, a gamble, makes it an horrible deal.

I would much rather have entrepreneurs/product makers taking VC, angel or even friends&family deals in exchange for equity to get started and then release when they are actually ready to ship, perhaps even at a much higher price to compensate for the diminished stake.

As it is now, 3/4 of Kickstarter/Indiegogo projects are vaporware at best, or a free Lamborghini for some industrious unscrupulous marketer at worst.

I am personally done with all crowdfunding as it stands now.

A better option, could be one such were interested people's funds are held in escrow, and are only released when the maker has an actual product shipping. This way you'd be able to test out the market's response and interest, without actually screwing people around.

/rant

That being said, I am really looking forward to some decent docks and high-powered USB-C power banks getting actually released.

Hi,

Can anyone confirm whether a HDMI to VGA adapter works with the Apple USB-C Digital Multiport Adapter? The one I recently purchased from Amazon is not working with my works VGA monitor, and I am trying to troubleshoot the problem.

Thanks in advance.

I purchased a Cable Matters adapter [1] and it works perfectly, although it requires to supply extra power to it through its micro-usb port. I tried using one that required no power but I could not get it to work.

I found this which looks interesting as it allows for 2 x USB 3.0 ports and a powered USB C port.... Anyone have any experience of it?

That has been on Amazon here for a while, but no legitimate reviews, and it might be the same brand as another hub that someone reported here as never actually receiving.

I want some better options for USB-C stuff, but at this point, the Apple stuff is working pretty well for me. I'm saving any additional purchases until some reputable stuff hits the market.

I like seeing everything here though!

Thanks, I want to be able to connect two USB 3.0 external hard drives on an occasional basis to move some large files and don't want to have to rely on the rMB battery to do it....

The Apple one will do this, if you plug a usb hub into its single port. To power two drives that hub may need its own power which is a bit of a pain, but if this is going to be set up in one location, you can leave it there and treat it kind of like a mini docking station. That's what I do at my desk. When you think of it as a docking station rather than a simple adapter, the price becomes a lot easier to swallow!

I just got that one recently (it just started shipping). It's OK. The USB-A ports work, but the charging port is a little shaky. It charges about 1/4 the rate of directly plugging the charging cable into the MacBook. By contrast, the Apple multiport adapters charge at about 1/2 the rate of a direct connection.

On the plus side, I was able to power a USB monitor through it (which the Apple multiport adapter will not do). A minus is that the charging connection is shaky. When I connected my backup drive to the USB-A port, it worked fine if I didn't have the charging port connected. If I did, it would occasionally interfere with the USB-A port. That would interrupt Carbon Copy Cloner, though it's fine for basic copy activities.

Thanks for your reply. I didn't realise the multiport adapter was slower charging.... I also hoped I could use the type C port on the multiport adapter to connect a second hard drive in addition to one connected to the USB port, unfortunately it would appear that the type C port is for power only... Can you give me an idea of the speed if I connected two external hard drives without power (I have some 400+ GB time machine backups I need to move to another drive)....

Can somebody just confirm for me that there is no way to watch Netflix or similar services through Apple's own AV multiport adaptor, via HDMI, due to it not having HDCP? Andcurrently there is no way around this problem? Amy idea why Apple would do this when other Apple HDMI adapters do work? Didn't want to start a whole new post sorry! Cheers

I currently have need of something fairly specific.

Today I purchased the Apple Digital AV Multiport Adapter with HDMI, with plans to charge the macbook, connect to my 2560x1440 display, and connect the USB to my monitor's USB hub, which should provide me with all the ports I need. This works well, however after speaking to Apple support, this particular adapter won't support my monitor's higher resolution, and only supports up to 1080p or 4K, which really sucks. I'm not sure whether to return this and wait for an adaptor that will support the resolution i'm after. Really lame limitation on Apple's part, especially considering they're charging £65 for it!

tl;dr I want an adaptor that has a USB 3.1, USB-C (for charging) and HDMI, with the HDMI supporting a 2560x1440 display at 60hz. An extra USB 3.1 port would be nice on it too, as my monitor only supports USB 2.0.

It would be nice also if the connector from the Macbook to the adapter is USB-C, so I can hide the adapter away under my desk, but that's just wishful thinking.

That seems very odd. I'm fairly sure people in the Macbook forum are running monitors with resolutions between 1080p and 4k. I would start a thread there for advice because I'd suspect something else is going on.

Check the specs of your monitor. Some only support 1080p over their HDMI connection. You may need a DVI to HDMI converter.

I never thought of that. The monitor I have is a dell U2711 monitor, I know it supports the higher resolutions through displayport, not sure about HDMI. You can't do HDMI to displayport using the apple adapter as it's not supported. I have tried it, and Applecare confirmed it with me.

Monitors, ports and display standards are a real pain at times.
