Yea Apple is doing things for their own benefit, they are a business. But I also think the approach works well, otherwise why would it be so popular? There has to be a reason why the iPad and iPad Pro have been popular devices over the years. I’m not saying that Microsoft’s approach is bad, I jus think that thr Surface isn’t a good tablet AND computer, I think it’s a good computer for everyday tasks, blogging and so on.

But it doesn’t really solve the problem for people like me who wanted it to replace both the iPad Pro and MacBook Pro, if it can’t replace both, I might as well of kept iPad and MacBook Pro in the first place. Microsoft need to do some work on making it both a great tablet AND computer in my opinion.

I think the iPad Pro will continue to develop, for example full Photoshop is coming to the iPad Pro later this year, if Apple can bring other Pro and full programmes like Final Cut Pro X and so on they will nail it big time.

Careful what you wish for, Apple already clearly has little to no priority for the Mac...

I am not sure what you mean by this. The Windows Store doesn't have any programs that you can use on the Mac or iPad. Or do you mean Windows versions of Mac Programs? Dunno.

The thing with the Mac App Store is that Apple has sucked everyone into thinking they need an App store because people have gotten so used to that format from the iPad/iPhone where you have literally no other choice but to download an App.

But most of the "Apps" in the MacOS App store are really just programs that can be downloaded directly from the program developers and in some cases that is the preferable way to get them. I find in some cases the App store versions are not updated as often or don't have the means to an upgrade pricing path from the devs like direct download does.

It is a part of Apples philosophy to make Mac more IOS like in look and feel. The problem that it creates is you start to think in terms of "all apps must come from the App store" and you don't take the time to look elsewhere for them.

Granted Pixelmator isn't available for Windows, but is it really that brilliant an app? It is arguably only the 3rd or 4th best app for photo editing in the App Store for iPad or Mac. Of course, it is a matter of personal opinion which is why I state arguably, but Affinity is much better and is cross-platform. There are versions for Mac/PC/iPad.

I don't want to put words into Steve's mouth, but I believe the point he was making is that there is really no need for an App store except for a platform that is limited to the point where an App is your only alternative.

Cyberlink Photo Director is another good program. Where is the App for that? What about an App for Capture One Pro?

Aside from Photography, what about Quicken? Mint is not an alternative. I use SFREF, not app for it. My wife uses Dentrix, no app for it.

I am not sure what you are calling "stuttering" so that is hard to troubleshoot over a verbal description, but high-resolution displays such as the Surface, MacBook Pro Retina, 4K displays from other manufacturers have relatively poor response times. So they can have the appearance of "stuttering" when scrolling, moving the pointer, etc.

The newer iPads have a high response time due to the ProMotion technology. But if you are sensitive to "stuttering" due to response time, you might want to consider looking at some of the 1080p 144Hz models as well and see if that doesn't resolve the issue.

Some comparative response times. Surface Pro 6 slightly better than 2018 MBP, but nowhere near the Asus Zepherus or Razer Blade 15

Response Time Grey 50% / Grey 80% = Razer Blade 15" 17.2, Asus Zepherus 6.6, 2018 MacBook Pro 43.2, Surface Pro 6 42

Thanks for the explanation of the stutter. That is probably what was happening. There is so much I do not know hardware-wise. That was helpful. I suppose that is not unlike the frame rate refresh conversations that I’ve stumbled across in monitor discussions. I am very sensitive to that, so it makes sense this is something else I need to take into consideration as far as gaming laptops. The HP 13 is not much bigger than the Surface Pro, but it’s more pricey so I’ll hold off and wait on more gaming laptops with the 17” monitors in 15” bodies.

I know the HP pen lags outside of software it was created to work with too, so I did not count that (watching Lisa Gade has taught me about about styluses and what works/what doesn’t).

