Surface Studio is nothing more than a pimped Mac Mini with an attached tilting monitor. (And a touch enabled OS)

None of the large brains at Apple could come up with a similar idea? Especially since they are soft-killing the Mini ATM any how

Fire them all.

And the MBP update is weak and gimped machine

And an Apple is just another PC in the PC market just like Microsoft.
And HP had an all in one before Microsoft made one for Windows.
It's a terrible world we live in :p
(hug) it's all going to be ok. Just buy what you want and need, for the budget you have ~ and only for the stuff that works for you.

What? Rational attitude on Macrumors forums? Did I wake up in an alternative reality?

A sane lion to an insane society must appear insane.

They keep saying now how they don't think macOS should be fully touch-enabled. So I can't see the iMac becoming anything like the Surface Studio.

I think the Studio looks awesome, it's getting great initial reviews too. Basically a niche product but it's lovely that Microsoft are openly courting that market.

Well, Microsoft did go through the growing pains of Windows RT/8 to get to where they are now ...so it isn't just them making the OS touch friendly, it's them spending years and years working out the kinks.

Now it seems to be paying off, as the reviews for the Studio seem to be excellent.

No thunderbolt 3?
No awesome usb-c speeds?
A mac mini with an external monitor you can't disconnect?
No SSD drives?
No Mac OS?

But yeah, the pros are pretty awesome, 28" monitor, ram up to 32gb, nVidia GPU.

Yeah, we already know.

You'd be paying twice as much for one if it had an Apple logo stamped on, though.

Of course the Mac would have TB3, etc, etc, I was just highlighting the design and form factor being more Apple than Apple and certainly not what you'd expect from MS.
A friend of mine has had one of these for a few months on test for animation purposes but he hasn't been able to say anything up until now due to NDA but he thinks they are the future.

Not making excuses but I heard/read somewhere this was in development for years and so USB-C and TB3 weren't something close enough for release to implement. Its a bummer, because you're paying over 3k for a machine you want the latest technology. Can you imagine if Apple did this, people would be up in arms.

A mac mini with an external monitor you can't disconnect?
Since when does a Mac Mini has a dGPU, quad core processor and can drive a 5k P3 display? I suppose you can make the same exact argument for the iMac, i.e., its a mac mini with an external monitor you can't disconnect

No SSD drives?
Agreed, this one is a head scratcher.

Honestly looks beautiful. Not sure if I'd trade OS X for the ability to draw or adjust the screen landscape simply because I can't think of when I'd use it as that at present.

However I'm sure someone smarter could make some phenomenally innovative programs which would utilise it *cough apple*.

Not gonna lie, tempted to buy it but think gen 2 might be a better bet. Needs an SSD.
also aspect ratio for someone like me...

[doublepost=1478396989][/doublepost]also i don't think apple will be competing with this product.

Apple will release a thinner iMac, with less ports and a better screen. Probably bit more adjustable and they'll upgrade the base model to a fusion drive and update the processors etc.

I can't envisage much more innovation from them.

I think as a tech fan, apple are just so far behind now and some of the newer products seem to be rectifying issues with build quality which makes me edge and stay with apple.

I think MS are going to capture the professional market with beautiful build quality and innovation. Casual market will see it, realise superior product and bite. Its how they got me initially with the MBP.

Not really no.
The iMac is like 1000$ cheaper for similar specs, except:
- The GPU. The nVidia ones a better at gaming, but the difference is much less pronounced for compute, considering this is not a gaming machine. And at least the iMac came with current-gen GPUs when it was released.
- The display. Higher res for the iMac, but tilt & touch a big feature I agree. Is it worth >1000$?
- IO. No thunderbolt for the Surface. WTH?
- Hard drive. I suspect the hybrid drive isn't nearly as good as the fusion drive, if it's just one of the hybrid SSD+HDD commercial drives like those from seagate. Is the SSD connected via PCIe? Does the system move frequently accessed files to the SSD?
So no, there is absolutely nothing to suggest that a Mac version of the surface would be twice more expensive.

Also, the BTO options are a joke. Want a bigger HD? You can't have it if you don't take the better GPU/CPU at the same time. That could cost your >1000$. And no SSD option. Is this 2010? o_O

...and a Mac is nothing more one of the many PCs out there.

Uh no. A Mac fits into an overall ecosystem that 'just works'. Also now you can do Apple Pay on Macs and Touch ID on the new Macbook Pro. It won't be long until Touch ID is available for all Macs. Tell me which PC has the ability to do payments?

Also Continuity/Handoff is an Apple exclusive!

Wow!!!!

Did you all see how over priced this thing, Studio, is compared to Apple products!

I can get so much more in an OSX based device.

;)