I am not here to bash Windows or Surface/PC laptops etc., I respect not only what hardware is out there now and Microsoft and other OEM’s commitments to doing new and exciting things with laptops and the Surface Studio. And that promise of one OS working in desktop and tablet modes, is not quite there. I realize that 2-in-1s are not for me, and I have to ignore tablet mode.

I am disappointed that the software I would love to have is not available, Procreate is such a joy to use and it keeps getting better. I do not use much beyond art apps and notability. Time to start fiddling in Designer. I admit I am also disappointed that W10 was not as easy as my Acer led me to believe (when it was working anyway). But then I was only learning office and doing light online schoolwork with it.

i think it will also help Apple when building ARM based Mac's, with their own in house chipset. I think that will happen eventually and it will either be great or a mistake

When/if Apple does this, it will likely be the end of my Mac buying days. But for that matter the issues I have had with the 2018 MBP's has likely brought about the end of my Mac buying days, so it likely won't matter to me either way :)

if Apple can make the chips as fast as they do for the iPad Pro's (the latest iPad Pro rivals most computers and even the Macbook Pro's) then they will be onto a winner.

I think this is a bit of a deceptive benchmark. Apple has made a chip that can run IOS Apps on an IOS device really fast. We haven't seen any evidence yet as to how that will translate to MacOS. Time will tell with that.

That's only a guess on my part, i don't even know it there is any evidence of it happening. I think it will be interesting, whether i would buy one i'm not sure. Before the Surface i was thinking of getting the new MacBook Air to replace my Macbook Pro 2011 that died.

Apple need to watch what they are doing with quality control, let's hope this year will be better. I'm holding out to see what they do with the iMac since it never got an update last year and i'm long over due upgrading my late 2012 iMac.

Have you considered the new Mac Mini and the iPP for on the go? Personally I think W10 and it's hardware is now far better, equally it's most definitely back to school :p

Davis Bowie's Aladdin Sane just never gets old  itching to turn that dial right up :p topped by Diamond Dogs, now that's some album

I can only speak from my own experiences as far as the new Mac computers. I am on unit #5 with the 2018 MBP and every one of them has exhibited issues, including this latest one last night. I am really discouraged with the current direction of Apple as far as their computer lineup. I am thinking about selling this one, even at a big loss. I think the only Mac I would buy today with my history with the laptops in mind is the Mac Mini.

This has been a bit of a heartbreaking and eye-opening experience for someone who was a huge and unapologetic apple fanboy.

Hey, you beat me to it with the Mac Mini hahaha. You are also correct that David Bowie's Aladin Sane just never gets old, only better :)

Edit: I realize I posted the comment about the current 2018 MBP in the X1 Extreme forum telling Maflynn he made the right choice, but the latest one had the "e" key become unresponsive until I mashed it hard repeatedly and it eventually unstuck after several attempts. But I have no confidence the problem won't re-appear later.

Edit 2: My 2015 iMac has been mostly good, but every once in a while I find it powered off for no apparent reason. I then can't power it back on until I unplug the power cord from the back and wait a couple of seconds before plugging it back in. Then it will power on and work fine again for months until the next time it decides to power itself off. I can't figure out whats going on there because it is so random and infrequent.

Frankly Apple needs to stop watching and start doing, as they are fast becoming a joke in professional circles. I'm totally serious never seen so many drop the Mac since the botched 2016 MBP was released...

Professional's are critical for good reason, they rely on the hardware & OS for a living Apple is simply failing them for reasons unknown, honestly they are becoming a joke...

The 2016 Macbook Pro was a misstep just like the Mac Pro from 2013, Apple even admitted that a while back and said there will be a new Mac Pro in 2019. I'm hoping there will be a redesign of the Macbook Pro next year, hopefully Apple have learned and they will address the issues that people have.

Sad but true 5 of 5, worse your not in isolation, if any of my guy's performed like this I'd have a fit, and they be walking. FFS what's wrong with this company, so much BS these days  Tim & CO should be ashamed, however it's seemingly business as normal on planet Apple foisting garbage however well appointed onto the customer.

Problem with Apple is that it "sold out" thx to greedy old men with no spine...

Certainly, they seem to be focusing more on the consumer/prosumer market rather than the professional one. This seems evident in their form over function design philosophy, lack of reliability/durability, dropping many of their Pro Apps (RIP Appature), and the constant simplification/IOSification of the OS.

I realize that the audience is their target market, where the buyer spends a lot of time with iDevices, and like the one-stop shopping approach, the UX simplification, dark mode and stuff like that, but there isn't much "pro" left in the direction they have gone. I am surprised they don't make color coordinated computer sleeves and covers to match the watch bands.

I don't know man. I have had bad Apples (pun intended) in the past, but it has been isolated and generally, a swap or maybe 2 gets you a good unit that will last many years. But starting 2013 when I had to have my 13" in twice for screen replacements due to "stain-gate," things began to go downhill with their computers.

I had to give my 2016 MBP to my wife this year because her own 2013 15" just died and it wasn't worth trying to fix. It powers up and just shuts right off. No warranty left of course. I may send it to Rossman for a quote and if too high donate it for spare parts. Luckily that 2016 has actually been problem free, but she uses it almost exclusively with an external monitor and keyboard, so that probably helps.

I have had nothing but problems with the 2018's. When I returned #4 and tried a few PC's, I should have never decided to give it another try. Because (knock on wood) all the previous problems surfaced during the return period. Now I have this one at about 2 months and outside the return window and probably my only option will be to sell it on Swappa or something at a loss. Still time is money too and I can't be bothered with sending it in for weeks at a time for keyboard swaps, so if it acts up again, and I am 90% sure it eventually will, that will in likelihood end the Mac era for me.

I have little hope as the current management is all about the $$$$ not the customer or the product. Mac Pro will just be another weak joke, locked down & locked in. If Tim Cook could charge you for the air in the Apple Store he would, just wait until Ahrendts takes over it will be an even bigger farce...

What a sad state of affairs, when MS released W8 I thought Apple is bound to capitalise on this travesty with the Mac, sadly the Mac had just spiralled ever downwards. Right now I fully expect the 2020 MBP to be an even bigger garbage pile; less features, more dependency on Apple, higher margins as fewer are buying.

What a disappointment Apple has become, makes my ****ing blood boil :mad::mad:

The 10.5 iPad Pro will definitely serve as my on-the-go device, and yes, I’ve been thinking about desktop Macs again. It’s a bit too much for me to get into Windows now, which annoys me given how much :apple: have pissed me off in the last two years. And yet, my nearly dying last summer made me realize there are certain things I can devote myself to learning and others might be a bit too much.

I appreciate everyone’s patience, tips and tech talk etc.

I partly agree with you, I say partly because I do think in some areas Apple are making great products. I love my Apple Watch Series 4, I even loved my original Apple Watch when I first got it back in 2015. The iPhone X I also love, by far the best iPhone I have ever owned.

That being said, they really do need to focus on the Mac, I love the Mac, the iMac is my favourite desktop and MacOS is my favourite OS, even with owning a Surface Pro Windows machine. For me personally Mojave was a nice upgrade last year and so far my favourite version of MacOS.

I think the 2020 redesign (if there is one) needs to be great and work for it's pro users. The upcoming Mac Pro will be interesting, Apple have shown that they can still build Pro machines, the iMac Pro is an example of that.

I guess time will tell ;)

Once someone stated it wasn't in Apple's DNA to produce garbage, sadly this is being proved wrong. That was true until Apple sold out to the market...

They should be ashamed, Apple has simply turned into exactly what it stood against. The 1984 Super Bowl advertisement should be rerun, only swap IBM for modern Apple, what a disgrace...

If the 2016 MacBook Pro was a misstep, I am not even sure what the expletive for the 2018 MacBook Pro would be. At least my (former) 2016 has been problem free to date. At this point, I am half tempted to see if my wife will trade me the 2016 I gave her for my 2018 since she uses an external keyboard anyway.

I partly agree with you, I say partly because I do think in some areas Apple are making great products. I love my Apple Watch Series 4, I even loved my original Apple Watch when I first got it back in 2015. The iPhone X I also love, by far the best iPhone I have ever owned.

I love my Apple Watch Series 4 as well, just as I loved the S2 and S0 I had before that. They are all still working great.

I also love the iPods I have had and I keep praying my 160GB iPod Classic keeps going. So far knock on wood, it has :)

iPhone X I also love mostly. I say mostly because I thought I wanted a smaller phone, but often find I miss the larger size of my 6S+.

But that is where we part ways. Mojave imho was a step backwards.

I would rather have a Surface Studio than an iMac, but I plan to sell my 2015 iMac and build myself a tower instead. My iMac is too limited and I need to have a 3 monitor setup.

Used to love the MacBook Pro, but sorry I stuck with the 2018's so long and at this point definitely have buyers remorse. Another unit, another problem. I am also betting resale will begin to tank.

Not sure Apple will ever nail the iPad until they add trackpad/mouse support.

I do what needs to be done, with the best tool for the job. Apple has let many others & myself down tremendously so, subsequently Apple deserves all it gets. Selling "Pro" hardware, when there are next to no "Pros" left on the platform, good luck with that one. Recipe for ridicule if you ask me...

Bring on the TouchBar DJ's, always good to see Tim & Co embarrassed and cook up more pathetic excuses why Apple cant  Once the Mac stood by itself, it didn't need excuses as it was a product leader...

Me too, but it is hard to let go sometimes and I think that the idea of "wow, am I really going to get rid of *all* my Macs and not have any MacOS devices?" is what pulled me back into trying another 2018 MBP.

In that regard, perhaps it is for the best I am having troubles with this one as well, it makes the idea of eventually totally switching over easier to accept.

Next up, parting ways with the iMac. Need to make me a bootable DBAN disc and clean it out.

First time ever in the field (engineering projects) both systems are W10 and that firmly lies with Apple for designing & producing garbage...Pro my arse...

I was a little slower in coming around, dismissing the 2013 13” display issues as a fluke, rather than a trend.

I think the biggest issue has been the keyboard on the MacBook Pro 2016 and onwards, I like the actual keys, they are more accurate to type on and the feel is great. It’s the reliability that seems to be the issue. I think that will be one of the things they redesign for the 2020 MacBook Pro’s.

I won’t count Apple our of anything, that’s been done in the past and Apple have come back and proven themselves. I think they will have learned a lesson from it, the new Mac Pro will be an interesting one, it’s not targeted to people like my but it will be interesting to see where Apple go with it. I just hope at the same time we get an iMac update as well.

And if there's something that's not garbage, it's grossly overpriced. I would need to upgrade my 2011 Mac mini as it's not getting Mojave anymore so its security is also possibly compromised as Apple has shown that they'll patch only the latest OS for sure. The two previous ones also typically get patched, but only if the fix doesn't involve too much effort (see the Rootpipe case). Anyway, while the new Mac mini seems nice -- unlike the 2014 downgrade -- but I'm not quite fond of paying twice as much compared to my mid 2011 i5 setup. In addition, if I try to even match the amount of internal storage I have on my 2011 with two drives, the cost of the 2018 model with its reduced upgradeability skyrockets and in return I get all the Bridge OS T2 issues to deal with. So I think you'll understand why I'm not exactly rushing to upgrade.

Even as a hobbyist, for the first time in 20 years, there are no Macs I am willing to buy. That annoys me. As I go back and forth with this, it’s clear I am taking a huge risk with both platforms.

I’ll just have to jump in and deal with whatever comes.

I verbalize a lot, but then I just do it.
